D.C. United took 31 shots on Saturday night. Thirty-one. Eleven of them were on target, two more hit the crossbar, and the Black-and-Red's own goalkeeper went up for a stoppage-time corner and headed one wide. It still was not enough, because Kristijan Kahlina was in the other goal.

Charlotte FC won 2-1 at Audi Field behind 10 saves from Kahlina, a long-range strike from Ashley Westwood and the first Charlotte goal of Allan Saint-Maximin's career. The win stretched Charlotte's unbeaten run to eight matches and gave Dean Smith his 50th win in all competitions as the club's head coach, per Charlotte.

Westwood Draws First Blood

D.C. came out flying. Tai Baribo headed a Kimito Nono cross wide in the 16th minute, Brandon Servania forced Kahlina into a save a minute later, and Kye Rowles had a header stopped in the 19th. Charlotte answered on the break, with Liel Abada testing Sean Johnson twice in four minutes.

Then, in the 22nd minute, Westwood decided he had seen enough. The midfielder struck a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner, and Charlotte led 1-0 against the run of play.

D.C. kept coming. Kahlina stopped Louis Munteanu after a João Peglow through ball in the 25th minute, saved from Jackson Hopkins in the 32nd and denied Baribo in the 38th. Munteanu fired over twice before halftime. At the break, Charlotte led a game it had no business leading.

Bartlett Levels, the Bar Rattles

D.C. needed just two minutes of the second half to break through. Keisuke Kurokawa swung in a set piece and captain Lucas Bartlett headed it in from very close range. 1-1.

What followed was a siege. Baribo smashed a shot off the crossbar in the 51st minute. Kahlina saved Bartlett's header in the 53rd. Andre Dozzell tried from distance in the 60th, and Kahlina was there again. Baribo forced another save in the 66th and had a header blocked in the 68th.

Smith reacted in the 69th minute, sending on Rodolfo Aloko for Abada and Harry Toffolo for David Schnegg. Two minutes later, Charlotte struck. Westwood found Saint-Maximin on the left, and the summer signing finished from a tight angle into the bottom right corner. 2-1.

Kahlina Closes the Door

D.C. threw everything forward. Munteanu cracked a shot off the crossbar from outside the box in the 75th minute. Kahlina made a diving save on Matti Peltola in the 80th and denied Munteanu again in the 85th. Bartlett had the ball in the net in the 87th, per D.C., but he was flagged offside. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Johnson came up for a corner and nodded his header wide to the left.

Charlotte survived. It was not pretty, but road wins rarely are.

The Wall and the Closer

Kahlina's 10 saves were the difference, plain and simple. He faced 11 shots on target and let in one, from point-blank range. His 10 saves came against eight different D.C. players, which tells you how many people had a crack at him.

Westwood scored one and set up the other, and MLS named him to its Team of the Matchday bench. The goal arrived out of nowhere, and the assist came at exactly the right moment.

MLS counts five assists for Saint-Maximin in eight league matches since he arrived from RC Lens, and now he has a goal to go with them. His winner came from an angle most players would have crossed from.

Abada was busy at the other end, putting all three of his shots on target, only for Johnson to turn each of them away.

For D.C., Munteanu was relentless, taking 10 shots, but only two hit the target. Bartlett scored and defended well, but the finishing never matched the volume.

The Turning Point

Westwood's pass to Saint-Maximin in the 71st minute changed the game. Saint-Maximin had already flashed a shot just wide in the 56th, a warning D.C. did not heed. D.C. had been knocking on the door since halftime, and Charlotte's best chance to win was to make one clean play. It did exactly that.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: D.C. 31, Charlotte 10.
  • On target: D.C. 11, Charlotte 7.
  • Saves: Kahlina 10, Johnson 5.
  • Woodwork: D.C. hit the crossbar twice.
  • Clearances: Charlotte made 34 to D.C.'s 17.
  • Crosses: D.C. sent in 32 to Charlotte's 17.

What It Means

Charlotte moved to 12-7-7 with 43 points. MLS said the win lifted the club to fourth in the Eastern Conference, a spot that would bring home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs, and Charlotte has now gone five wins and three draws in its last eight. This was also the final stop of a three-match road trip that produced seven points, the club said.

Smith reached 50 wins in his 112th game in charge, by his own count, and did not want the milestone to be about him. "It's a good record, but we want to just keep winning them," he said. "It's not about my records, it's about the Club and the players," he said, per Charlotte.

D.C. fell to 6-11-8 with 29 points and, per the club, sits 12th in the East. The Black-and-Red had been unbeaten in two, after a 2-1 win over Columbus and a 0-0 draw with Atlanta, and this was the kind of performance that usually earns at least a point. D.C. also lost the first meeting 3-1 in Charlotte on Aug. 22 and by its own count has two wins, seven losses and a draw all-time against Charlotte in the regular season. The Black-and-Red head to Vancouver next.

Closing Take

Sometimes the box score lies. This one told the truth: D.C. United outshot Charlotte by a three-to-one margin and still lost because Kahlina played like somebody had cranked his difficulty slider to legend and everyone else's to rookie. "Every win, you probably don't enjoy the wins as much as you should because you're always thinking about the next game," Smith said. This one, he should enjoy.
