Kristijan Kahlina Makes Six Saves as Charlotte FC Edge NYCFC 2-1 at Citi Field
Idan Toklomati and Kerwin Vargas scored and Kristijan Kahlina made six saves as Charlotte FC beat New York City FC 2-1 at Citi Field despite being outshot 22-7.

New York City FC spent Saturday night at Citi Field doing nearly everything a home team is supposed to do. They held the ball for 63.7 percent of the match, fired 22 shots, won six corners to Charlotte's one and camped so deep in the visitors' half that the Crown's back line could have started receiving mail there. Then Kristijan Kahlina kept saying no, and Charlotte kept saying thank you.
Charlotte FC won 2-1 in front of 20,997 fans, getting goals from Idan Toklomati and Kerwin Vargas plus six saves from a goalkeeper who has turned this kind of night into a personal brand. Nicolás Fernández's stoppage-time rocket made the last few minutes sweaty, but it arrived too late to matter. Charlotte's own recap also pointed out who was on the other side: the team that knocked the Crown out of the 2025 MLS playoffs. Revenge served at 7:30 p.m. ET, lightly seasoned.
Forty-Five Minutes of Knocking
NYCFC came out like a team that had been told the door was unlocked. Kai Trewin dragged a left-footed shot wide in the fifth minute after Hannes Wolf led a quick break, and Fernández tested Kahlina from distance in the 16th, forcing a save in the bottom right corner.
Then the pressure turned into a siege. In the 24th minute, Tayvon Gray slipped Agustín Ojeda through on the right, Kahlina stopped the shot, and Wolf's follow-up was blocked. Four minutes later Trewin had another effort blocked after Wolf set him up. In the 32nd, Kevin O'Toole whipped in a cross and Ojeda headed it off the left post from inside the six-yard box. Raul Gustavo then nodded a corner over the bar in the 37th.
Charlotte spent most of the half in emergency mode. Brandt Bronico was booked in the third minute, Gustavo picked up a yellow of his own in the 17th, and the visitors went to the locker room level only because their goalkeeper and their woodwork had both shown up. At the break, Charlotte sent Andrew Privett on for Tim Ream.
The Crown Hit First
Nine minutes into the second half, Charlotte did what every underdog in the possession column is told to do: make one good look count. Harry Toffolo fed Toklomati in the middle of the box, and the forward finished with his right foot through the center of the goal to beat Matt Freese. One shot, one goal. Efficiency so extreme it should come with a spreadsheet.
NYCFC answered with volume. Maxi Moralez curled one toward the top right corner in the 66th minute, and Kahlina got there. Head coach Pascal Jansen sent on Talles Magno for Ojeda a minute later; NYCFC's recap noted the Brazilian was coming off a hat trick in Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup win over Westchester SC. Moralez then found Gustavo for a header that sailed high and wide in the 69th, and Gray's drive from distance in the 75th ended in Kahlina's gloves.
The Turning Point: The 84th-Minute Scramble
If the home side was ever going to crack Kahlina, it was in the 84th minute. Off a corner, Moralez's cross found Talles Magno, whose header from very close range was blocked. The ball came back to Magno, and his right-footed follow-up was blocked too. Gray took his turn from the center of the box. Blocked again. Three shots in the same minute, zero goals, and a Charlotte penalty area that looked like a mosh pit.
Kahlina was also shown a yellow card in that same minute, and five minutes later he was back at work, saving from Fernández and then from Talles Magno in the 89th. That stretch was the whole night in miniature. Then Charlotte found air at the other end in the 90th minute: Pep Biel teed up Vargas, who had come on for Rodolfo Aloko in the 69th, and the substitute slotted a left-footed finish into the bottom left corner. 2-0.
Fernández's reply in the third minute of stoppage time was a beauty, a left-footed strike from outside the box into the top right corner with Wolf credited for the assist. It just came with no time left to build on it. Archie Goodwin nearly restored the two-goal cushion a minute later, but Freese stopped him.
Star Watch
Kahlina was the obvious headliner. ESPN's data credits him with six saves (Charlotte's own count had seven), and the club noted he was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for the ninth time since joining in 2022. Charlotte also reminded everyone he was the 2024 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, which, after this performance, felt less like trivia and more like a warning label.
Toklomati made his only shot count before giving way to Goodwin in the 77th minute. Toffolo supplied the opener, and Biel picked up the assist on the clincher before leaving in stoppage time for Djibril Diani. Vargas needed just one shot to score.
For NYCFC, Fernández put all three of his shots on target and scored the late goal. Wolf added an assist and two shots, while Talles Magno launched four attempts off the bench and got just one on frame. Moralez was caught offside three times, which says plenty about how often NYCFC were living on the last defender's shoulder.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: NYCFC 63.7 percent, Charlotte 36.3 percent.
- Shots: NYCFC 22, Charlotte 7. On target: 7 to 5.
- Saves: Kahlina 6, Freese 2.
- Corners: NYCFC 6, Charlotte 1.
- Clearances: Charlotte 34, NYCFC 23.
What It Means
Charlotte climbs to 4-2-2 with 14 points, and the club said the win left it third in the Eastern Conference. It was a timely response to a 2-1 home loss to Nashville SC the previous weekend, and it gave the Crown four of a possible nine points on the road this season, per the club. The trip is far from over: Charlotte visits Orlando City on Wednesday and Nashville on Saturday.
NYCFC drop to 3-2-3 with 11 points. That is two straight league losses, after a 2-0 defeat at Vancouver the week before, and four league matches without a win, a run that started with a 3-2 home loss to Inter Miami on March 22. They host FC Cincinnati on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Closing Take
NYCFC had the possession, the corners, the crosses and the shot count of a team that should have cruised. Charlotte had the goalkeeper. In this league, that trade still works more often than the analytics folks would like. Kahlina treated every NYCFC attempt like a spam call, decline, decline, decline, and the Crown walked out of Citi Field with three points and a little payback for last year's playoff exit.
