Iván Angulo had scored in four straight MLS matches. In the 89th minute on Saturday night, with the Columbus Crew pouring forward, he made it five. Angulo carried a counter up the field, pushed the ball wide to Martín Ojeda, took the return and rolled a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner.

That goal gave Orlando City SC a 3-2 win over the Crew at Inter&Co Stadium, and it rescued a night that was drifting away. Columbus outshot Orlando 27-20 and put 15 attempts on target. The only reason the visitors flew home empty-handed was Maxime Crépeau, who made 12 saves, an Orlando City single-match record according to the club.

Forty-Six Seconds to Liftoff

Interim head coach Martín Perelman wanted a fast start, and his team took the request literally. Harvey Sarajian, making his first MLS start, finished a pass from Antoine Griezmann from the middle of the box 46 seconds in, per the AP. Orlando said it was the third-fastest goal in club history.

Sarajian explained the plan afterward. "We wanted to start off fast. The whole pregame talk was energy, energy, energy and start fast because we've had some slow starts."

The lead lasted six minutes. In the seventh, Santiago Rodríguez threaded a pass through what Columbus counted as four Orlando defenders, and Taha Habroune ran onto it and beat Crépeau, who had come charging off his line.

Orlando went back in front in the 16th minute. Angulo drew a foul from Rodríguez on the right wing, and Griezmann curled a left-footed free kick into the top left corner. Orlando said it was his 10th goal across all competitions since he arrived over the summer, which is a very 2018 World Cup winner thing to do.

Then the first half became a shooting gallery. Crépeau denied Josef Martínez and a Rodríguez header in the 19th minute and Brais Méndez in the 29th. Patrick Schulte answered with saves on Sarajian in the 33rd and Ojeda a minute later. Martínez headed just over in the 40th, and Orlando reached the break up 2-1.

Columbus Come Out Swinging

Bernardo Rhein replaced Sarajian at halftime, and the Crew came out pinning Orlando deep. Crépeau stopped Méndez from distance in the 48th minute, then turned away Dylan Chambost and Anass Zaroury in the 50th.

Orlando nearly broke the game open in the 52nd minute when Marco Pasalic rattled the bar from outside the box. A minute later, Columbus made them pay. Habroune slid a through ball to Méndez, who pulled Crépeau off his line and finished from the left side of the six-yard box in the 53rd minute to make it 2-2.

From there, the Crew had the better of it. They won three corners between the 73rd and 75th minutes, substitute Gonzalo Tapia tested Crépeau in the 76th, and Tapia then smacked the left post from outside the box in the 82nd. Schulte stopped Ojeda in the 85th and a Daryl Dike header in the 86th.

The Turning Point

The decisive sequence took about a minute. In the 89th, Rodríguez slipped Tapia through, and Crépeau made the save from the center of the box. Orlando broke the other way, Angulo and Ojeda played their give-and-go, and the Lions were ahead for good.

That is the cruelty of this sport in one swing: Columbus were one save away from a 3-2 lead and ended up chasing a 3-2 deficit. Crépeau still had one more stop in him, on André Gomes from distance in stoppage time.

The Wall, the Streak and the Frenchman

Maxime Crépeau was the headliner. Twelve saves topped the club's previous single-match mark of 11, which Mason Stajduhar set and Crépeau himself matched in the season opener against Red Bull New York, per Orlando. "Very happy with the three points. We know how crucial the points are from now until the end of the year," he said.

Iván Angulo has now scored in five consecutive MLS matches, which Orlando said ties Griezmann for the longest scoring streak in club history within a single season. The club also credited him with a secondary assist on the opener, his club-leading 12th of 2026 across all competitions. ESPN's lineup had him at right back. He played like a winger who forgot to tell anyone.

Antoine Griezmann finished with a goal and an assist. The 35-year-old now has nine goals and five assists in 12 MLS appearances, per the AP, and Orlando said he has a goal contribution in eight straight league matches.

For Columbus, Taha Habroune scored one and set up the other, and interim head coach Laurent Courtois raved about him. "Beside the goal and the assist, I felt that was maybe the best performance he's had," Courtois said, according to the Crew. Brais Méndez put four of his six shots on target, and Columbus said the goal was his fourth in league play.

Stats That Matter

  • Saves: Crépeau made 12. Schulte made five.
  • Shots on target: Columbus 15, Orlando eight.
  • Corners: The Crew won 11 to Orlando's two.
  • Possession: Columbus held 52.6 percent of the ball.
  • Offsides: Columbus were flagged five times to Orlando's one.

What It Means

Orlando City improve to 11-4-13 (wins, draws, losses) with 37 points and end a two-game skid that came via back-to-back 4-2 losses at New England and Philadelphia. Ojeda's assist was his 45th all-time for the club, per Orlando, leaving him two shy of tying Mauricio Pereyra for the club's all-time lead across all competitions. Next up is a Wednesday trip to Toronto.

Columbus drop to 8-5-15 with 29 points, and the two-game winning run they carried into the night is over. The Crew host Charlotte on Wednesday, the start of a stretch the club says includes six games in 21 days, and they face St. Louis CITY SC in the U.S. Open Cup final on Oct. 21. The teams drew 1-1 in Columbus back in April.

Courtois saw the positives. "We certainly arrived a lot of times in front of Orlando's goal," he said. "We couldn't convert the way we wanted. Crépeau had a great game."

The Closing Take

Columbus did nearly everything right except beat the one man standing between the posts. Courtois put it plainly: "It sucks because coming in that environment and producing what they've produced and getting out with zero points is really tough."

Orlando got a record night from its goalkeeper and another late flourish from a player who suddenly cannot stop scoring. Somewhere, a fantasy manager who benched Angulo is staring at the ceiling.
