Arnau Vilamitjana's 84th-Minute Header Sends Ventura County FC Past Timbers2 1-0 and Into First Western Conference Final

Substitute Arnau Vilamitjana headed in a Jose Magana Jr. cross four minutes after coming on, and No. 3 seed Ventura County FC ended Portland Timbers2's record-setting season with a 1-0 win at Providence Park.

Four minutes. That is how long Arnau Vilamitjana had been on the field when he ended the best season Portland Timbers2 have ever had.

The Ventura County FC substitute came on in the 80th minute, drifted to the back post in the 84th and headed a Jose Magana Jr. cross into the left side of the goal. That was the whole scoresheet. No. 3 seed Ventura County beat No. 2 seed Timbers2 1-0 on Sunday night, Oct. 25, at Providence Park in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference Semifinals, and booked the club's first-ever trip to a Western Conference Final.

Three draws, and then a fourth meeting

If anybody expected this one to be decided by a single moment, it was because these two clubs had spent all year refusing to separate. They played three times in the 2026 regular season and drew all three, according to Timbers2: a 0-0 in Portland on March 23, a wild 3-3 at Providence Park on May 10 in which T2 came back from 3-1 down with about half an hour left, and another draw in Thousand Oaks on Aug. 23, when Daniel Cervantes scored twice from the penalty spot.

So this was not a mismatch. It was a rematch with no tiebreaker left, played in front of 2,252 people who got in for free, since the club made tickets to the semifinal free and general admission.

Portland had more of the looks

On the numbers, Timbers2 did plenty to win it. Portland outshot Ventura County 13-9, put five shots on target to Ventura's three and won seven corners to three, per the T2 box score. Forward Max Kissel accounted for three of those five shots on goal, and Griffith led the team with four attempts.

None of it beat Ventura goalkeeper and captain Conlon, who finished with four saves. At the other end, Ventura's most dangerous player was Placias, who took three shots and put two on target. Portland goalkeeper Sam Joseph, the league's Goalkeeper of the Year according to the club, made two saves.

The game had an edge, too. Each side was whistled for 14 fouls, and Portland defender Bamford picked up the night's only caution early in the first half. It was 0-0 at the break, which by this point in the series felt less like a scoreline and more like a tradition.

The double change that decided a season

Ventura County's bench made its move in the 80th minute, sending on Vilamitjana for Arnold and Djieze for Garcia. It is the kind of substitution that usually gets one line in a match report. This one got the whole report.

Four minutes later, Magana Jr., listed as a defender in Ventura's lineup, swung a cross toward the far post. Vilamitjana met it with his head and steered it into the left side of the net. For a Portland team that had set a league record for clean sheets in a season, it was a brutal way to concede: one ball, one header, one moment of lost contact at the back post.

Portland coach Jack Cassidy answered in the 88th minute, sending on Cervantes, the club's leading scorer with 11 goals, for Nuñez and Barjolo for VanVoorhis. Ventura made one more change of its own in the 89th. There was no comeback. The goal stood up, and the season that had been building since June ended in Portland's own building.

Stats that tell the story

Shots: Portland 13, Ventura County 9. Shots on goal: Portland 5, Ventura County 3. Corners: Portland 7, Ventura County 3. Saves: Conlon 4, Joseph 2. Offsides: two apiece. In a game this tight, the gap between those totals and the final score comes down to one finish, and Ventura County had the only one.

A record season that deserved a longer run

It is worth being clear about what Timbers2 did in 2026, because the loss does not erase it. In Cassidy's first season in charge, T2 went 14-4-10 and finished with 57 points, the most in the club's MLS NEXT Pro era and 19 more than its previous best. The club won the Pacific Division, led the league with nine road wins, and set an MLS NEXT Pro single-season record with 14 regular-season shutouts, according to Timbers2.

Joseph finished with 12 clean sheets, the second-most in league history per the club, and Lucas Fernandez-Kim led the team with five assists. Portland closed the regular season on a 12-match unbeaten run (6-0-6), the longest active streak in the league, then made its first-ever MLS NEXT Pro playoff appearance count by beating St. Louis CITY2 2-0 in the quarterfinals on Oct. 16. Kissel and Noah Santos scored that night in front of 7,882 at Providence Park.

That is the frustrating part. A team built on not conceding lost a playoff game by conceding once. Development leagues are supposed to be about the long view, and the long view on this group is excellent. The short view, on Sunday night, was a late header and a quiet walk off the field.

Ventura County's first conference final

For Ventura County, this is new territory. MLS NEXT Pro billed the result as the club's first-ever trip to the Western Conference Final, and it got there the hard way: on the road, against the higher seed, against a defense that set a league shutout record, with a substitute who had been on the field for four minutes.

The MLS NEXT Pro playoffs run on four straight weekends and wrap up with MLS NEXT Pro Cup the weekend of Nov. 6, according to Timbers2. Ventura County is still in the bracket. Portland's offseason starts now, with a record book that looks a lot better than it did a year ago.

Three draws in the regular season did not settle anything between these two. One header did. Vilamitjana will not be in many highlight packages outside of Ventura County this week, but in four minutes he did what three regular-season meetings could not: separate these two teams.
