Keefer Brace and Man-Down Flood Lift Oklahoma Past North Texas 6-2
Kayla Keefer scored twice and Oklahoma poured in four second-half goals after an Ella Bushko red card as the Sooners beat North Texas 6-2 on Sept. 3.

DENTON, Texas -- For 45 minutes, North Texas looked like it belonged on the same field as an SEC visitor. The Mean Green outshot Oklahoma, traded blows, and walked into halftime tied 2-2. Then a second yellow on Ella Bushko flipped the night, and the Sooners scored four unanswered in the second half of a 6-2 win at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium on Sept. 3.
Oklahoma improved to 6-0-1. North Texas fell to 2-3-1. Kayla Keefer finished with two goals and an assist, extending a nation-leading goal total to 11. Paige Califf had a goal and an assist. The final was lopsided. The first half was not.

First-Half Classic, Then the Red
Sadie Sterbenz opened the scoring in the fourth minute, heading in a Paige Califf set piece for her first goal in her first start as a Sooner. North Texas answered in the 19th when Rydlii Rives ripped a left-footed strike from outside the box into the upper corner for her second of the season. In the 34th, Claire Niedermeier converted a penalty -- her fifth goal of the year and first career PK -- after a challenge overturned an offside disallowance into a goalkeeper-obstruction call. UNT led 2-1.
It lasted about 100 seconds. Keefer headed home a Claire Curran cross in the 35th, and the teams went to the break even. Mean Green coach John Hedlund called the first half a classic: balls won in the air, chances finished, a 2-2 tie against the wind. Then, in the closing moments of the half, Bushko received a second yellow after an Oklahoma player went down in front of her. North Texas played the rest of the night a player short.

The Flood
Keefer put Oklahoma ahead for good in the 58th, finishing a rebound after her first attempt hit the post. Kennedy Kaiser made it 4-2 in the 63rd off a Keefer feed. Califf converted a penalty in the 68th for her first Sooner goal. Isabella Martinez capped it in the 87th off a Brenna Hallam service that bounced off the keeper. Final: 6-2. Shots finished 16-13 Oklahoma. Shots on goal were 14-5.
Hedlund credited his side's first-half fight and disputed the red. Niedermeier pointed to the first-half execution and the difficulty of playing short against an SEC roster. Both notes fit the tape. The Mean Green did their part for 45 minutes. The man-down math did the rest.

What It Means
Oklahoma's depth showed -- 24 players used, Addison Tauscher making her debut in goal for 12 minutes, Sterbenz scoring in a first start. Keefer's third brace of the season keeps her atop the national chart. Califf's first goal as a Sooner adds another name to the scoring sheet. Matt Mott's club is 3-0 against UNT under his watch.
For North Texas, the film will split cleanly. First half: compete, finish, lead. Second half: survive with 10. Rives' missile and Niedermeier's PK are the keepers. The red card is the hinge. Non-conference nights against SEC visitors are supposed to teach lessons. This one taught two -- you can hang for a half, and a card can erase the rest.

The Close
Some blowouts are preordained. This one was earned in halves. North Texas matched Oklahoma until it could not. Bushko's second yellow changed the numbers. Keefer, Kaiser, Califf, and Martinez filled the second half. Sooners 6, Mean Green 2 -- and a first half worth remembering even after a final that was not.
The film will show Rives' upper-90 strike and Keefer's brace. That is how these nights work -- one set piece, one PK, one red card, and the narrative locks in before the Monday meeting starts. Fans leave loud or quiet. Coaches leave with clips. Players leave knowing September does not forgive unfinished chances.
OU wraps non-conference at BYU next. North Texas returns home Sept. 10 against Nelson. Both sides will carry different pieces of this tape. Only one will carry an unbeaten record that still has a 6-2 road win stamped on it.
Playing a man down against an SEC attack is a brutal ask. UNT made it through the first half of that ask without collapsing, then watched the second half turn into a scoring clinic. That sequence does not erase the first-half pride. It also does not soften the final.
Keefer's nation-leading total is the national note. Sterbenz's first start, first goal is the developmental one. Bushko's exit is the turning point North Texas will argue and Oklahoma will accept. All three can be true in the same recap.
