Fernández Mercau Stunner Ends NYCFC's Seven-Match Winless Run in 2-0 Win at Real Salt Lake
Nicolás Fernández Mercau and Luighi scored and Matt Freese made six saves as New York City FC won 2-0 at Real Salt Lake, extending RSL's MLS winless streak to 11.

For 20 minutes, Real Salt Lake threw everything it had at Matt Freese. Then New York City FC ran one clever free-kick routine at the other end, and the whole night tilted.
Nicolás Fernández Mercau curled a 41st-minute left-footer into the top left corner, Luighi doubled the lead off an Agustín Ojeda cutback in the 61st, and New York City FC beat Real Salt Lake 2-0 on Saturday night at America First Field. The win ended NYCFC's seven-match winless run in league play. For the hosts, the drought only got longer: RSL's MLS winless streak reached 11 matches, and the club's last league win came on May 16.
Freese Builds a Wall, Then Fernández Mercau Paints on It
RSL came out like a team that knew exactly how badly it needed this one, roared on by a crowd of 20,293 that the club counted as its 16th straight home sellout. Saba Lobjanidze had a shot blocked in the eighth minute. In the 16th, Freese produced the save sequence of the night, getting down to Luca Moisa's low drive from outside the box and then springing back up to stop Lobjanidze from the left side of the six-yard box. Juan Jose Arias headed the ensuing corner just over. Freese then turned away Morgan Guilavogui in the 19th minute and Lobjanidze again in the 20th, and Moisa and Noel Caliskan had efforts blocked soon after.
NYCFC's attack in that stretch amounted to a long-range miss from Fernández Mercau and a blocked Jonathan Shore shot. Before the opener, RSL had eight shots to NYCFC's two, and the visitors had not put a single attempt on target.
Then came the 41st minute. Andrés Perea drew a foul from Alexandros Katranis in the attacking half, Ojeda rolled the free kick short to Fernández Mercau, and the playmaker took one touch and bent a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top left corner. NYCFC's recap put the distance at 25 yards. Rafael Cabral never had a prayer. Fernández Mercau nearly did it again before halftime, forcing Cabral into a save from more than 35 yards.
RSL opened the second half with the ball and with purpose, and Freese had to parry a Juan Manuel Sanabria shot in the 53rd minute. Arias went off injured in the 57th, with Kobi Henry replacing him, and Colin Guske came on for Moisa. Four minutes later, NYCFC struck again. Tayvon Gray launched the move with a quick ball forward, Ojeda raced down the right, carried it toward the goal line and cut it back, and Luighi met it first time with a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner.
The rest was a siege, just not a productive one. Lobjanidze fired a shot just wide in the 67th. Utah native Taylor Booth made his MLS and RSL debut in the 76th minute, per the club. Aiden Hezarkhani forced one more save from Freese with an 87th-minute header and sent another over the bar a minute later. Eight minutes of stoppage time brought a flurry of corners, Lineker Rodrigues headed wide from close range, Booth had a shot blocked in the final seconds, and that was it.
The Keeper, the Playmaker and the Provider
Freese finished with six saves, four of them in the opening 20 minutes, and he earned a late yellow card in stoppage time for good measure. If NYCFC's defense was the bouncer at the door, Freese was the guy who checked every single ID.
Fernández Mercau was the difference-maker. Three shots, two on target, one goal that will live in highlight packages, and four fouls drawn as RSL tried to slow him down. Ojeda did not score but might have been the most important player on the field after Freese: ESPN credits him with both assists, the clever short free kick for the opener and the driving run and cutback for the second. RSL's own recap also credited Gray on the second goal.
Luighi made his one shot count before giving way to Bénie Traoré in the 72nd minute. He also committed five fouls, a reminder that his night was as much about grinding as finishing. For RSL, Lobjanidze was the most dangerous attacker with four shots, two on target, but Freese had an answer every time.
The Free Kick That Flipped the Script
RSL controlled the opening half hour and had nothing to show for it. That 41st-minute set piece changed the math completely. Instead of going into the locker room level and buzzing, RSL had to chase a team that suddenly had permission to sit deep and break. The hosts kept the ball, NYCFC kept the shape, and the second goal arrived precisely the way that game state invites.

A Snapped Skid and a Growing One
New York City FC moved to 8-8-9 with 32 points, and RSL's postgame recap listed NYCFC seventh in the Eastern Conference. Before Saturday, NYCFC's last league win was a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire on July 25, and the seven matches since then had produced four draws and three losses, the last a midweek 2-1 home defeat to New England. This was also NYCFC's first road win since a 2-1 result at Columbus on July 22.
Real Salt Lake dropped to 8-5-11 with 29 points, 11th in the West by the club's count. The club noted that its MLS home winless run is now four matches, its longest since the 2016/17 seasons, and that this was RSL's first home shutout loss since July 19, 2025. It does not get easier: the Vancouver Whitecaps visit America First Field next Saturday, Sept. 19.
Groundhog Day in Sandy
RSL is living its own version of Groundhog Day: wake up, create chances, outshoot the opponent, lose anyway, repeat. Fifteen shots and ten corners should be enough to get something out of most nights. On this one, they ran into a goalkeeper in the zone and a playmaker who needed one touch and one swing. NYCFC did not need to be better for 90 minutes. They needed Freese for 20 and Fernández Mercau for one.
