Hannes Wolf's First MLS Hat Trick Lifts NYCFC Past Columbus Crew 3-0
Hannes Wolf scored his first MLS hat trick as New York City FC beat the Columbus Crew 3-0 at Yankee Stadium to end a seven-match winless run.

Seven matches without a win will make any locker room start checking its horoscope. New York City FC did not need the stars to align on Sunday. It needed Hannes Wolf, and Wolf delivered three times.
The Austrian scored twice in four first-half minutes and completed the job in the 66th as NYCFC beat the Columbus Crew 3-0 at Yankee Stadium. It was Wolf's first MLS hat trick, according to MLSsoccer.com, and it ended a seven-match winless run that stretched back to a 3-1 home win over the Colorado Rapids on March 14.
Four Minutes That Flipped the Afternoon
NYCFC sent a warning before most of the 17,770 fans had settled in. In the opening minute, Maxi Moralez met an Agustín Ojeda cross with a header from the left side of the six-yard box, and Patrick Schulte had to save it near the top left corner.
Columbus did not take the hint. In the 12th minute, Ojeda set up Wolf in the middle of the box and Wolf's right-footed finish went into the bottom left corner. Four minutes later, Nicolás Fernández found him on the left side of the six-yard box, and Wolf drove a left-footed shot straight down the middle. Right foot, left foot, 2-0, and the Crew were chasing the game after 16 minutes.
Columbus finished with 58.4 percent possession and completed 545 passes to NYCFC's 368. What they lacked was teeth. André Gomes sent a long-range effort wide in the 22nd minute, Diego Rossi forced Matt Freese into a save from the middle of the box in the 43rd, and a Dylan Chambost shot was blocked a minute later. NYCFC took its two-goal cushion into the break.
The Crew Push, and the Door Slams
The second half opened like a siege. Between the 49th and 55th minutes, Gomes, Rossi, Chambost and Taha Habroune all had shots blocked from the center of the box, and in the 56th Max Arfsten pulled one just wide to the right. Corners kept coming. Columbus earned eight on the day to NYCFC's three.
Then came the moment that decided whether this would be a nervy finish or a stroll. In the 61st minute, Rudy Camacho rose to meet a Rossi cross, and Freese saved his header at the top of the goal. Two minutes later Habroune was booked for a bad foul. Three minutes after that, it was over.
Fernández picked out Wolf again in the 66th, and Wolf's right-footed shot from the center of the box went into the bottom right corner for 3-0. Henrik Rydström answered with a triple change in the 68th, sending on Sékou Bangoura, Dániel Gazdag and Mohamed Farsi, but the Crew never really threatened again. Farsi's shot from distance in the 84th sailed over, and Schulte's final save came in stoppage time against substitute Malachi Jones.
Wolf, Fernández and the Clean Sheet Crew
Hannes Wolf had the kind of afternoon that makes fantasy managers weep with joy: three shots, three on target, three goals. MLSsoccer.com named him Player of the Matchday for Matchday 12, the first time he has won the award, and noted the hat trick was the eighth MLS hat trick in club history and the first since Alonso Martínez on July 25, 2025.
Nicolás Fernández was the supply line, with assists on the second and third goals in ESPN's match data. The AP credited Fernández with an assist on all three, but ESPN gives the first to Agustín Ojeda, who also managed to get caught offside three times. Busy afternoon.
Matt Freese did not have to do much, but he did it when it mattered. Two saves, including the Camacho header, earned him what the AP called his second clean sheet of the campaign in 12 starts. The AP added that Freese now has 22 shutouts in 100 career starts.
For Columbus, Patrick Schulte made three saves, including the early stop on Moralez. Diego Rossi led the visitors with three shots, but only one found the target.
The Save Before the Dagger
If the 12th and 16th minutes built the lead, the 61st protected it. Columbus had spent the opening stretch of the second half piling bodies into the box, and Camacho's header was arguably the best look they had all day. Freese kept it out, and five minutes later Wolf turned a 2-0 grind into a 3-0 rout.
"We were close to scoring the first goal in the second half, but we didn't do it," Rydström told the club's website. His bigger frustration was the familiar feel of it all. "For me it looked a little bit like in the beginning of the season," he said, adding, "The last six games, we have been good to erase those kind of behaviors."
Stats That Mattered
- Shots on target: NYCFC 6 of 9, Columbus 2 of 11.
- Possession: Columbus 58.4 percent, NYCFC 41.6 percent.
- Blocked shots: five Columbus attempts were blocked, compared with one for NYCFC.
- Passing: Columbus completed 545 of 609 passes; NYCFC completed 368 of 437.
- Offside: NYCFC was flagged six times and still scored three.
Relief in New York, Frustration in Columbus
NYCFC improves to 4-3-5 with 15 points, and the win came with a shorthanded roster. The AP reported that Martínez was one of seven NYCFC players who missed the match with leg injuries. The schedule offers no breather: according to MLSsoccer.com, Wolf and company head to Charlotte FC on Wednesday before the next Hudson River Derby against Red Bull New York on Saturday.
Columbus falls to 3-3-6 with 12 points after a second straight defeat, following a 3-2 home loss to Minnesota United FC on May 2. The road has been unkind all season: the Crew have one win, one draw and four losses away from home. The AP noted Columbus still leads the all-time series 11-10-8.
Captain Sean Zawadzki kept it simple. "You prepare for it, and you think you got a good plan going into it, and then you're not good enough on the day sometimes," he said. Columbus visits Red Bull New York on Wednesday, then, according to the club, hosts NYCFC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals the following Wednesday at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field. A rematch arrives fast.
Hungry Like the Wolf
Duran Duran called it decades ago. NYCFC came into Sunday starving for three points, and Wolf answered with a performance that was efficient to the point of rudeness: three shots, three goals, zero wasted motion. For now, the only word that fits is the one Rydström chose himself. "This was a disappointment for sure."
