Diego Luna Opens, Zavier Gozo Closes as Real Salt Lake Beat Sporting KC 3-1 to Stay Unbeaten in Five
Diego Luna scored in the 4th minute, Sergi Solans and Zavier Gozo added second-half goals, and Real Salt Lake beat Sporting Kansas City 3-1 to extend its unbeaten run to five.

Sporting Kansas City's afternoon in Sandy started badly and never recovered. Diego Luna saw to that.
Luna scored in the 4th minute, Sergi Solans added a second after hitting the crossbar twice, and 19-year-old Zavier Gozo iced it with a stunning finish as Real Salt Lake beat Sporting KC 3-1 at America First Field on Saturday. Dejan Joveljic pulled one back for the visitors, but RSL controlled this from start to finish, climbing to 4-1-1 with 13 points. Sporting dropped to 1-1-4 with 4.
Luna Sets the Tone
The opener came almost immediately. Noel Caliskan found Luna in space at the top of the box, Luna took a touch and ripped a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner. It was his first goal of the season, and RSL's recap noted it came in his first start of the 2026 campaign. Talk about making an entrance.
Sporting KC head coach Raphael Wicky did not hide what that early goal seemed to do to his players. "Throughout the first half, we gave so many balls away; easy balls in our own half which leads to big chances," he said, per the club.
RSL smelled blood. Rafael Cabral had to make a save from Calvin Harris in the 17th minute, but otherwise the next half hour was a one-way street. Solans hit the crossbar from very close range in the 22nd minute off a Morgan Guilavogui ball, then rattled it again with a shot from the center of the box in the 41st after Alexandros Katranis crossed. John Pulskamp also had to deny Zavier Gozo in the 19th and Solans again in the 44th. A VAR check right before halftime ended with no penalty for RSL, and somehow it was only 1-0 at the break.
Solans Finally Breaks Through
Ten minutes into the second half, Solans got the reward his afternoon deserved. Gozo laid the ball off, and the rookie Spaniard slotted a right-footed shot from the middle of the box into the bottom left corner. RSL said it was his third goal in four MLS matches, while the AP noted he has three goals in his first four career MLS starts.
Sporting answered quickly. In the 59th minute, Justin Reynolds found Joveljic in the middle of the box, and the striker finished left-footed into the bottom left corner. The AP said it was Joveljic's first goal of the season, and Sporting KC's postgame quotes page called it Reynolds' first MLS assist.
"It's a nice personal achievement," Reynolds said of the assist, per Sporting KC. "I'm going to be proud to get my first assist, but I'm not happy."
That was as close as the visitors got. Wicky changed shape with Jacob Bartlett and Zorhan Bassong coming on in the 64th minute, and Manu García forced Cabral into a save in the 69th, but RSL kept carving out chances at the other end.
Gozo Puts a Bow on It
The 82nd minute delivered the highlight of the day. Caliskan slipped a short pass to Gozo on the right side of the box, and the teenager hit a right-footed shot into the top left corner. The AP described it as a volley that Gozo flicked up and rifled into the net, and RSL called it the game-icing goal. It was Gozo's second goal of the season, per the club.
RSL almost added a fourth when substitute Jesús Barea hit the left post in the fourth minute of stoppage time. At that point it would have been piling on.
The Men Who Made It Work
Gozo was everywhere. One goal, one assist, four shots and two on target, and he was the one who sparked the move that produced Solans' goal. RSL's club notes credited him with a hand in all three goals, but ESPN's data gives him the goal and one assist. Either way, a 19-year-old taking over a rivalry game is a big deal.
Caliskan was the quiet engine with two assists, and RSL said it was his first multi-assist performance for the club. Luna took four shots and scored, and Solans fired five, put two on target and hit the woodwork twice. That is a striker in rhythm.
For Sporting KC, Pulskamp made four saves and kept the margin respectable. Joveljic finished his one shot. The issue was that the rest of the team barely got a look: Sporting managed just five shots in total.
The Turning Point
Honestly, the 4th minute. Wicky said himself that he could not say for sure whether the early goal sapped his team's confidence, but he described players who were nervous on the ball and did not want it. RSL fed on those mistakes for 90 minutes. When your opponent concedes four minutes in and spends much of the half giving the ball away, the scoreline almost writes itself.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Real Salt Lake 22, Sporting KC 5. On target, it was 7 to 3.
- Possession: Sporting actually had more of the ball, 51.4% to 48.6%, and did almost nothing with it.
- Woodwork: RSL hit the frame three times, twice through Solans and once through Barea.
- Corners: RSL earned 7 corners to Sporting's 1.
- Saves: Pulskamp made 4; Cabral made 2.
What It Means
RSL is rolling. The club's unbeaten run now sits at five matches, including wins over Seattle Sounders FC, Atlanta United FC and Austin FC and a 2-2 draw at San Diego FC, and it is a perfect 3-0-0 at home. RSL's own recap had the team second in the Western Conference after the match. San Diego FC visits on April 18.
Sporting KC is in trouble. Back-to-back losses, a 1-1-4 record and RSL's recap placed it 15th in the West. Wicky was blunt: "today, by far, was not good enough to win an MLS game."
Closing Take
This was a vibe check for both clubs, and the results could not be more different. RSL has young stars playing with swagger, and Sporting looks like a team still figuring out its identity. If RSL's season were a playlist, Luna, Solans and Gozo would be on repeat right now. Sporting needs a new track, and fast.
