Fever vs. Sky: Kelsey Mitchell Sets WNBA Single-Season Record With 16th Straight 20-Point Game in 90-86 Win
Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 for a WNBA single-season record 16th straight game of 20-plus points, and Caitlin Clark added 26 and 11 as Indiana beat Chicago 90-86.

Thirty-nine seconds left, a four-point lead, and 16,065 at the United Center suddenly believing. Kelsey Mitchell took her defender to the 21-foot mark, stepped back and reminded everyone why defenses have been losing this argument since June. Bucket. Ball game, more or less. History, too.
Mitchell finished with 27, and that made 16 straight games of 20-plus points, a WNBA single-season record according to the Associated Press. The Fever say she had been tied with A'ja Wilson at 15. Caitlin Clark piled on 26 points and 11 assists, and Indiana survived Chicago 90-86 on Saturday in a game with enough plot for a full season of television.
Eight Points, an Ejection and a Lot of Nerves
It started with a jolt, as Indiana scored the first eight. Then it got strange. DiJonai Carrington came off the bench and torched the Fever for eight points on 3-of-3 shooting in four minutes before she was ejected late in the first quarter for a Flagrant 2 on Sophie Cunningham. Chicago took a 23-22 lead into the second anyway.
The first big swing arrived with the score tied at 33. Mitchell scored eight in a row, Clark hit a 3, and a 13-0 run in under two and a half minutes put the Fever up 46-33. Clark had 12 in the quarter and Mitchell had 10, per the team, and it was 53-42 at the half.
Indiana stretched the margin as far as 17 in the third before Chicago scored nine straight to chip away at a 66-50 hole. It was 71-62 going to the fourth, and after a Fever basket the Sky rattled off eight unanswered in about a minute to make it 73-70. The Fever's answer was their best stretch of the period, an 8-0 run capped by Mitchell's 24-foot 3 off a Clark feed for an 85-72 lead with 4:50 left.
That should have been that. Instead Natasha Cloud attacked the rim for two quick layups, Rachel Banham hit a 3, and the two of them kept coming until it was 87-83 with 57.4 seconds to go. After Mitchell's dagger, Jacy Sheldon's 3 with 28.4 seconds left cut it to 89-86. Clark split a pair at the line with 17.9 seconds left, and Chicago did not score again.
Sixteen Straight and Absolutely No Fuss
Mitchell shot 11 of 22 with three 3s, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block, and 11 of her points came in the fourth, per the team. The sheets tell you how relentless this has been: her last game under 20 came on June 20 in Atlanta, the low point of the streak is an even 20, and the high point is 37. Next up is the overall mark, a 20-game run by Wilson that spanned two seasons, according to the AP.
Clark, meanwhile, was doing something the sport barely has a category for. She went 5 of 6 from 3 and 7 of 10 at the line, and even six turnovers could not spoil it. The AP says it was the eighth time in her career she has reached at least 25 points, 10 assists and five 3s in one game. Everyone else in league history has done it four times combined. Her 26 also moved her into the franchise's top 10 in career points at 1,589, past Shavonte Zellous, the team says.
Together they keep bending the record book in odd directions. The Fever credit them with a new league record for combined points over a 10-game span, 513, and say this was their eighth game with each scoring 25 or more, tied for the second-most by a duo.
Aliyah Boston added 13 points and 11 rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting and finished plus-23, a line nobody will remember and everybody should. Makayla Timpson scored 10 on 5-of-7 shooting with two blocks.
For Chicago, Cloud and Banham each scored 17, with Cloud shooting 6 of 9 and Banham doing her damage off the bench. Kamilla Cardoso had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Sheldon went 2 of 2 from deep for nine. Azura Stevens was the rough spot, shooting 3 of 13.
The 13-0 That Changed the Afternoon
The Sky had weathered a terrible start, lost their hottest scorer to an ejection and still gotten back to level midway through the second. Then Mitchell took the game over for a couple of minutes, and that was the whole difference. Those 13 points turned a coin flip into a lead Indiana never surrendered, though the Sky made it sweat. Chicago outscored the Fever 44-37 after halftime. It just never found a way to erase what happened in that one stretch.
Stats That Matter
- Second quarter: Indiana 31, Chicago 19.
- Paint points: Indiana 46, Chicago 38.
- Blocks: Indiana 7, Chicago 2.
- 3-pointers: Both teams went 9 of 22. Clark went 5 of 6, and the rest of her team went 4 of 16.
- Free throws: Chicago made 15 of 20, Indiana 11 of 16, and it still was not enough.
What the Fever Dodged
Indiana is 20-12 overall and 9-6 on the road, and the win ended a two-game skid. It is also 2-0 against the Sky this season after a 114-106 result on June 11.
The bigger victory might have come later. Clark picked up a technical during the game after making contact with a referee. She said the contact was inadvertent and no words were exchanged, and the WNBA rescinded the call. That matters more than most technicals: it would have been her eighth of the season, the AP notes, which would have triggered a one-game suspension. Instead she is available when the Fever host the New York Liberty on Tuesday.
Chicago dropped to 12-20 and 8-9 at home, and it has now alternated losses and wins over its last four games. The Sky visit Seattle on Monday.
The Longest Residency in Town
The overall record belongs to a star in Las Vegas, which feels right, because this is no longer a hot streak. It is a residency. Sixteen straight shows without a cancellation, same headliner, same set list, and the crowd in every new city knows exactly how the night ends and shows up anyway. Mitchell needs four more to match Wilson's run. Nobody in the building Saturday looked ready to bet against the booking getting extended.
