Browns vs. Panthers: Deshaun Watson's Late Strike to Harold Fannin Jr. Steals a 21-18 Week 3 Win

Deshaun Watson hit Harold Fannin Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown with 1:48 left and Ronnie Hickman sealed it with an interception as the Browns rallied past the Panthers 21-18 in their home opener.

Deshaun Watson walked into Cleveland's home opener bracing for boos. He walked out with two footballs: the one from the final kneel-down, which he kept, and a game ball from coach Todd Monken.

With 1:48 left, Watson rolled left, found Harold Fannin Jr. alone in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown, then hit Denzel Boston for the two-point conversion, and the Cleveland Browns stole a 21-18 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Huntington Bank Field. Ronnie Hickman's interception with 9 seconds remaining slammed the door, and the Browns are 2-1 after back-to-back comeback wins.

A Field-Goal Duel With a Fourth-Quarter Plot Twist

Nobody scored in the first quarter, even after Cleveland burned 8:55 on a 13-play drive that ended in a punt.

The second quarter belonged to Carolina coach Dave Canales' aggressiveness, just not in the way he planned. Facing fourth-and-3, Bryce Young got swallowed by Mason Graham, Cleveland took over at the Carolina 47 and Andre Szmyt booted a 48-yarder. On the Panthers' next series, they went for it on fourth-and-short from their own 40, and Young's throw for tight end Tommy Tremble came up short. Cleveland cashed in seven plays later, when Fannin slipped into the back right corner on fourth-and-goal from the 2 for Watson's first touchdown pass. 10-0. Isaiah McGuire then dropped Young for a 13-yard loss on third-and-goal, forcing Ryan Fitzgerald's 35-yard field goal before the half.

Then Cleveland handed Carolina a gift to open the third quarter: Malachi Corley fumbled the kickoff, Thomas Incoom recovered for Carolina and Fitzgerald converted from 41. The Browns went three-and-out on three straight possessions, the home crowd let them hear it, and Fitzgerald kept swinging his leg like a metronome. His 53-yarder made it 10-9, and his 37-yarder early in the fourth gave Carolina its first lead, 12-10.

Cleveland's answer came from a receiver who had been silent. Boston's 28-yard catch, his first grab of the day, set up Szmyt's 45-yarder for a 13-12 edge with 7:30 left. Carolina punched back with a 72-yard drive capped by Young's 8-yard touchdown pass to John Metchie III, but Chuba Hubbard was stuffed on the two-point run. Panthers 18, Browns 13, 4:25 to go.

The Turning Point: A Pick That Wasn't

The Browns' final march covered 65 yards in eight plays, and it nearly died twice. Watson kept it alive with a 21-yard scramble on third-and-3. Then, with 2:29 left, Akayleb Evans intercepted Watson's end-zone throw for KC Concepcion. Game over? Nope. Linebacker Bobby Okereke was flagged for roughing the passer, wiping out the pick and handing Cleveland new life.

Watson came out for one play after the hit, came back to cheers, missed Boston on second down and then turned a scramble drill into a touchdown.

"During that whole drive, I told the offensive line that if something happens, give me a lane and I'm going to make something happen with my feet," Watson said. "Harold, I just put the ball in the air and gave him a chance."

Canales knew exactly what that flag cost him.

"We extended the drive for them, and if you give a guy like Deshaun Watson a little bit of extra time, and a few more opportunities, he's going to get creative and find something," Canales said.

Carolina's next drive went nowhere, with Graham sacking Young again in the final two minutes. Cleveland couldn't ice it, but on the Panthers' final lofted throw, Derek Barnett got a hand on Young's pass and Hickman caught the fluttering ball.

"The ball was in the air for a minute and when the ball is in the air for that long, things can go wrong," Hickman said. "So, I was just making sure I was able to catch it."

Key Performances

Deshaun Watson struggled for long stretches and finished 16 of 30 for 144 yards. But he threw both touchdowns, had no turnovers and ran 11 times for 45 yards. Per the AP, it was his 10th fourth-quarter comeback and game-winning drive, coming after 22 months of work to return from two tears of his right Achilles tendon.

Harold Fannin Jr. caught seven passes for 51 yards and both scores, the first multi-touchdown game of his career. The Browns say he's the first Cleveland tight end with two receiving touchdowns in a game since David Njoku on Dec. 2, 2024.

Mason Graham posted career highs with two sacks and seven tackles, plus three tackles for loss. He now has a sack in each of the first three games, joining Myles Garrett in 2019 as the only Browns players to do that, per the team.

For Carolina, Fitzgerald went 4 for 4. Young threw for 291 yards on 48 attempts but completed just 26, and Canales said he is working through a lower-body injury.

Stats That Matter

  • 0 for 3: Carolina on fourth down. Two of those failures turned directly into 10 Cleveland points.
  • 113: Carolina's net yards in the first half, according to the Browns, from an offense that arrived averaging 35.5 points per game.
  • 360 to 259: The yardage gap. Carolina won it and lost the game.
  • 12 for 84: Cleveland's penalties and penalty yards, a number Todd Monken will not frame.

What It Means: Cleveland Has an Identity, Carolina Has Questions

Cleveland opened with a 34-10 loss in Jacksonville, then won 23-19 at Tampa Bay and now this. The defense is the headliner. Graham said the defensive message all week came from coordinator Mike Rutenberg, and it was not subtle.

"Something we preached all week was that we were going to have 60 minutes of hell," Graham said.

Monken gave Rutenberg and the defensive staff a game ball, too. Pittsburgh visits Thursday night, a short week for a team finally stacking wins.

Carolina, meanwhile, goes from a 34-3 rout of Atlanta to a gut punch. Young entered tied for the league lead in touchdown passes, but the Panthers needed four field goals before their first touchdown, and the fourth-down gambles backfired. Detroit visits next Sunday night, and the red zone needs fixing before then.

Closing Take: The Redemption Arc Gets a Scene

Every sports movie needs the moment where the doubted veteran hears the crowd turn. Watson got his in the fourth quarter of a home opener he feared would go sideways.

"It was a warm moment. I got a little teary-eyed feeling that energy because I put so much work to get back here, to be in this moment, to show that I can finish these games and get W's for the city and this organization," Watson said.

Monken, his loudest backer, kept it simple: "I'm really happy for him."
