For 40 minutes on Wednesday night, St. Louis CITY SC had the ball, the crowd and most of the ideas. Then Kristoffer Velde decided the scoreline was boring. In a burst that ran from the 42nd minute to the 48th, either side of halftime, the Norwegian scored twice, David Da Costa scored once, and Energizer Park went very quiet.

The Portland Timbers beat St. Louis CITY SC 3-2, and the final score makes it sound tighter than most of the night felt. St. Louis pulled one back through Daniel Edelman and another through Rafael Navarro in stoppage time, and Portland finished with 10 men after Kamal Miller's late red card. But the damage was done long before that. Velde finished with two goals, Da Costa with a goal and an assist, and Portland with their second straight win.

The Burst Either Side of Halftime

St. Louis started like the better team. Carlo Holse tested the Portland defense early, Damion Downs had a close-range header blocked in the 19th minute, and Navarro should have scored in the 36th when he got his head on a Holse corner from very close range and steered it wide. That one will show up in the St. Louis film session.

Portland had looked sharp only in flashes, with Velde forcing Ben Lundt into a save in the 16th. But in the 42nd, Miller's long pass out to Cole Bassett started it, Bassett slipped Velde in behind on the left, and Velde drove into the box and beat Lundt low to the bottom right corner with his right foot.

Just before the break, Tomas Totland's header was saved by James Pantemis at one end. A minute later, Jimer Fory's one-touch pass down the left sent Da Costa running, and he beat his man and tucked a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner. Portland went to the locker room up 2-0.

St. Louis sent on Jeong Sang-Bin at halftime, but Portland struck again before anyone had settled. Lundt saved Da Costa's first effort in the 48th, Da Costa kept the play alive and found Velde, and Velde lashed a right-footed shot from the left side of the box into the top right corner.

St. Louis Push, Portland Hang On

To their credit, St. Louis did not fold. Lukas MacNaughton and Navarro both had headers in the 53rd and 54th minutes, and in the 58th Holse delivered from the right for Edelman, who headed into the bottom right corner.

Portland's discipline frayed after that. Eric Izoita, Miller, Vincent Janssen and Ian Smith were all booked in the second half. Fory, who set up the second goal, left injured in the 67th. Through all of it, Portland had chances to kill the game, with Alexander Aravena forcing a save from Lundt in the 79th and José Caicedo shooting wide a minute later.

St. Louis finally broke through again in the first minute of seven added. Jeong crossed from the left and Navarro finished from very close range. Miller then picked up a second yellow in the 96th minute, and Pantemis had to make one more save, on Dante Polvara, before the final whistle. It was closer than it needed to be.

Velde, Da Costa and a Milestone Night

Kristoffer Velde had three shots, put all three on target and scored twice. Portland say he now has 10 goals and 10 assists this season, and this was his second brace of 2026. The first came against St. Louis too, on Sept. 9, when he scored twice in a 2-2 draw in Portland. Some players have a favorite opponent. Velde has a favorite city.

David Da Costa was the connective tissue. His goal was his sixth of the season and the assist on Velde's second was his 10th, per the club. Portland's best moments ran through him.

James Pantemis made three saves on his 100th MLS appearance, including the late stop on Polvara.

For St. Louis, Carlo Holse was the most dangerous creator and finished with an assist. Edelman's header was his fifth goal of the season and Navarro's finish his eighth, according to St. Louis.

Turning Point: Navarro's Miss

It is tempting to point at Velde's opener, but the real hinge came six minutes earlier. In the 36th minute, Navarro had a header from point-blank range off a Holse corner and put it wide. St. Louis were the better team at that stage. Score that, and Portland are chasing rather than countering, and the game looks very different. Instead, Portland scored the next three goals, and the night was effectively over.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: St. Louis had 60.4 percent of the ball and completed 374 passes to Portland's 220.
  • Shots on target: Both teams put six on frame. Portland turned three of theirs into goals before the hour mark.
  • Crosses: St. Louis attempted 22 crosses and completed nine, and both of their goals came from deliveries into the box.
  • Clearances: Portland made 27 to St. Louis' 13, which tells you how the last half hour went.
  • Discipline: Portland were booked four times and finished with 10 men. St. Louis were not booked.

What It Means

Portland are 11-7-14 with 40 points, 11th in the West per the club, and have now won two straight while scoring three goals in each. The Timbers say this was the 200th MLS regular-season win in club history, and their 57 goals this season rank fourth in the West and fourth in the club's MLS history. Next up is the regular-season home finale against Houston on Sunday.

St. Louis stay on 51 points after a third straight loss, following a 3-0 defeat at Real Salt Lake on Saturday. They close their home schedule against San Diego FC on Saturday.

Energizer Park drew 22,423, according to the Timbers.

The Closing Take

St. Louis controlled this game the way a cat controls a laser pointer: lots of movement, plenty of enthusiasm, not much to show for it. Portland had less of everything except the three things that matter, and Velde was the reason. Two meetings, four goals for him against St. Louis this season. St. Louis might want to circle No. 99 on the whiteboard for next season.
