Liel Abada's 16-Minute Hat Trick Off the Bench Sends Charlotte FC to the Playoffs in 4-0 Rout of CF Montréal

Liel Abada came off the bench and scored three times in 16 minutes, Idan Toklomati scored for a fifth straight match and Pep Biel had three assists as Charlotte FC beat CF Montréal 4-0 to clinch a fourth straight MLS Cup Playoffs berth.

Liel Abada spent Tuesday afternoon in a sit-down with Dean Smith about whether his manager still trusted him. On Wednesday night he answered the question in 16 minutes.

Off the bench in the 65th minute, the Israeli winger scored in the 67th, 79th and 83rd, turning a nervy one-goal game into a 4-0 Charlotte FC rout of CF Montréal at Bank of America Stadium. The win clinched a place in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs. Idan Toklomati opened the scoring in the seventh minute, Pep Biel finished with three assists, and Kristijan Kahlina hardly had to get his gloves dirty for his sixth clean sheet of the season.

Charlotte came in on a three-game winless run, and the Crown left with its playoff ticket stamped for a fourth straight season. Smith has now made the postseason in every year he has been in charge.

Toklomati Doesn't Wait

Toklomati wanted the early goal and nearly had it in the second minute, going one-on-one down the right before 17-year-old Montréal goalkeeper Samsy Keita turned his shot away. Five minutes later there was nobody to beat. Allan Saint-Maximin bent a cross in from the left, Montréal defender Brayan Vera lost his footing, and Toklomati, completely unmarked in the middle, headed it past Keita.

That made it 15 goals on the season and a goal in five straight matches for Toklomati, extending his own club record. The club says it also tied Karol Świderski's all-competitions scoring mark. If you followed his stoppage-time winner against FC Dallas earlier this month, none of this is a surprise anymore. Toklomati isn't a hot streak at this point. He's what Charlotte's attack is built around.

A Lead That Felt Smaller Than It Was

Here's the thing about 1-0: it looks fine on the scoreboard and feels awful for an hour. Charlotte kept coming but couldn't land the second punch. Djibril Diani headed a 41st-minute corner wide. Right before halftime, Saint-Maximin slipped Biel into the box, and Keita got a fingertip to the shot.

Montréal's best moment came in the 33rd minute, when a header off a corner went over the bar. That was about the extent of the danger at the other end.

Maxi's Frustrating Half Hour

The second half opened as one long Saint-Maximin highlight package with no finish. In the 49th minute he couldn't control a Biel through ball in the box. In the 59th he set up Rodolfo Aloko, whose ball across the middle of the box found nobody. In the 60th came Maxi at his most Maxi: he sold a defender into a slide, stepped around him, and had only Keita to beat. The teenager blocked it over the bar.

Three gilt-edged looks and the margin was still one. Every MLS fan knows how these nights go. You miss them, the other team scrambles one in off a set piece in the 88th minute, and the bus ride home is quiet.

Smith didn't wait around to find out. In the 65th minute he sent on Abada.

The Turning Point: 120 Seconds

Abada needed two minutes. Charlotte broke at speed and Diani found him in the box. Abada made room for the shot and finished past Keita for his sixth goal of the season. The 2-0 lead finally let the stadium breathe, and the game changed with it. Montréal had to push forward, and every push left room in behind for a winger who suddenly wanted the ball every time.

The timing mattered. According to the club, Abada had gone five straight matches without a goal or an assist and wasn't happy about it. Smith noticed it too.

"The last couple of games I felt that he just looked a little bit lacking of confidence," Smith said. "I told him there was no need, we believe in him. Be ready to come on and he agreed and said, 'Yeah, I will be,' and he was and he proved that today."

Sixteen Minutes, Three Goals

The second goal was a passing clinic from the two Israelis. In the 79th minute Toklomati had his defender beaten and could have shot. Instead he saw Abada sprinting alongside him, eased off to open a passing lane, and slipped him in. Abada calmly finished the one-on-one.

The third goal was the prettiest. Nathan Byrne won the ball back with an interception, Abada played it to Biel at the edge of the box, Biel returned it first time, and Abada hit a first-time right-footed shot into the net in the 83rd minute. Then he ran to Biel, held up three fingers and wrapped him in a hug.

It's the third hat trick in Charlotte FC history. Abada joins Daniel Ríos and Toklomati on that list, and MLS named him Player of the Matchday.

"It's really special, to be honest," Abada said. "It's really special to score a hat trick, for every striker, every winger, every player."

The Numbers Behind the Rout

Biel's three assists took him to a club-leading 16 on the season, along with a club-leading 29 goal contributions (13 goals, 16 assists). He's quietly having the best all-around season on the team, and nights like this show it.

Toklomati added a goal and an assist before Smith took him off in the 84th minute for Abdoulaye Doucouré, who made his Charlotte debut. Nathan Richmond came on for Biel at the same time. "I think you could all see the way he handles the ball, his body shape when he receives it," Smith said of Doucouré. "He's a top-class player."

At the other end it was quiet. Kahlina's sixth shutout of the year came with almost nothing to do. "I don't remember in Charlotte from day one when I came that I didn't have even one shot on target," he said.

Charlotte has now scored four goals in a match twice this season. Montréal has been shut out 13 times.

What It Means

For Charlotte (14-10-8, 50 points), the postseason is locked up. Now it's about seeding. The club says Charlotte sits fifth in the Eastern Conference, two points behind fourth-place Chicago Fire FC, and fourth place means hosting in the first round. With two games left, Charlotte can reach 56 points at most. A top-three finish would be the best regular-season finish in club history.

"My job first of all was to go and win a game, to qualify for the playoffs and then see how far we can go," Smith said. "Still two games in the regular season to go and do that, then we'll start thinking about how we approach the playoffs."

For Montréal (6-19-7, 25 points), the season can't end soon enough. It was already eliminated from playoff contention before kickoff, and the winless run is now five games. Leading scorer Prince Owusu missed another match with a lower-body injury, which left Keita, making just his second start, exposed behind a leaky back line.

Orlando Next, Then the Real Thing

Charlotte hosts Orlando City SC on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. in its final home match of the regular season. Montréal heads to New York City FC the same afternoon for its last road game, then hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps on Nov. 7 to finish the season.

Smith had a simple message for Abada on Tuesday: we believe in you. One day later Abada had three goals in 16 minutes and Charlotte had its playoff spot. Going into the night, he was the player Charlotte was worried about. Now he heads into the postseason in form, and his coach looks very smart for backing him.
