Twenty-nine seconds. That is all Brandt Bronico needed to put Charlotte FC in front on Saturday night, and the Columbus Crew spent the rest of the evening holding the ball and chasing the game.

Bronico's early strike, a Liel Abada penalty and a Pep Biel finish carried Charlotte to a 3-1 win at Bank of America Stadium. Columbus had nearly 70 percent of the ball and 26 shots, and it still lost by two. Chase Adams' header gave the Crew a moment of history in the first half, but on the scoreboard, this one belonged to the Crown.

Two Goals Before the Crew Woke Up

The opener was over almost before it started. David Schnegg slid a through ball behind the Columbus back line, Bronico timed his run to stay onside, and he finished with his left foot from the left side of the six-yard box into the bottom left corner. Charlotte said the 29-second goal was the third-fastest in club history.

Eight minutes later it was 2-0. Abada drew a foul from Dylan Chambost in the box, then stepped up himself in the ninth minute and sent a right-footed penalty into the bottom left corner. Charlotte noted it was his third goal since returning from the World Cup break.

From there the match turned into a possession clinic by the visitors, with Charlotte content to sit in and counter. Patrick Schulte kept it at two with a save on Biel in the 13th minute, while Columbus piled up attempts: Lautaro Giaccone missed in the 19th, Tarun Karumanchi had a header blocked in the 23rd, and Adams missed in the 24th and had another shot blocked in the 28th.

The breakthrough came in the 41st minute, when Adams headed in from very close range. Columbus said the cross came from Brooks Lennon, though ESPN's match data lists no assist. Adams kept pushing and sent one wide in first-half stoppage time, and Schulte had to save from Idan Toklomati on the other end before the break.

The Second Half Siege

Both coaches shook things up at halftime. Charlotte sent on Allan Saint-Maximin for his MLS debut, and Columbus made three changes, bringing on Steven Moreira, André Gomes and Brais Méndez. The Crew's pressure turned into a block party: in the 54th minute alone, Méndez, Gomes and Malte Amundsen all had shots blocked. Charlotte lost Nathan Byrne to an injury in the 56th, with Will Cleary replacing him, while Archie Goodwin came on for Toklomati.

Columbus kept the ball, but Charlotte kept getting the better looks. Abada sent one just past the top right corner in the 69th minute, set up by Saint-Maximin, and four minutes later the hosts put it away. Charlotte said Saint-Maximin started the move with a pass through multiple defenders, Biel carried it into the final third, and Rodolfo Aloko, on for only two minutes, supplied the final ball. Biel finished with his left foot from the middle of the box into the bottom left corner.

The Crew's late push produced plenty of noise. Josef Martínez, on for his Columbus debut, missed in the 81st minute, Chambost sent a shot just wide in the 84th, and Kristijan Kahlina saved from Taha Habroune in the 85th. In stoppage time, Kahlina stopped Habroune again and then Lennon in the space of a minute, and Méndez put one just over the bar.

Who Delivered

Brandt Bronico took one shot and scored with it, and it set the tone for everything that followed.

Liel Abada drew the penalty and converted it, then nearly added another in the second half.

Pep Biel scored the clincher and put two of his three shots on target. Charlotte said he was returning from a one-game suspension in Leagues Cup.

Kristijan Kahlina made three saves, all of them after the 80th minute, when Columbus finally started putting shots on frame.

For Columbus, Chase Adams had the night of his young career. In his first MLS start, the club said, he became the Crew's youngest-ever goal scorer in a league match, at 18 years and 120 days. "It's surreal," Adams said. "It's what I've been trying to get to since I've come to Columbus."

The Turning Point

The real damage was done in the first nine minutes, but the deciding swing came in the 73rd. Columbus was in the middle of its best spell of pressure, with three blocked shots in the 54th minute, a blocked Habroune effort in the 70th and Méndez firing high and wide in the 71st. Charlotte's counter, sparked by a debutant and finished by Biel, ended the comeback before it had a chance to grow.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Columbus 69.9 percent, Charlotte 30.1 percent.
  • Shots: Columbus 26, Charlotte 9. On target: Charlotte 7, Columbus 4.
  • Blocked: 11 Columbus shots were blocked.
  • Corners: Columbus 13, Charlotte 1.
  • Clearances: Charlotte 27, Columbus 9.

What It Means

Charlotte moved to 8-4-7 with 28 points and bounced back from a 2-1 loss at Chicago on Aug. 1. The Crown head to Toronto FC on Wednesday night.

Columbus fell to 5-5-9 with 20 points. Interim head coach Laurent Courtois, who handed Adams the start, did not hedge on the decision. "I don't do any favors. Young or old, he deserved it," Courtois said. The Crew host CF Montréal on Wednesday, the first of four matches in 11 days, and Lennon is already excited about his new teammate. "We have a really strong connection on the field and as well off the field," Lennon said of Martínez.

Efficiency Beats Volume

Columbus played like a team running a perfect practice drill, and Charlotte played like a team that had read the cheat codes. Nine shots, seven on target, three goals. The Crew can point to the possession numbers all they want, but this was a reminder that the scoreboard does not award style points. Adams summed up the vibe on his own side: "I think the main goal for all of us, though, was the result before any other record."
