FC Dallas Beats Real Salt Lake 3-1 on the Counter as Sam Sarver Seals It
Santiago Moreno and Kaick scored early and Sam Sarver added a stoppage-time counter as FC Dallas beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 at Toyota Stadium despite 26.8 percent possession.

Real Salt Lake had the ball for almost three-quarters of the night in Frisco. FC Dallas had the goals, and in soccer that is still the only stat that pays the rent.
Santiago Moreno and Kaick scored six minutes apart in the first half, Sam Sarver put the game away in stoppage time, and FC Dallas beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium. Diego Luna pulled one back for RSL in the 85th minute, but Dallas answered on the counter seven minutes later, and Sarver celebrated so hard he earned a yellow card for it.
Six Minutes of Damage
The first 15 minutes were a feeling-out process: a couple of Dallas corners, a DeAndre Yedlin shot blocked from distance, very little else. Then RSL gave the ball away, according to the visitors' own recap, and Dallas made it count. In the 18th minute, Petar Musa found Moreno, and Moreno beat Rafael Cabral with a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. The AP said it was his first goal of the season.
Six minutes later Dallas broke again. Musa's shot from the right side of the box was saved by Cabral, and Kaick buried the rebound from the center of the box to make it 2-0 on a fast break. RSL's recap described both goals as coming against the run of play, which tells you how the rest of the half went. The visitors strung together five corners between the 30th and 38th minutes and kept knocking on the door, but Sergi Solans' header in the 42nd went wide, and Musa nearly made it 3-0 with a header of his own in the 44th.
RSL went into halftime down 2-0. The club said it was the first time all season it had trailed at the break, making it the last of the league's 30 teams to do so in 2026.
RSL Pushes, Dallas Bends
The second half was a long exercise in Dallas absorbing pressure. RSL finished with 73.2 percent possession and attempted 657 passes to Dallas' 242. Michael Collodi saved a Morgan Guilavogui shot from distance in the 60th minute, and Samuel Junqua and Noel Caliskan both fired over from outside the box. Pablo Mastroeni went to his bench early, sending on Victor Olatunji in the 58th and Aiden Hezarkhani and Alexandros Katranis in the 68th.
Dallas kept threatening on the other end. Musa headed just over from very close range in the 61st minute, and Osaze Urhoghide did the same off a corner in the 73rd.
RSL finally broke through in the 85th minute. Katranis switched play to Guilavogui, Guilavogui fed Luna in the middle of the box, and Luna curled a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. For about seven minutes, Toyota Stadium got nervous.
Then RSL earned a corner in the second minute of stoppage time, and the ball came back the other way. Sebastien Ibeagha, on for barely four minutes, set up Sarver on the fast break, and the substitute finished from the center of the box into the bottom left corner. RSL's recap described him sprinting past several defenders before shooting from 12 yards. A minute later, he was booked for excessive celebration. Worth it.
Players Who Shaped It
Petar Musa did a little of everything: an assist on the opener, the shot that led to the second goal and four attempts in all before coming off in the 76th minute.
Santiago Moreno scored with his only shot. The AP said it was the 21st goal of his career in 138 appearances.
Kaick scored the second, his third goal in 39 career matches according to the AP, which noted he is 20 years old.
Sam Sarver came on in the 76th minute and needed one shot to seal it. The AP said it was his second goal of the season and of his career, in his 13th appearance.
For RSL, Diego Luna scored his fourth goal in his last six matches, according to the club, which described him as a U.S. World Cup hopeful. RSL said it was his 26th goal in 102 career MLS matches for the club, putting him alone in 10th place on its all-time scoring list. It was also, per the club, RSL's first loss of 2026 in a game where Luna scored.
How Dallas Won Without the Ball
This was a masterclass in doing more with less. Dallas completed only 178 passes, but it cleared the ball 46 times, won 14 of its 20 tackles and turned two of its handful of transitions into goals. RSL's own coverage admitted Dallas was happy to cede the ball while shutting off the space behind its back line. The visitors attempted 24 crosses and completed two. When a defense keeps the opponent in front of it and counters this sharply, possession becomes a vanity metric.
Stats That Mattered
- Possession: RSL 73.2 percent, Dallas 26.8 percent.
- Passes: RSL completed 580 of 657; Dallas completed 178 of 242.
- Shots: Dallas 11 (4 on target), RSL 9 (2 on target).
- Clearances: Dallas 46, RSL 10.
- Crosses: RSL completed 2 of 24.
Where They Stand
FC Dallas improves to 5-4-3 with 19 points and has won two straight after a four-match winless run, according to the AP. RSL's recap listed Dallas seventh in the West after the result. Dallas hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday.
Real Salt Lake falls to 6-1-4 with 19 points, sixth in the West per its club, and has lost three of its last four. The AP noted RSL has not won in Frisco since a 3-0 victory on July 13, 2013. The club said it will try to avoid back-to-back losses for what would be the 20th time in the 195-game Pablo Mastroeni era when it hosts the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, before the Colorado Rapids visit on Saturday.
The Closer
There is a version of this match in an alternate universe where RSL's possession turns into three points. In this one, Dallas played like the poker player who folds hand after hand, waits for the two good ones and takes the whole pot. Sarver's celebration, yellow card and all, was just the end credits.
