Fever vs. Mercury: Caitlin Clark Sets WNBA Record With Sixth Straight 20-and-5 Game as Indiana Rallies
Caitlin Clark scored 24 with nine assists for a WNBA-record sixth straight 20-point, five-assist game, and the Indiana Fever shook off a six-point first quarter to beat the Phoenix Mercury 86-77.

Six points. That's what the Indiana Fever had to show for the first 10 minutes on Monday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, a number you'd expect from a rec-league team whose point guard got stuck in traffic. Phoenix had just reeled off 19 straight, and the 15,198 in the building were entitled to ask about refunds.
Three quarters later, the Fever had an 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury. Caitlin Clark's final line read 24 points and nine assists, Kelsey Mitchell chipped in 22, and the WNBA record book had a new entry: Clark's sixth consecutive game with at least 20 points and five assists, the longest such run in league history.
From Zero to Thirty-Five
Indiana scored first, which turned out to be misleading. The Mercury answered that opening basket with a 19-0 run that lasted until 11.3 seconds were left in the quarter, and at 19-3 the Fever were looking at a 16-point hole. Three late points made it 19-6 at the horn. According to the AP, no Indiana quarter had been lower since 2018, and no first quarter since 2016.
The next 10 minutes felt like a different sport. Those three points were the start of an 11-0 run that carried into the second, closing the gap to 19-14 with 8:31 left in the quarter. Clark's 15 in the period matched the fourth-highest single-quarter total in franchise history, according to the team. Indiana hung 35 on the board, its second-highest quarter of the season according to the AP, and went into the locker room tied at 41.
Then came the third, and the game stopped being competitive. The Fever outscored Phoenix 30-11, closing it with a 9-0 run that pushed the margin to 21. It was 71-52 at the end of three, which is a brutal place to land for a team that had been up by 16 about two quarters earlier.
The fourth was mostly about tempers. Six technical fouls were called between the teams, four on Indiana and two on Phoenix, and Myisha Hines-Allen got tossed after picking up her second. The Mercury won the period 25-15 and kept scoring late, but the closest they got in the final five minutes was the final margin, thanks to a three-point play from Valeriane Ayayi with 2.6 seconds left.
Clark Made History, Mitchell Made Shots
Clark's line wasn't surgical, with 8-of-17 shooting and 3-of-10 from deep. It didn't need to be. She controlled the game once it turned, adding nine assists and three rebounds and taking six free throws. The record she now owns alone had been a five-game mark shared by four players, Clark herself among them, along with Kelsey Plum, Arike Ogunbowale and Cappie Pondexter.
Mitchell took 20 shots to get her 22, and nine of those points came during the third-quarter avalanche. Together, the two made 16 of Indiana's 27 field goals and scored 46 of its 86 points, which tells you how much of the offense ran through them. Aliyah Boston had a rough shooting night, just 2-of-9 for eight points, and made her impact on the glass with nine rebounds. Sophie Cunningham missed all five of her shots and still found a way to help with six boards, and Raven Johnson added five rebounds of her own in 18 minutes.
The best surprise was Monique Billings, whose 14-and-10 night was her first double-double of the year with Indiana. She went 4-of-4 from the floor, 6-of-9 at the line and grabbed six offensive boards, and the team noted she's only the fifth Fever player ever with a double-double on perfect shooting. Lexie Hull chipped in eight points in 17 minutes without missing a shot, going 2-of-2 from 3 and 2-of-2 at the line.
For Phoenix, Kahleah Copper scored 20 before finishing with six fouls, while Alyssa Thomas posted 19 points, nine assists and five rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting. No player in WNBA history has reached 500 assists with a franchise faster than Thomas, who beat Clark's pace by four games, and she climbed to 13th on the league's career steals list. Ayayi added nine points, seven of them at the foul line without a miss.
One Minute and 48 Seconds
If you need one stretch, take the one that straddled halftime. Phoenix had pushed back in front, 41-39, with 32.2 seconds left in the second, and all that Indiana comeback work was about to look like empty calories. Instead the Fever tied it before the break, came out of the locker room scorching and led 49-41 by the 8:44 mark of the third. That's 10 straight points across a minute and 48 seconds of game time. Phoenix never led again.
Stats That Matter
- 30-11: The third-quarter score, the whole game in a single line.
- 80-58: Indiana's edge over the final three quarters after trailing 19-6.
- 39-29: The Fever's rebounding margin, including 12 offensive boards, half of them from Billings.
- 5-of-25: Phoenix's 3-point shooting, a 20 percent night that made every run harder to sustain.
- 40-26: Phoenix's edge in the paint, which is how badly the 3-point shooting and the rebounding had to go for the Mercury to lose this by nine.
What It Means
Indiana moves to 10-7 and 7-3 at home, and it snaps a two-game skid after back-to-back losses to Atlanta. Phoenix falls to 5-13 and 3-7 on the road, unable to build on Saturday's 93-73 win over Seattle.
There's no time to cool off, which might be the best part. These same teams meet again in the same building on Wednesday, with Monday's six technicals still fresh in everyone's memory.
The Cold Open Ran Long
Plenty of good shows start with a cold open where everything goes wrong. Indiana's just lasted a full quarter. What followed was the show people actually tune in for, starring the only player in WNBA history with six straight games of 20 points and five assists. And the sequel airs in two days.
