Subaru Park was on its feet. Indiana Vassilev had just buried an 89th-minute penalty, the Philadelphia Union had a point in their home opener, and 10 minutes of stoppage time stretched out in front of everybody. Then Olwethu Makhanya got sent off, and Tayvon Gray turned the whole afternoon upside down.

New York City FC beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Sunday at Subaru Park, in front of 18,513 fans. Hannes Wolf scored in the 36th minute, Vassilev equalized from the spot, and Gray headed in the winner nine minutes into stoppage time. NYCFC improved to 1-1-0 with four points. The Union dropped to 0-0-2 with zero points.

Blake Against the Blue Wave

Philadelphia came out with energy. Danley Jean Jacques fired just wide from distance in the 11th minute and missed again in the 16th, Milan Iloski fired high and wide in the 19th, and Nathan Harriel had a header blocked in the 21st. Both teams picked up early yellows, with Gray booked in the 20th minute and Makhanya in the 23rd. Makhanya's early caution would matter much later.

NYCFC nearly struck first in the 26th minute. Keaton Parks slipped Agustín Ojeda through, and the AP said Ojeda cut back past Frankie Westfield before his shot from the center of the box rattled the right post. Andre Blake then had to save a Kevin O'Toole header in the 29th minute, and NYCFC kept coming.

The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute. Nicolás Fernández got a shot away from the left side of the box, Blake made the save, and Wolf hammered in the rebound. NYCFC's recap said seven different players were involved in the move. The AP noted Wolf scored a career-high 11 goals in 2025, and this was his first of the new season. Blake saved from Gray in the 44th minute, and Iloski fired just wide right before the break. NYCFC led 1-0 at halftime.

Philly Pushes, Freese Answers

The second half became a showdown between Philadelphia's pressure and Matt Freese's gloves. The Union recap pointed out that Freese is a former Union Homegrown, which added a little extra spice every time he made a stop. He saved from Augustín Anello in the 54th minute and from substitute Stas Korzeniowski in the 60th.

Philadelphia thought they should have had a penalty in the 67th minute, but VAR backed the decision not to award one. Korzeniowski then headed a Jovan Lukic corner off the right post in the 75th minute, and Freese made his best save of the day in the 81st, stopping a Harriel shot after a Ben Bender cross. Harriel had another effort blocked in the 85th minute and then fired high.

The pressure finally paid off. In the 86th minute, Korzeniowski was fouled in the box by Thiago Martins, and Vassilev stepped up three minutes later and drilled his left-footed penalty down the middle. It was Philadelphia's first league goal of the season, after a 1-0 loss at D.C. United in the opener.

Ten Minutes of Chaos

The fourth official put up 10 minutes of stoppage time. Two minutes into it, Makhanya picked up his second yellow card and was sent off. Blake kept his side level with saves on a Raul Gustavo header in the 93rd minute and an Ojeda shot in the 97th. Then, with time nearly up, Ojeda lofted a cross from the left side of the box to the back post, per the AP, and Gray headed it in from close range. NYCFC said the goal sent their traveling fans into delirium.

Who Showed Up

Andre Blake made eight saves and kept the Union in it for most of the afternoon. That is a lot of work for a goalkeeper in a home opener.

Tayvon Gray scored the winner and put both of his shots on target. He also helped keep the Union out at the other end, with NYCFC saying he cleared a Harriel shot off the line.

Hannes Wolf got his season started with the opener.

Agustín Ojeda hit the post, created the winner and took two shots.

Nathan Harriel led the Union with five shots, two on target.

Matt Freese made three saves, and the 81st-minute stop on Harriel kept NYCFC ahead.

The Turning Point

Makhanya's second yellow card in the 92nd minute. The Union had all the momentum after Vassilev's penalty, and the crowd was fully back in it. Losing a center back with most of the stoppage time still to play changed the math entirely. NYCFC kept coming, Blake made two more saves, and the visitors finally broke through in the 99th minute.

Stats That Matter

  • Saves: Blake 8, Freese 3.
  • Shots on target: NYCFC put 9 on goal, Philadelphia 5.
  • Total shots: Philadelphia took 16, NYCFC 13.
  • Clearances: NYCFC made 37, the Union 15.
  • Crosses: Philadelphia sent in 24 but completed only 5.

What It Means

NYCFC are 1-1-0 after opening with a 1-1 draw at the LA Galaxy. Pascal Jansen made one change from that game, bringing Parks into the lineup, and the visitors earned a road win against a rival. NYCFC host Orlando City SC at Yankee Stadium on March 7.

For Philadelphia, a home opener that started with promise ended in frustration. The Union handed first Subaru Park starts to new signings Japhet Sery and Augustín Anello, and Lukic made his 2026 MLS debut after returning from injury, according to the club. The AP pointed out that this is the team that won the 2025 Supporters' Shield, which makes an 0-0-2 start look even stranger. The Union host the San Jose Earthquakes on March 7.

The Last Word

Some games end. This one got a twist ending worthy of a streaming series finale. Philadelphia did almost everything right in the final 10 minutes of regulation, then lost a man and lost the game in the space of seven minutes. New York City FC will happily take the drama.
