HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Eleven innings. A ghost runner. A walk-off. Carlos Virahonda dropped an RBI single into shallow right in the bottom of the 11th, Kayson Cunningham scored from second, and the Hillsboro Hops beat the Everett AquaSox 3-2 on July 31 at Hops Ballpark.

It was Hillsboro's second straight win over league-leading Everett and a memorable finish to game No. 100 of the Hops' season. Everett fell to 0-for-extra-innings frustration on the year. Alexis Liebano got the win. Casey Hintz took the loss after facing one batter.

Dix Ties, Virahonda Ends It

Everett scored both of its runs in the third. Ricardo Cova's single helped Carter Dorighi score on a throwing error. Korbyn Dickerson, Seattle's No. 12 prospect, lined an RBI single to right. The AquaSox led 2-0 and looked like the first-place club they are.

Hillsboro answered in the fourth. JD Dix, Arizona's No. 4 prospect, ripped a two-run single to left. Tie game. For the next six-plus innings, pitching ruled. Everett starter Colton Shaw worked 5.1 innings of four-hit ball with four strikeouts. Reid Easterly and Christian Little combined for scoreless relief that forced extras. Hillsboro's staff stacked strikeouts and slammed the door after the third.

In the 11th, after Hillsboro had held Everett scoreless in the 10th and 11th, Virahonda led off and delivered. Cunningham, the Diamondbacks' No. 2 prospect and the ghost runner, scored. Celebration at home plate. Series evened at two wins apiece in the six-game set.

Virahonda finished 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and the game-winning RBI. Dix had the two RBI. Everett stranded 13 and went 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Six hits for the AquaSox. Seven for the Hops. One swing decided it.

What It Means

Extra-inning baseball in High-A is a test of bullpen depth and late contact. Hillsboro passed. Everett's 0-9 mark in extras is a scar that will follow them until they break it. For a Hops club sitting well back of first in the second half, nights like this are how you stay relevant on a long homestand.

Virahonda continues to show up in the biggest swings. Dix's two-run single was the equalizer that made the walk-off possible. Prospect baseball is supposed to look like this -- names with rankings attached, deciding games in the 11th.

The Close

Some walk-offs are moonshots. This one was a single to right with a ghost runner dancing home. Everett led early. Dix tied it. Virahonda ended it. Hops 3, AquaSox 2 in 11 -- and Hillsboro Ballpark emptied happy.

The film will show Dix's two-run single and Virahonda's walk-off. That is how these nights work -- one early deficit, one middle-inning answer, one extra-inning punch, and the narrative locks in before Saturday's first pitch. Fans leave loud or quiet. Coaches leave with clips. Players leave knowing July does not forgive quiet bats with runners on.

Everett's stranded runners will haunt the film session. Hillsboro's bullpen will get the quiet credit. Virahonda will get the shower of water at home plate. All three are true. Only one of them ends up on the highlight.

Liebano's one-out win credit is the box-score quirk of extra innings -- face almost nobody, get the W. Hintz's loss after one batter is the matching cruel mirror. High-A baseball does not always distribute glory by innings pitched. Sometimes it distributes it by who is on the mound when the walk-off lands.

Everett's first-place second-half standing keeps them in the conversation regardless of one 11-inning scar. Hillsboro's second-half climb needs more nights like this -- short-handed late offense, long bullpen bridges, prospect bats that decide games. Cunningham as ghost runner and Virahonda as hero is a Diamondbacks pipeline postcard.

The six-game series evened at two. Saturday offered a chance at three straight for the Hops. Those are the incremental stakes that make July homestands matter even when the playoff math is still a climb. One walk-off does not fix a standings gap. It does fix a night, and sometimes that is enough to tilt a series.
