Real Salt Lake Stays Perfect at Home as Sergi Solans and Diego Luna Sink San Diego FC 4-2
Sergi Solans headed in two goals and Diego Luna scored and assisted as Real Salt Lake struck four times before halftime to beat San Diego FC 4-2 and stay 4-0-0 at home.

Some teams ease into a game. Real Salt Lake kicked the door off its hinges. Diego Luna scored before the fifth minute was out, Sergi Solans headed in a second barely two minutes later, and San Diego FC spent the rest of Saturday night at America First Field trying to find the light switch.
Real Salt Lake beat San Diego FC 4-2, scoring all four of its goals in a first half that head coach Pablo Mastroeni rated as probably the best he has seen since arriving. Solans scored twice, both headers, Luna had a goal and an assist, and RSL stayed perfect at home at 4-0-0.
Two Goals in a Blink
Luna's opener in the 4th minute came from pure pressure. According to RSL, he pounced on an attempted clearance from San Diego goalkeeper Duran Ferree and fired it straight back into the net, finishing from the right side of the six-yard box. Two minutes later, Luna turned provider, crossing for Solans to head home from very close range into the bottom left corner.
RSL said the last time it scored two goals in a span of two minutes was Sept. 19, 2014, against the Colorado Rapids. That is a long time between flurries. The crowd of 20,852, a ninth consecutive sellout according to RSL, barely had time to settle into its seats.
San Diego did respond. In the 14th minute, Lewis Morgan set up Marcus Ingvartsen, who rifled a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the top right corner to make it 2-1. For a while, it looked like a game again.
Solans Does It Again
Then RSL found a second gear. Morgan Guilavogui forced Ferree into a save in the 32nd minute and nearly scored a minute later, and in the 37th minute Zavier Gozo whipped in a cross that Solans headed into the bottom right corner for a 3-1 lead. RSL said it was the first brace of the rookie's professional career, with both goals coming off his head.
That goal restored the two-goal cushion, and RSL was not finished. In the 45th minute, Solans led a fast break and fed Guilavogui, who finished from the center of the box into the bottom right corner. RSL said it was Guilavogui's first MLS goal. Per the club, it was the first time RSL had gone into halftime with four goals since June 1, 2024, against Austin FC.
Mastroeni sounded like a man who had just watched the blueprint come to life. "It's probably the best half of football that I've seen in the time that I've been here," he said.
He did not stop there. "Just every phase. The way we pressed, the way we turned our defensive actions into transition moments and quality chances, the way we built from the back," Mastroeni added.
San Diego Pushes, Cabral Holds
San Diego head coach Mikey Varas made two changes at halftime, sending on Pedro Soma and Alex Mighten for Aníbal Godoy and Bryce Duke. In the 62nd minute, Anders Dreyer drew a foul from Justen Glad in the box, and after what RSL described as a VAR review, Dreyer converted the penalty with his left foot in the 66th minute to make it 4-2.
San Diego piled on the late pressure, and seven of its eight corners came after the 77th minute. RSL goalkeeper Rafael Cabral answered every time. He saved a Jeppe Tverskov header in the 87th minute, stopped Dreyer from a tight angle in the 88th and, deep in stoppage time, saved an Amahl Pellegrino shot from the left side of the six-yard box. RSL said that last one came off his face. Goalkeeping is a glamorous profession.
Headers, Assists and a First Goal
Solans was the headliner with two goals and an assist on five shots, four of them on target. Luna was nearly as decisive, with a goal, an assist and two shots, and RSL noted he has now scored early in back-to-back home matches after striking in the 4th minute against Sporting Kansas City.
Guilavogui put four shots toward goal, three on target, before a 51st-minute yellow card and an 82nd-minute exit. Gozo added an assist and three shots. Mastroeni's only lineup change, per RSL, brought DeAndre Yedlin into the XI for his home debut of the 2026 season, before he made way for Samuel Junqua in the 70th minute.
For San Diego, Dreyer converted his penalty and put two of his three shots on target, and Ingvartsen's finish was a genuine highlight. Ferree made five saves, and without them this could have gotten much uglier.
By the Numbers in Sandy
- Shots on target: RSL 9, San Diego 5.
- Total shots: RSL 15, San Diego 9.
- Possession: San Diego 52.2 percent, RSL 47.8 percent.
- Corners: San Diego 8, RSL 1.
- Saves: Ferree 5, Cabral 3.
Perfect at Home for RSL, Trouble for San Diego
Real Salt Lake improves to 5-1-1 with 16 points, and the club listed itself fifth in the West after the match. RSL is unbeaten in six and has now won two straight. The club also said it has opened a home season with four straight wins for only the second time ever, the other coming in 2016. Inter Miami visits on Wednesday, followed by a trip to the LA Galaxy on Sunday.
"There's no shortcuts in this sport, there's no shortcuts in life. The graft you put forth is the reward you receive in the end," Mastroeni said.
San Diego falls to 3-2-3 with 11 points, ninth in the West according to RSL. After opening the season 3-0-0, San Diego is winless in five and has lost three straight, to San Jose, Minnesota and now RSL. The first meeting between these teams finished 2-2 in San Diego on March 22. Next up is a trip to Houston on Wednesday.
One Half for the Highlight Reel
RSL's first half was a highlight reel cut by someone with no patience for buildup. San Diego won the possession battle and the corner count, and none of it mattered. As Mastroeni put it, "that's who we are, and that's what we're aiming to be." For one half in Sandy, it was hard to argue.
