Sixteen minutes into New York City FC's home opener, Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau handled the ball outside his area and saw red. Orlando City SC spent the next 74 minutes finding out exactly how long an afternoon in the Bronx can feel.

New York City FC beat Orlando City SC 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, in front of 25,055 fans. Agustín Ojeda, Nicolás Fernández and Maxi Moralez scored before halftime, and Keaton Parks added two more after the break. NYCFC moved to 2-1-0 with seven points, while Orlando dropped to 0-0-3 with zero points.

The Red Card That Broke the Game

NYCFC had already been knocking. Fernández fired high and wide in the 3rd minute, Parks and Hannes Wolf both missed the target in the 12th, and Moralez put a good look over the bar in the 14th. Then came the moment that flipped the whole script. Both clubs said Crépeau was sent off for handling outside the box, and Orlando head coach Oscar Pareja pulled Tyrese Spicer in the 19th minute so backup goalkeeper Javier Otero could come on. Orlando said it was Otero's first appearance of the 2026 season.

NYCFC's recap pointed out that it was the third straight match in which their opponent had been reduced to 10 men, and the ESPN data backs that up: LA Galaxy's Emiro Garcés and Philadelphia's Olwethu Makhanya were both sent off in the previous two games. At this point, opponents might want to bring an extra player just in case.

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute. Moralez delivered the ball after a corner and Ojeda hammered a right-footed finish into the top left corner from the center of the box. According to NYCFC, the assist was Moralez's 100th for the club, and in a ballpark, triple digits feel about right.

Tayvon Gray almost added a second with a curler from distance in the 28th minute that flew just past the top corner. The goal arrived in the 42nd instead, with Moralez whipping in a cross and Fernández heading it into the bottom left corner. The fourth official added 11 minutes to the first half, and NYCFC used them. Fernández was fouled in the box by Luis Otávio, who was making his club debut according to Orlando, and Moralez rolled the penalty into the bottom left corner in the seventh minute of added time. It was 3-0 at the break.

Parks Turns It Into a Rout

Pareja made a double change at halftime, sending on Duncan McGuire and Adrián Marín. It did not slow anything down. In the 49th minute Gray slid a low cross into the box and Parks poked it home from close range, through Otero's legs per NYCFC. Five minutes later Parks struck again, this time with his left foot into the bottom right corner after picking off a poor clearance. Five goals, 54 minutes, one very tired backup goalkeeper.

McGuire gave the visitors a rare moment with a header in the 51st minute that Matt Freese saved, and he had another effort blocked in the 57th. Griffin Dorsey fired high and wide a minute later, and that was about it for Orlando's attack.

Pascal Jansen started emptying his bench after the hour. Moralez came off in the 62nd minute for Talles Magno and, per NYCFC, got a standing ovation. Magno thought he had a sixth, but the flag went up for offside. The fourth official signaled zero minutes of added time at the end, which felt like a mercy rule in all but name.

The Stars in the Bronx

Maxi Moralez was the conductor of this orchestra: one goal, two assists and three shots in 62 minutes, plus the 100th assist milestone for the club.

Keaton Parks scored twice on three shots, with two on target. NYCFC said the first was his first goal of the season, so he went from zero to a brace in five minutes.

Nicolás Fernández scored with his header and drew the penalty for the third goal.

Tayvon Gray set up the fourth goal and nearly scored a beauty of his own.

Agustín Ojeda scored with his only shot before going off in the 71st minute.

For Orlando, Duncan McGuire was the lone bright spot off the bench with two shots, one on target.

The Turning Point

The 16th minute, and it is not close. A scoreless match against a team that had lost its first two games turned into a five-goal blowout once Orlando lost its starting goalkeeper. Pareja did not hide behind it, though. "That was such a bad performance from our end. I take full responsibility, sincerely," he said.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: NYCFC had 71.5 percent of the ball.
  • Passing: NYCFC completed 618 of 677 passes. Orlando completed 195 of 271.
  • Shots: NYCFC 13, Orlando 4. NYCFC put 5 on target and scored all 5.
  • Saves: Freese made 1. Orlando made none.
  • Offsides: NYCFC were flagged 5 times, the only blemish on a near-perfect day.

What It Means

NYCFC are 2-1-0 and unbeaten after a 1-1 draw at the LA Galaxy and a 2-1 win at Philadelphia. Jansen made just one change from that Union game, bringing Kai Trewin back into the lineup, and the result was the kind of home opener that gets fans planning their next trip to the Bronx. NYCFC host the Colorado Rapids on March 14.

Orlando are 0-0-3 and have conceded 11 goals in three matches, after losses of 2-1 to Red Bull New York and 4-2 to Inter Miami CF at home. The red card made this one ugly, but Pareja said the team's tactical response was the bigger problem. "I think our response should have been better, especially from the tactical side," he said. The Lions host CF Montréal on March 14.

The Last Word

Pareja also said the result "is really something that doesn't represent us," and the first two weeks suggest Orlando are better than a five-goal loss. But in the Bronx, nobody grades on a curve. NYCFC played this one like a Yankees lineup facing a position player on the mound, and they did not miss many pitches.
