JT Marcinkowski Saves Timo Werner's Stoppage-Time Penalty as Galaxy Hold Earthquakes 1-1
JT Marcinkowski saved Timo Werner's stoppage-time penalty against his former club as the LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 at Stanford Stadium.

JT Marcinkowski came up through San Jose's academy, made 95 starts for the Earthquakes over five seasons, and on Saturday night he returned to face them for the first time. With the Galaxy clinging to a 1-1 draw in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Timo Werner placed the ball on the spot. Marcinkowski, who had given away the penalty himself by fouling Ousseni Bouda two minutes earlier, saved Werner's right-footed kick in the bottom right corner.
"I think I was just trying to make up for the little bit of a mistake that I made," Marcinkowski said, per the Galaxy. Mission accomplished. The LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 in the 105th California Clásico in front of 43,026 at Stanford Stadium, which San Jose said was the seventh-highest attendance for an MLS game this season.
The Galaxy Strike on the Break
San Jose started on the front foot. Bouda headed over in the second minute, Beau Leroux fired high in the eighth, Marcinkowski saved from Jack Skahan in the ninth, and Nick Fernandez had a shot blocked in the 10th. Then came two straight San Jose corners, and right after them the Galaxy broke the other way.
The Galaxy said Harbor Miller carried the counter down the right before finding Marco Reus, who slipped the ball ahead for Joseph Paintsil. In the 13th minute Paintsil hit it first time, a right-footed shot from the middle of the box into the bottom left corner. Textbook transition goal.
San Jose had to reshuffle early when Jonathan González went off injured in the 20th minute, with Ian Harkes replacing him. Werner had already gone close from outside the box in the 18th, and the Quakes kept pushing: Daniel Munie headed over off a set piece in the 21st, and Leroux and Harkes both went close in the final minutes of the half. The Galaxy picked up two yellow cards, to Lucas Sanabria and Julián Aude, and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Roberts Finds the Equalizer
Marcinkowski was busy early in the second half, stopping Werner in the 50th and a Benji Kikanovic header in the 53rd. Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney sent on Elijah Wynder and John Nelson in the 60th, and two minutes later San Jose finally broke through. Both clubs said a Werner free kick came back off the crossbar, and in the scramble that followed Kikanovic had a shot blocked before Reid Roberts poked the ball in from very close range. San Jose credited Munie with the assist. Per the club, it was Roberts' second goal of the season.
The Galaxy nearly answered right away. Paintsil hit the left post from the middle of the box in the 68th, and Angus Gunn had to make his only save of the night on a Paintsil shot in the 83rd. San Jose's clearest look before stoppage time fell to Bouda, who missed from the right side of the six-yard box off a Darius Johnson cross in the 76th.
The Save
Then came the moment that defined the night. In the third minute of stoppage time, Marcinkowski brought down Bouda and the referee pointed to the spot. Werner, San Jose's captain for the night, stepped up two minutes later. Marcinkowski guessed right. Kikanovic and Harkes both had late looks, and Kikanovic and Paintsil were booked in the closing moments, but nobody scored again.
Who Stood Out
JT Marcinkowski made four saves, the last of them the penalty. A former Quakes homegrown, he played his old club for the first time and left Stanford as the reason the Galaxy had a point.
Joseph Paintsil scored, hit the post and forced a save, finishing with five shots and two on target. The Galaxy said it was his fourth league goal of the season.
Marco Reus set up the opener with the pass that sprung Paintsil.
Reid Roberts delivered the equalizer from a set piece, which is exactly the kind of goal you need when a team defends as deep as the Galaxy did.
Timo Werner put two of his four shots on target, but the penalty will be what he remembers.
The Turning Point
Marcinkowski's save. San Jose had 20 shots, the Galaxy had nine, and the hosts had a penalty in stoppage time to turn all of that pressure into a win. A goalkeeper who conceded the penalty erased it.

What It Means
San Jose moved to 10-3-4 with 33 points and, per the club, remains tied on points for first place in the Western Conference with Vancouver, behind on goal difference. According to the AP, the Quakes played without Preston Judd, their leader with 11 goals, and captain Ronaldo Vieira because of yellow card accumulation, and Gunn was making his second start after debuting in a 4-0 home loss to Orlando City on Wednesday. San Jose visits FC Cincinnati on Aug. 1.
The Galaxy moved to 5-6-7 with 21 points. San Jose's notes listed them 11th in the West. The AP noted the Galaxy had lost back-to-back games by a combined 6-1 and are now winless in three since the World Cup break. They host FC Dallas on Aug. 1. The Galaxy said this was the 19th regular-season draw in the rivalry, which LA leads 40-29-19 in league play.
"I was super proud of these guys for the response and the effort," Vanney said.
The Homecoming Plot Twist
Every sports movie sequel needs the returning hero who spoils the old neighborhood's big night. Bruce Arena called the Clásico "the best rivalry in Major League Soccer," and this one delivered a script worthy of it. San Jose controlled the game, but the guy who grew up in its academy had the final word.
