Of all the kickers in the NFL, the soccer kid raised on Premier League weekends got the London moment. With one second on the clock at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Cam Little of the Jacksonville Jaguars drilled a 57-yard field goal as time expired, and the Jaguars beat the Philadelphia Eagles 19-17 on Sunday in a finish that felt scripted by a streaming service with no budget for realism.

Philadelphia had gone ahead on a field goal with eight seconds left. Ameer Abdullah answered with a 53-yard kickoff return, and Little did the rest. Jacksonville improved to 4-1 with its third straight win. Philadelphia fell to 2-3 and has now lost three in a row.

Ejections, Goal-Line Walls and Too Many Flags

This one was chaos from the opening kickoff. Rookie Josh Cameron returned it 90 yards for an apparent Jaguars touchdown, but offsetting penalties wiped it out, and a midfield scrum got Jacksonville's Bryan Thomas Jr. and Philadelphia's Jeremiah Trotter Jr. ejected before anyone had run a play.

Once football broke out, Trevor Lawrence hit Parker Washington on a catch-and-run for a 51-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. The Eagles answered twice in the second quarter: Will Shipley punched in a 2-yard run to finish a 13-play drive, and Jalen Hurts found Darius Cooper deep for a 62-yard score on third-and-10 to make it 14-7.

Then came the first goal-line wall. Jacksonville marched 17 plays to the Philadelphia 1 and, with one second left in the half, handed it to Bhayshul Tuten on fourth-and-goal. Zack Baun knifed past a blocker and dropped Tuten for a loss, and Nick Sirianni leaped and pumped his fist on the sideline.

Cam Little's 34-yard field goal in the third quarter cut it to 14-10, and Quinyon Mitchell picked off Lawrence later in the period. Midway through the fourth, the Jaguars got to the 1 again on Brenton Strange's 27-yard catch and somehow backed out of it: a false start, two delay-of-game flags and an incompletion on fourth-and-goal from the 5. Jacksonville finished 0-for-3 in the red zone and committed 13 penalties for 100 yards.

They won anyway. Facing fourth-and-5 at the Philadelphia 27 with 3:20 left, Lawrence hit Washington deep for a 27-yard touchdown and a 16-14 lead. Little's extra point sailed wide left, which turned out to be the setup for the whole circus.

Washington, Lawrence and the Strangest Snap of the Day

Washington was the best player on the field: six catches, 124 yards and both Jacksonville touchdowns. Lawrence threw for 331 yards and two scores on 24-of-39 passing with an interception, and he hung in through two sacks by Jalen Carter, who forced two fumbles that the Jaguars recovered.

Philadelphia's offense was a ghost of itself. Playing without Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith, and with a patched-together offensive line, the Eagles rushed for 22 yards on 18 carries. Hurts went 21 of 40 for 220 yards, and the offense managed 232 yards overall.

The quiet hero was a defensive tackle. Long snapper Ross Matiscik left in the first quarter with a shoulder injury, so DaVon Hamilton handled the snaps the rest of the way, including the one on the game-winner. Hamilton also stuffed Shipley for no gain on a fourth-and-1 in the first quarter, three plays before Washington's first touchdown. Find a better trivia answer this season.

Eight Seconds, One Kickoff, Zero Margin

After Jake Elliott's 48-yard field goal gave Philadelphia a 17-16 lead with eight seconds left, the Eagles kicked off deep into the field of play. Ameer Abdullah fielded it at the 8, found a crease and ran 53 yards to the Philadelphia 39 before he went down with one second left. The 12th-year veteran said afterward that he was counting the clock in his head during the return, per the Jaguars' website.

Little calmly split the uprights, then went full Premier League: a sprint toward the far end zone with a pack of teammates hunting him down, finished with arms spread wide in a nod to Jude Bellingham, the England and Real Madrid star. Later, he took the podium wearing a Manchester United jersey.

"It was the coolest moment of my career," Little said.

Sirianni took the blame for not kicking the ball out of bounds.

"I didn't make the right decision, and I lost us that game," Sirianni said. "I cost us that game, and I put that fully on me."

The Box Score Fine Print

  • 22: Philadelphia's rushing yards, at 1.2 yards per carry.
  • 408 to 232: Jacksonville's edge in total yards.
  • 0-for-3: The Jaguars' red-zone line, the reason this game was ever close.
  • 13 for 100: Jacksonville's penalties and penalty yards.
  • 57: Little's walk-off distance, after he had already missed an extra point.

Jacksonville Rolls, Philadelphia Spirals

The Jaguars have now won three straight and sit atop the AFC South at 4-1. They are winning ugly, and everybody in the building knows it. The defense forced zero turnovers for the first time this season, per the team, and linebacker Foyesade Oluokun was refreshingly blunt about it.

"We won. I'm never mad at a win. But the way we won, we can win better," Oluokun said.

Head coach Liam Coen preferred to focus on the backbone.

"Nobody flinched, nobody blinked, nobody blamed," Coen said, adding: "It ain't pretty, but it's gritty."

The bad news: left tackle Anton Harrison was carted off in the third quarter with what appeared to be a right knee injury, per the AP. The good news: they stay in London and host Houston at Wembley Stadium next Sunday, so nobody needs to reset their body clock.

Philadelphia is 2-3 for the first time since 2021, according to the AP, and the offense has real problems that Barkley's return alone may not fix. The Eagles host Carolina next Sunday, and that final kickoff is going to follow Sirianni around all week.

The Game's Never Over

Lawrence has been in some wild ones, and he still put this at the top.

"One of the craziest games, maybe the craziest game I've ever been a part of," Lawrence said. "Just how cool is this sport? The game's never over."

Somewhere, Ted Lasso is nodding along: believe in the kicker.
