Stijn Spierings had been a Real Salt Lake player in an MLS match for seven minutes. That was all the time he needed to become the answer to a trivia question.

The Dutch midfielder came off the bench in the 81st minute on Saturday night and buried a right-footed shot from outside the box in the 88th, giving Real Salt Lake a 2-1 win over Austin FC at America First Field. The club said that seven-minute span was the quickest for a debutant in RSL's 22-year history, and the goal pushed Pablo Mastroeni's side to 3-0-1 with a third straight win.

Austin Lands the First Punch

Mastroeni made just one change from the 3-2 win at Atlanta the previous weekend, bringing Dillon into the lineup, according to the club. RSL pressed early in front of 20,751 fans, but Austin struck first off a dead ball. In the 18th minute, Facundo Torres whipped in a set-piece cross and Jon Bell headed it from the center of the box into the bottom left corner, slipping it just inside the far post past Rafael Cabral. 1-0 Austin.

The lead lasted six minutes. In the 24th, Noel Caliskan sent a dangerous ball into the box, per the club, and Oleksandr Svatok, under pressure, put it into his own net. 1-1, and the game turned into a siege.

Brad Stuver got busy fast. He saved Griffin Dillon from distance in the 26th, Aiden Hezarkhani from the middle of the box in the 31st and Zavier Gozo in the 37th. Austin had its own flurry before the break, when Cabral stopped Myrto Uzuni and then Torres in the 43rd minute. Right before halftime, Stuver clawed away a Morgan Guilavogui header from the left side of the six-yard box after a Gozo cross.

Stuver Against the World

The second half was largely RSL pushing and Stuver saying no. Lukas Engel headed wide in the 48th, Hezarkhani sent a free kick just past the top left corner in the 52nd, and Stuver saved from Guilavogui in the 55th before denying Sergi Solans twice in the 57th.

Austin's best response came in the 62nd minute. Joseph Rosales had already fired over from distance a minute earlier, and this time he hit the right post from the left side of the box after another Torres pass. Jorge Alastuey and Ilie Sánchez also tried their luck in that same minute. That was the moment the visitors could have stolen it.

Injuries shaped the closing stretch. Nicolás Dubersarsky came off for Austin in the 70th minute because of an injury, and RSL's Dillon followed in the 81st for the same reason. Mastroeni had already sent on Diego Luna and Victor Olatunji in the 71st, both making their 2026 debuts, according to the club. Then he turned to Spierings.

The Turning Point: Seven Minutes, Four Touches

The club said Spierings had touched the ball just four times when Justen Glad found him roughly 25 yards out in the 88th minute. He took a touch, turned and fired without looking up, and the shot flew into the bottom left corner beyond Stuver. 2-1.

It was his first MLS goal, and the club noted it was his first in North America, coming in his RSL and MLS debut at home. RSL said he became the sixth player in club history to score in his MLS debut for the team, and that the seven minutes between his entrance and his goal were the quickest span for a debutant in the club's 22 seasons. For comparison, the club pointed to former RSL striker Cristian Arango, who scored 23 minutes into his first match in 2023.

Austin had five minutes of added time to answer and did not manage another shot, per ESPN's play-by-play. Sánchez picked up Austin's fourth yellow card in stoppage time, a decent summary of how the night ended for the visitors.

Star Watch

Spierings is the obvious headline, but this was a collective grind. Guilavogui had four shots, two of them on target. Gozo had three attempts and set up Guilavogui's late first-half header. Glad, starting for the fourth straight week, picked up the assist on the winner.

The club also noted that four academy products started: Glad, Dillon and the 18-year-olds Gozo and Hezarkhani. Dillon, a Utah native, was making his first home MLS appearance.

On the other side, Stuver was outstanding. His seven saves kept Austin level until the 88th minute. Bell scored on his only shot, and Torres set up the opener and created both of Rosales' chances around the hour mark.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: RSL 23, Austin 10. RSL put 8 on target; Austin managed 3.
  • Saves: Stuver 7, Cabral 2.
  • Possession: RSL 60.4 percent, Austin 39.6 percent.
  • Passing: RSL completed 443 of 511 passes; Austin completed 264 of 332.
  • Discipline: Austin collected four yellow cards to RSL's one.

What It Means

Real Salt Lake is 3-0-1 with 9 points after a season-opening 1-0 loss at Vancouver, followed by wins over Seattle, at Atlanta and now Austin. The club said this is RSL's first three-game winning streak since last July, and it noted that only one of the team's 13 wins a year ago came from behind. RSL has also won five of its last six home games against Austin, according to the club.

Next up is a trip to San Diego FC next Sunday. If RSL wins that one, the club said it would be its first four-game winning streak since the 2013 season.

Austin falls to 1-1-2 with 4 points and has lost back-to-back road games, at Charlotte FC and now in Sandy, after starting the season with a draw against Minnesota and a home win over D.C. United.

Closing Take

Some players need a few weeks to settle into a new league. Spierings needed four touches and seven minutes. It is the soccer equivalent of the new guy at work fixing the printer on his first morning: nobody knows his name yet, but everyone in the building is suddenly a fan. With Luna and Olatunji back and the academy kids carrying the load, RSL looks like a team building something.
