Max Arfsten Sets the Tone as the Columbus Crew Blank the Philadelphia Union 2-0
Max Arfsten scored in the 4th minute and set up a stoppage-time own goal as the Columbus Crew beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0 for a second straight win.

It took Max Arfsten four minutes to find the trapdoor in Philadelphia's back line, and the Union spent the rest of Saturday night in Ohio trying to nail it shut.
The Columbus Crew beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0 at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, riding Arfsten's early finish and a first-half stoppage-time own goal to a second straight win. Patrick Schulte banked his second shutout of the season, per the AP, while the 2025 Supporters' Shield winners left with a loss, a late red card and a three-game unbeaten run in pieces.
Four Minutes, One Footrace
Columbus clearly had a plan. The Crew's own coverage described Philadelphia arriving with a choppy high press and Henrik Rydström's side answering by going long and getting in behind. It worked almost instantly. Arfsten won a footrace into the box and poked a left-footed finish through the middle of the goal in the 4th minute, beating Andre Blake before the Union had found their feet.
He nearly had a second two minutes later. Taha Habroune slipped him through on goal, and only a sharp Blake save kept it at one. Sékou Bangoura then forced Blake into another stop in the 22nd minute with an effort from distance aimed at the top right corner.
Philadelphia had flickers. Philippe Ndinga, a new signing handed a start in the back line, missed the target twice in the first 18 minutes, and Danley Jean Jacques headed a corner over in the 20th.
Chaos Before the Whistle
Jean Jacques was booked in the 39th minute, Bangoura followed for a bad foul in the 45th, and VAR took a long look before leaving that card yellow. According to the Union's recap, the review came from a clash in which Bangoura came down on Nathan Harriel's leg, with the contact judged accidental.
Then Columbus doubled the lead in the cruelest way available. Three minutes into stoppage time, Arfsten broke down the right and drilled a low ball across the box. The AP described Harriel's clearance attempt ricocheting off Blake and into the net, and ESPN logged it as a Harriel own goal.
That one stings. The Union noted the start was Harriel's 100th in MLS play, making him the first Homegrown in club history to reach that milestone. Nobody writes the anniversary party where the cake lands in your own net, but here we are.
Philadelphia's luck stayed rotten. Jesús Bueno was hurt in the buildup to that goal, per the Union, and was replaced by Jovan Lukic deep in stoppage time. Bradley Carnell then used his second change at halftime, sending Ben Bender on for Ndinga.
The Union Push, Schulte Shrugs
The visitors came out of the break with more urgency. Bruno Damiani had a shot blocked in the 61st minute and headed wide a minute later, Jean Jacques nodded another one over, and Milan Iloski finally tested Schulte from outside the box in the 64th. The Union's recap called it Philadelphia's first shot on target of the night.
Rydström sent on Jamal Thiaré and Dániel Gazdag in the 70th, and the Crew spent long stretches making the game deliberately, beautifully boring.
The final 10 minutes still had subplots. Bangoura left injured in the 81st minute for Amar Sejdic, and Mohamed Farsi replaced Arfsten in the same window. The Crew said it was Farsi's first appearance since July 6, 2025, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation. He nearly celebrated with a goal, forcing Blake into a save from distance in the 90th. Bender answered with a strike that Schulte saved in stoppage time, and four minutes into added time Japhet Sery Larsen was shown a straight red after a foul on Thiaré.
Arfsten's World Cup Audition
Max Arfsten was the best player on the field and it was not especially close. Two shots, two on target, one goal and the cross that produced the second. MLSsoccer.com noted he has three goals and two assists in his last five league appearances and framed the night as part of his push for a place on Mauricio Pochettino's U.S. World Cup roster. He was also flagged offside twice, the tax for living on the last defender's shoulder.
He kept it measured afterward. "We are definitely trying to build off of this," Arfsten told Apple TV, per MLSsoccer.com. "There are still a lot of things that we can do better, for sure."
Patrick Schulte did not have a busy night, but he handled every knock at the door. Two saves, including Bender's late effort, and a clean sheet.
Andre Blake kept Philadelphia within reach with four saves, including the early stop on Arfsten.
The Turning Point
The stoppage-time own goal changed the math. At 1-0, Philadelphia's second-half flurry is a genuine chase. At 2-0, with Bueno gone and the back line reshuffled at halftime, it was a mountain, and two shots on target all night is not how anyone climbs one.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on target: Columbus put 4 of 7 shots on goal. Philadelphia took 10 and put 2 on target.
- Possession: The Crew had 56 percent of the ball and completed 397 passes to the Union's 285.
- Saves: Blake made four, Schulte two.
- Discipline: Philadelphia committed 18 fouls to Columbus' 11 and finished with 10 men.
What It Means
Columbus is now 3-3-4 with 12 points, and after Wednesday's 2-1 win over LA Galaxy, the Crew have doubled their points total in a week. The club's coverage noted Columbus is unbeaten in six of its last seven across all competitions. Rydström sounded like a coach who believes the corner has been turned. "We are getting better and better as a team," he said. Next up is One Knoxville SC in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, then Minnesota United at home on May 2.
Philadelphia falls to 1-2-7 with five points. The AP noted the Union opened the season with a six-game losing streak, the longest in club history, and the 2-1 win in Montréal, the 0-0 draw with D.C. United and the 3-3 draw in Toronto had started to steady things. This was the Union's third match in seven days, per the club, and the rotation showed. Nashville SC visits Subaru Park on May 2.
Closing Take
Columbus found the cheat code: skip the opponent's press and kick it over the top for a guy who runs like he is late for a flight to the World Cup. Arfsten knows the job is not done. "I feel like this club is used to being towards the top of the table, and it's something we still got to kind of strive for," he said. Two straight wins is a start. The striving continues Wednesday.
