Corales Puntacana Championship Round 2: Joel Dahmen Sets the Record and Stretches the Lead

Thirty-six holes, 16 birdies, zero bogeys. Joel Dahmen is not just leading the Corales Puntacana Championship. He is making the rest of the field do math.

Dahmen followed Thursday's course-record 62 with a bogey-free 6-under 66 on Friday, getting to 16-under 128. That is a tournament record through 36 holes and the lowest two-round total of his PGA TOUR career, and it gives him a four-shot lead heading into the weekend in Punta Cana. Michael Thorbjornsen (63), Garrick Higgo (68) and Charley Hoffman (66) share second at 12 under. Chan Kim, Dylan Wu and Keith Mitchell are another shot back at 11 under.

Front-Nine Fireworks, Back-Nine Discipline

Dahmen did his damage early again. Five of his six birdies came on the front nine, and once the lead was built, the back nine became an exercise in not giving any of it back. He did not. Through two rounds he is the only player in the field without a bogey on his card.

The supporting numbers are tidy. Dahmen hit 24 of 28 fairways over the first two days and got up and down all nine times he missed a green, per The Spokesman-Review. When the misses are that rare and the recoveries are that reliable, a scorecard stays spotless.

Scoring got tougher overall on Friday, with the field average climbing from 69.6 on Thursday to 71.3, per The Spokesman-Review. Dahmen expected the later starters to feel it most. "The afternoon wave's definitely going to have it harder," he said, per Field Level Media.

He also says he was not watching the board. "I didn't see a scoreboard honestly until 18 green," Dahmen said, per Field Level Media.

He knew what he had once he looked. "I mean, 16's pretty good anywhere you're playing," he said.

Thorbjornsen's Lucky, Unlucky Eagle

The round of the day belonged to Thorbjornsen, a Stanford product who earned his card through the PGA TOUR University ranking. His bogey-free 63 matched his career best and vaulted him from 3 under into a tie for second.

The signature moment was a strange one. On the par-5 seventh, Thorbjornsen's tee shot ended up in an animal burrow, which meant a long wait for a ruling. Once he got relief, he hit an 8-iron from 180 yards and made the putt for eagle. He added a second eagle on the par-5 12th.

"They almost finished the hole by the time we got a ruling," Thorbjornsen said, per Field Level Media. "Honestly, like a decent break but unlucky at the same time."

Two eagles and no bogeys is about as complete as a round gets, and it puts a young player in position to make a real run at a first TOUR title.

Hoffman Holes Out, Higgo Hangs Around

Hoffman, one of the most experienced players in the field, posted a 66 that featured the Shot of the Day, a hole-out from a bunker. It was the kind of jolt that turns a solid round into a great one, and it pulled Hoffman into the tie for second.

Higgo's 68 was steadier and quieter. The South African lefty opened at 64, did not give much back on Friday, and stays right in the mix four shots off the lead. Mitchell, who also shot 64 on Thursday, cooled to a 69 and slipped to a share of fifth. Matt Wallace, the 2023 champion here, posted a 70 and sits in a tie for eighth at 10 under with Matt NeSmith and Will Chandler.

Kim (66) and Wu (67) were the other big movers, both climbing into the top five and both sitting five back.

Cut Line and Stakes

The cut fell at 3-under 141, and among those who made it on the number was Ben Polland, a PGA club professional who is set to defend his title at next week's PGA Professional Championship. Making a weekend at a TOUR event is a nice tune-up for that.

The prize for whoever is standing last on Sunday is significant. The winner here earns a two-year TOUR exemption, a spot in the PGA Championship and 300 FedExCup points. For Dahmen, it would be his second career win, both of them in Punta Cana. He only narrowly kept his full card last season, so job security is very much part of the conversation.

"Two great days, need two more of them," Dahmen said to Golf Channel, per The Spokesman-Review.

Four Shots, Thirty-Six Holes

A four-shot lead at the halfway point is a real cushion, but 36 holes is a long time on an exposed course, and the leaderboard behind Dahmen is full of players who have already proven they can go low here. Dahmen has the lead, the record and a clean card. Thorbjornsen has the hot hand. Higgo and Hoffman have patience. Round 3 decides who gets the best seat for Sunday.
