Louis Munteanu Scores Twice as D.C. United Beat NYCFC 2-0 for First Back-to-Back Wins of 2026
Louis Munteanu scored from close range and from the penalty spot, and Sean Johnson made four saves, as D.C. United beat New York City FC 2-0 at Citi Field despite 27 percent possession.

New York City FC had the ball for almost three-quarters of Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. D.C. United had Louis Munteanu, and that turned out to be the better deal.
Munteanu scored from close range in the 29th minute and converted a penalty in the 75th as D.C. United beat New York City FC 2-0 in front of 23,931 fans. Sean Johnson made four saves for the clean sheet, and the Black-and-Red, by the club's count, won back-to-back matches for the first time this season. NYCFC finished with 72.6 percent possession and 625 passes. D.C. finished with 19 shots, three points and absolutely no interest in apologizing for how it got them.
D.C. Comes Out Swinging
The visitors set the tempo early, and it was not a possession tempo. Agustín Ojeda fired just wide for New York City in the third minute, but D.C. answered with a flurry. Brandon Servania forced Matt Freese into saves from outside the box in the seventh and 12th minutes, João Peglow went over the bar on a fast break in the eighth and wide off a set piece in the 16th, and Munteanu's dipping effort from distance flew just wide in the 17th. René Weiler's side was not keeping the ball for long, but every time it had it, it was looking for goal.
The breakthrough came from the least glamorous weapon in the sport. According to NYCFC, a D.C. long throw into the box bounced off Kai Trewin's foot and fell to Munteanu, and the striker beat Freese from very close range in the 29th minute. Throw-ins do not trend on social media. They do win games.
New York City's afternoon got worse in the 36th minute, when Aiden O'Neill came off injured and Andrés Perea replaced him. The hosts did push back before halftime. Nicolás Fernández lifted a free kick over the wall in the 38th, and Johnson, a former NYCFC goalkeeper, made what the home side called an acrobatic save. Johnson also gathered a Trewin shot from the edge of the area in the 43rd. At the other end, another long throw dropped into a crowded box, and Freese had to stop Jackson Hopkins from point-blank range in the 44th.
The Turning Point: Johnson Holds, Then the Penalty
The second half belonged to NYCFC in terms of the ball, if not the scoreboard. Perea headed wide off a corner in the 47th minute, and the hosts briefly had the ball in the net in the 54th, but Ojeda was flagged offside. Four minutes later came the save of the game: Fernández let fly from just outside the area, and Johnson got a hand to it.
That stop mattered because D.C. never let the door open again. Weiler brought on Nikola Markovic and Aarón Herrera at the hour mark, while Pascal Jansen countered with Hannes Wolf and Keaton Parks in the 63rd. Perea headed another corner wide in the 65th, and Munteanu tested Freese from distance in the 72nd.
A minute later, Parks fouled D.C. captain Lucas Bartlett in the box, and the penalty was given. NYCFC said the contact came after another D.C. long throw. Munteanu converted in the 75th minute with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner, and the game was effectively over. He nearly added a third on a fast break three minutes later, shooting just wide, before Jacob Murrell replaced him.
Eight minutes of stoppage time produced a few nervy moments. Freese saved a Herrera shot, Johnson stopped a Trewin header, and Parks headed over from close range off a corner. D.C. survived all of it.
Star Watch: Munteanu and Johnson
Munteanu was the difference. He took six shots, put three on target and scored twice before leaving in the 78th minute. He was a constant threat from range and lethal from close range, and the penalty was taken with zero drama.
Johnson was just as important. He made four saves, including two on Fernández and two on Trewin, and D.C. said it was the club's fourth shutout of the 2026 season. Facing his former club only adds to the story.
At the back, D.C. said Kye Rowles finished with 17 defensive contributions and 12 clearances. Servania, who took four shots, was also credited by the club with nine recoveries and six passes into the final third. For NYCFC, Freese made five saves and kept the margin respectable, while Fernández put both of his shots on target.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: New York City 72.6 percent, D.C. United 27.4 percent.
- Shots: D.C. United 19, New York City 9. D.C. put seven on target to NYCFC's four.
- Passing: New York City completed 533 of 625 passes. D.C. completed 142 of 232.
- Tackles: D.C. United made 34 tackles to New York City's 16.
- Saves: Freese five, Johnson four.
What It Means
D.C. United improves to 4-3-4 with 15 points. After a 3-2 home win over Orlando City SC on April 25, this was the club's first set of consecutive wins in 2026, and Weiler made only one change to that lineup, bringing in Jared Stroud for Herrera. D.C. heads to Nashville SC on Saturday, May 9.
New York City drops to 3-3-5 with 12 points and has now gone seven league matches without a win, with two draws and five losses since beating the Colorado Rapids 3-1 on March 14. The frustrating part is that NYCFC arrived with momentum after a midweek U.S. Open Cup win over the Red Bulls, according to the club. Jansen also had to reshuffle late: NYCFC said Talles Magno picked up a small strain in warmups, with Malachi Jones stepping into the lineup, and Tanasijevic started in place of the suspended Tayvon Gray. NYCFC hosts the Columbus Crew on Sunday, May 10.
Closing Take
Possession is a tool, not a trophy. NYCFC passed the ball around Citi Field like a band playing its greatest hits to a half-interested crowd, while D.C. showed up with a long throw, a striker in form and a goalkeeper facing his old club. It was a smash-and-grab with a game plan, and it worked twice over.
For D.C., the takeaway is that a team does not need the ball to control a game, as long as it controls the boxes. For NYCFC, the winless run has reached seven, and the possession numbers are starting to look like a stat that comforts nobody.
