Petar Musa's Stoppage-Time Penalty Caps FC Dallas' 4-3 Comeback Over Sporting KC

Petar Musa scored twice, including a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time, as FC Dallas rallied from 2-0 down to beat Sporting Kansas City 4-3 at Toyota Stadium.

Sporting Kansas City led 2-0 after 19 minutes. Sporting outshot FC Dallas 26-14. Sporting put 10 shots on target. And Sporting still went home with zero points, because Petar Musa had the last word from the penalty spot in the 97th minute.

Musa converted a stoppage-time penalty, his second goal of the night, as FC Dallas came from two goals down to beat Sporting KC 4-3 on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium. Taylor Calheira scored the first two MLS goals of his career for Sporting, including a 78th-minute equalizer, but a VAR-backed penalty call against Moisés Mosquera decided a game that had no business being decided by anything so small.

Sporting Starts Fast, Then Hits the Wall

For 20 minutes, this looked like a road masterclass. In the fourth minute, Capita drove at the Dallas defense, Jonathan Sirois saved his shot, and Calheira pounced on the rebound, lashing a left-footed finish into the top left corner. Sirois had to stop André Luiz from distance and Justin Reynolds from the right side of the box in the eighth minute, then denied Calheira from point-blank range in the 12th.

The second goal came in the 19th minute. Stephen Afrifa scored from just outside the box, and Sporting's account says his press on Dallas captain Ramiro produced it, with Ramiro's attempted pass deflecting off Afrifa and in. Afrifa nearly made it three in the 22nd, dragging a left-footed shot just wide.

Then the whole thing flipped. Dallas did not register a shot until the 27th minute, and it went in: Musa set up Logan Farrington, who finished low from the center of the box. Three minutes later, Musa headed Bernard Kamungo's cross into the bottom left corner to tie it. And right before halftime, in the 45th minute, Kaick ripped a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, with Farrington providing the assist. Three goals in 18 minutes. From 2-0 down to 3-2 up.

Stefan Cleveland kept the margin at one with stops on Kamungo and Musa in first-half stoppage time. Sporting's recap adds that a penalty appeal for a challenge by Nolan Norris on André Luiz just before the break was checked by VAR and not given.

The Second-Half Siege

Sporting owned the second half. Sirois saved from André Luiz again in the 52nd minute, Shapi Suleymanov came on for the Designated Player in the 58th and blazed over in the 63rd, and Sirois stopped Afrifa from the center of the box in the 65th. Calheira had two shots blocked in the 72nd and 73rd minutes. The pressure was relentless and, for a while, fruitless.

It finally paid off in the 78th minute. Emir Karic delivered a cross and Calheira, pretty free by his own account, headed it into the bottom left corner. 3-3. Sporting's recap credits Karic and Kwaku Agyabeng with assists, their first for the club; ESPN lists Karic.

Karic then went off injured in the 85th minute. Sirois saved from Capita in the 86th, Cleveland stopped substitute Sam Sarver in the 89th, and Musa fired high and wide in the 90th. Eight minutes of added time were announced, and in the first of them, Musa went down under Mosquera's challenge in the box. VAR upheld the call in the 93rd minute. Four minutes later, Musa drove a right-footed penalty into the top right corner.

Musa, Calheira and a Busy Goalkeeper

Petar Musa finished with two goals and an assist on four shots, three of them on target. Sporting's recap notes the penalty was his MLS-leading 18th goal of the season. He was caught offside twice and was decisive three times.

Taylor Calheira was brilliant in defeat. Six shots, three on target, two goals, and a postgame reaction that sounded like a striker who already knows the job is not finished.

"I am super grateful to get my first MLS goals," Calheira said. "I am proud of that, but not proud of the result."

Jonathan Sirois made seven saves, four of them inside the first 12 minutes, which kept Sporting's early lead from getting out of hand.

Logan Farrington scored once and set up another, and Kaick scored with his only shot of the night. Efficiency, thy name is FC Dallas.

The Spell That Cost Sporting

The penalty decided the match, and Sporting head coach Raphael Wicky was not thrilled with how long it took to get there.

"You have to take five or six minutes to define if it's actually a foul inside the box," Wicky said. "It's 3-3 in minute 90 and the game is open and both teams are playing to win. And then you make it about the decision which you're not even sure. I think that is sad."

But Wicky also pointed at the real damage. "We conceded three goals before without the referee's fault, to be honest," he said, adding that his side "started dropping when we were 2-0 up and then we conceded." That 18-minute collapse before halftime is the story underneath the controversy.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Sporting 26, Dallas 14. On target: Sporting 10, Dallas 9.
  • Saves: Sirois 7, Cleveland 5.
  • Possession: Sporting 56.3 percent, Dallas 43.7 percent.
  • Tackles: Dallas attempted 27 to Sporting's 10, winning 15.
  • Corners: Sporting 7, Dallas 3.

Where It Leaves Them

Dallas moved to 10-7-6 with 37 points. Days after a 3-3 draw at St. Louis CITY SC, this was another wild one, but this time the Texans kept the points. Wicky had already offered the scouting report: "They're not just randomly up where they are in the standings."

Sporting fell to 4-3-16 with 15 points. Coming off a 3-0 home loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps, this felt like a better performance with the same result. There were positives, including Calheira's breakthrough, André Luiz's first start since his club-record transfer from Olympiacos, and an 18-year-old striker, Seymour Reid, who by Wicky's account arrived only the day before and still looked dangerous off the bench. Sporting hosts LAFC next Saturday.

A Nolan Ending

This match played out like a Christopher Nolan movie: a thrilling first act, a timeline that kept flipping, and an ending everyone will argue about for a week. Sporting did almost everything right except the part that mattered most, which was holding a two-goal lead. Musa did the one thing that mattered, and Dallas walked off with the box office receipts.
