Kye Rowles had gone a full MLS season without a goal contribution. Then, with the clock showing 90 minutes and Audi Field holding its breath, the center back headed home from close range off a corner and sent D.C. United into a frenzy.

D.C. United beat Orlando City SC 3-2 on Saturday night, scoring twice in the final six minutes of regulation to erase a 2-1 deficit. Louis Munteanu tied it in the 84th minute with his first career MLS goal, Rowles won it in the 90th, and Orlando's interim coach Martín Perelman was left explaining how a night his team spent mostly on the ball ended with nothing.

Hopkins Strikes, Orlando Knocks

D.C. came out flying. In the 10th minute Jackson Hopkins took a pass from Keisuke Kurokawa, a first-year defender per the AP, and hit a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner. It was his first goal of the 2026 season, according to the club.

Orlando answered by taking the ball and refusing to give it back. The Lions finished with 61.5 percent possession and spent a chunk of the first half winning corners. Iago Teodoro headed two Martín Ojeda corners wide in the 32nd and 35th minutes, and Ojeda dragged an effort from range wide in the 15th.

Munteanu, meanwhile, was a one-man fire alarm. Back in the lineup in place of Tai Baribo, per D.C. United, he forced Maxime Crépeau into saves in the 27th and 28th minutes. Kurokawa tested Crépeau again from distance in the 37th, but the Orlando goalkeeper kept the gap at one going into the break.

Twelve Minutes of Orlando

Both coaches went to the bench at halftime, with Jared Stroud replacing Aarón Herrera for D.C. and Griffin Dorsey coming on for Zakaria Taifi. Stroud nearly made an instant impact, drawing saves from Crépeau in the 47th and 55th minutes.

Then the game flipped. In the 56th minute, Sean Johnson saved a Dorsey header, and in that same minute Justin Ellis finished from very close range into the top left corner. The AP described Ellis as an 18-year-old rookie, and Orlando City noted it was his first MLS goal.

Eleven minutes later Orlando led. Tyrese Spicer, on for Tiago in the 61st minute, ran in behind onto a pass from Adrián Marín and finished low into the bottom right corner with his left foot. It was his first goal of the season, per the AP.

"Pretty good goal, can't lie," Spicer said afterward, and nobody in Orlando colors would argue.

Orlando could have put it away. Johnson stopped Ellis twice, saving a header in the 74th minute and a left-footed shot in the 78th. Those two saves look a lot bigger now.

The Six-Minute Comeback

René Weiler reached for his bench in the 77th, sending on Nikola Markovic and Jacob Murrell. Both ended up with assists.

In the 84th minute, Markovic teed up Munteanu outside the box and the Romanian forward sent a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. It was his first career MLS goal, per D.C. United, and he had been knocking on that door all night.

Nine minutes of added time were announced, but D.C. did not need them. In the 90th minute Murrell delivered from a corner, and Rowles headed in from close range through the middle of the goal. D.C. then saw out the rest, collecting two more yellow cards in stoppage time on the way to the whistle.

Who Made the Difference

Louis Munteanu led everyone with five shots, put three on target and scored the equalizer. He also picked up a yellow card, which feels like the correct amount of chaos for this performance.

Kye Rowles scored the winner. The AP noted he had no goal contributions in 31 matches last season, his first in the league, and D.C. United said this was his first goal of 2026.

Sean Johnson made three saves, and the two on Ellis kept the comeback possible.

Justin Ellis was Orlando's most dangerous player: three shots, all three on target, one goal. Perelman was effusive. "He has a lot of talent and he helps us a lot," he said.

Nikola Markovic came on in the 77th and assisted the equalizer seven minutes later, his second assist in his sixth match, per the AP.

The Turning Point

The 78th minute. Ellis had a chance to put Orlando 3-1 up, Johnson got down to stop it, and six minutes later D.C. were level. Without that save, the late rally is a footnote. With it, it is the story of the night.

Spicer put the collapse in plain words. "I just think there was a lack of concentration in key moments of the game and that cost us the game, honestly," he said.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Orlando held 61.5 percent and completed 392 passes to D.C.'s 210.
  • Shots: D.C. outshot Orlando 15-8 and put 8 on target to Orlando's 5.
  • Saves: Crépeau made five, Johnson three.
  • Clearances: D.C. made 31 clearances as Orlando sent in 24 crosses.
  • Cards: D.C. collected five yellow cards to Orlando's three.

What It Means

D.C. United move to 3-3-4 with 12 points. Counting from the season's results, this was their first win since a 2-1 victory at Chicago on March 14 and their first home win since beating Philadelphia on opening night. After a 4-4 draw with Red Bull New York on Wednesday, the club noted D.C. have scored seven goals in two matches, which is a sharp turn from a team that had gone four straight matches without scoring before that. Next up is New York City FC at Citi Field on May 3.

Orlando fall to 2-1-7 with seven points and lose the momentum from Wednesday's 4-1 home win over Charlotte. The AP noted Orlando had gone 2-0-1 in the three previous meetings with D.C. and outscored them 10-2, so this one stings twice. Perelman, who said Orlando still have five injured players, kept the bigger picture in view. "Of course, disappointed with the result after the effort to come back in the game," he said. "This is the game, but there were some good things." Orlando visit Inter Miami next Saturday.

Closing Take

This had the shape of a heist movie where the crew does everything right, cracks the vault, and gets caught in the parking lot. Orlando had the ball, the goals and the lead. D.C. had Munteanu, a corner kick and a center back who had waited a full season for his moment. Sometimes that is enough.
