Portland Pilots Put Historic Stamp on WCC Start With 5-0 Rout of Saint Mary's
Five different scorers and nine assists powered Portland to a 5-0 WCC win over Saint Mary's on Sept. 30, the Pilots' best conference-start goal differential since 1991.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Some conference openers are about surviving. This one was about announcing. Portland's men's soccer team turned Merlo Field into a scoring clinic Wednesday night, burying Saint Mary's 5-0 and putting a historic stamp on the first two weeks of West Coast Conference play.
Five different Pilots found the net. Diego Rosas dealt two assists and climbed into third place on Portland's all-time helpers list. Miguel-Angel Hernandez posted his fifth shutout of the season. And when the final whistle hit, Portland sat 4-3-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the WCC — the program's first 2-0 conference start since 2022, its most goals through two conference games since 2014, and its best goal differential through that stretch (+9) since 1991.
Saint Mary's fell to 2-5-4 and 0-1-1 in league play, ending a five-match unbeaten run in the loudest way possible on the opening night of a Pacific Northwest road trip. Attendance was 1,451. The evening lasted long enough for Portland to empty the highlight reel.

Aror Sets the Tone Early
Portland did not wait to feel out the Gaels. In the fifth minute, Rosas whipped a corner into the box and Efetobo Aror rose to head home his second goal of the season — and the fourth of his career. It was the first time Aror has scored multiple goals in a single season. More importantly for the night, it was the kind of set-piece strike that settles a home crowd and freezes a visiting midfield: early, simple, merciless.
From there, the first half became a study in control. Portland outshot Saint Mary's 9-3 before the break and forced Gaels goalkeeper Tommy Davis into early work. The Gaels settled enough to reach halftime down only 1-0, which on paper looked like a fight still to be had. On the field, it felt like a dam waiting to break. Saint Mary's had flashes on the counter and from dead balls, but Merlo Field's rhythm belonged to the Pilots.
Davis would finish with a career-high five saves on 23 shots faced. That line is both a credit to the sophomore and an indictment of how little oxygen Saint Mary's got in Portland's half for long stretches. When your goalkeeper is Player of the Match material on a 5-0 night, the rest of the night has already told on you.

The Flood After Halftime
The second half lasted about 10 minutes before the game stopped being competitive. In the 53rd minute, Rosas and Joe Highfield played a short combination, Rosas slipped a low ball to Christian Mendoza, and Mendoza finished for his first goal of the season and the second of his career. He became the ninth Pilot to score this year. 2-0.
Three minutes later it was 3-0. Michael Dunne found Isaac Emojong, Emojong found Highfield bursting through the middle, and after a slight deflection Highfield corralled it and buried his fourth goal of the year. Highfield also added an assist on the night, continuing a season in which he leads the Pilots in both goals and helpers. For his career he now sits on 22 goals and 13 assists — 57 points in a Portland shirt — the kind of production that turns a midfielder/forward hybrid into the gravitational center of a WCC title push.
Saint Mary's still manufactured half-chances. Rafael Suarez forced a near-post save in the 59th minute. Carl Emil Lauridsen curled one just wide after a punched free-kick scramble in the 65th. Those are the moments road teams hang a belief on. Portland treated them like interruptions between their own scoring spells.

Late Goals, Deeper Bench, Same Result
The final 10 minutes belonged to the next wave. Dominic Edwards finished in the 81st minute after Dominic Berrios and Justin Nelson combined to find him cutting into the box — Edwards's second goal of the year. Five minutes later Alex Waggoner finished for his first goal of the season, Berrios again assisting. Five scorers. Nine assists as a team — Portland's most in a match this season. Rosas's two helpers pushed him to 31 for his career, third all-time at Portland and most among any active Division I player.

What It Means
This was the Pilots' fourth straight shutout victory and fifth shutout overall this season. Hernandez's four saves and fifth blank leave him with 18 career shutouts, seventh in program history. For Saint Mary's, a five-match unbeaten streak ending 5-0 on the road is a loud reset before Seattle U. Portland has scored nine goals in two WCC matches with a plus-nine differential — the best conference-start margin since 1991.
The Close
Merlo Field on a September weeknight can feel like a secret. On Wednesday it felt like a declaration. Aror early, Mendoza and Highfield in a three-minute blitz, Edwards and Waggoner late, Rosas conducting from the corner flag. Saint Mary's came in unbeaten in five. Portland sent them out with a 5-0 receipt and a place in the program's conference-start history. Next up: Michigan on the road Oct. 4 in Ann Arbor.
