PORTLAND, Ore. -- Club America was the designated home side on a Portland pitch, and they played like it mattered. Brian Rodriguez bent a 30-yard free kick into the top left in the sixth minute. Kristoffer Velde equalized in the 19th. Then Isaias Violante and Oscar Perea finished the job in a 3-1 Leagues Cup win on Aug. 9 that ended Portland's five-match unbeaten run.

Attendance was 20,897. America improved to 2-0-0 in the tournament. Portland fell to 1-1-0. Vincent Janssen made his Timbers debut off the bench.

The Goals

Rodriguez's free kick was a statement opener -- right-footed, top corner, early. Velde answered by intercepting a goalkeeper pass, dancing past two defenders, and slotting low for 1-1. The second half belonged to the visitors: Violante finished a rebound off the post in the 63rd, and Perea converted a one-on-one at the near post in the 88th.

Portland finished with 10 shots and four on target. America had 15 and six. The fouls told another story -- 23 from America, 14 from Portland -- a physical night that never quite tilted back after Violante's strike.

What It Means

Velde's equalizer extended his goal-contribution streak to five straight matches across all competitions and pushed him to 12 contributions on the year (5G, 7A). Janssen's debut is a depth note for the stretch run. The loss snapped a 4-0-1 unbeaten run and set up a must-result Thursday against Tijuana to keep Phase One hopes alive.

For America, two wins from two and a free-kick masterclass from Rodriguez travel well. Designated home games on the road are weird optics. Three points are not.

The Close

Some Leagues Cup nights are about survival. This one was about quality from distance and composure after the equalizer. Rodriguez opened the door. Velde briefly closed it. Violante and Perea walked through. Club America 3, Timbers 1 -- and Portland's unbeaten streak was gone under the Providence Park lights.

The film will show the moments that decided it and the ones that almost did. That is how these nights work -- one bounce, one set piece, one finish from distance, and the narrative locks in before the Monday meeting starts. Fans leave loud or quiet. Coaches leave with clips. Players leave with the knowledge that September does not forgive unfinished chances.

Designated home games on the road are tournament quirks. Free kicks into the top corner are not. Rodriguez's sixth-minute strike set a standard America never really abandoned after Velde's opportunistic equalizer. Violante's rebound and Perea's late one-on-one were the finishing touches on a professional away performance in a borrowed stadium label.

Janssen's debut off the bench is a depth note Portland needed as the calendar tips toward the MLS stretch. Velde's five-match contribution streak is the attacking constant. The unbeaten run's end is the cost of facing a Liga MX giant that arrived 2-0-0 and left the same way.

Thursday against Tijuana became must-win math the moment Perea scored. That is how Leagues Cup nights cascade -- one result reshapes the next.
