Two months of frustration, gone in 90 minutes. San Diego FC had not won an MLS match since March 7, and on Wednesday night at Snapdragon Stadium the dam did not just crack. It exploded.

David Vazquez scored twice, Anders Dreyer, Pedro Soma and Marcus Ingvartsen added one each, and San Diego FC crushed Austin FC 5-0 in front of 19,194 fans. It was the club's first league win in 10 tries and, according to San Diego, the third time it has scored five in an MLS regular-season match, tying the highest-scoring mark in club history.

A Blitz in the First 17 Minutes

San Diego came out like a team that had been reading its own bad press. Ingvartsen dragged an early chance wide in the fourth minute, and four minutes later the hosts were ahead. Onni Valakari found Vazquez in the six-yard box, and his left-footed touch from very close range rolled into the bottom left corner. San Diego's recap says an Austin defender tried to clear it on the line and could not.

Brad Stuver had to save from Luca Bombino in the 10th minute, Vazquez fired over twice more, and then San Diego doubled the lead in the 17th. Soma threaded a through ball between defenders, and Dreyer buried a left-footed shot from the right side of the box into the bottom left corner. Per the club, it was Dreyer's sixth league goal of the season.

Austin had looks of their own. CJ Fodrey headed wide in the 10th minute, Facundo Torres forced Duran Ferree into a save in the 14th, and Ferree stopped Fodrey again in the 39th. But the visitors never really pressed San Diego, and the 2-0 halftime lead felt bigger than the score.

The Turning Point

Any thought of an Austin comeback lasted nine minutes into the second half. In the 54th minute, Alex Mighten laid the ball off to Soma outside the box, and Soma, making only his third MLS start of the season according to the club, ripped a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner. San Diego's notes say it was Soma's first career MLS goal, and with the assist on Dreyer's strike, his first MLS assist too.

From there, it was a matter of how many. Stuver made saves on Ingvartsen in the 57th minute and Dreyer in the 60th and 63rd, and Austin lost Fodrey to an injury, with Owen Wolff replacing him in the 63rd minute. Austin made three more changes in the 69th minute, but nothing slowed San Diego down.

In the 79th minute, Bombino slipped a pass through the Austin back line and Ingvartsen finished from the left side of the six-yard box. Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, Aníbal Godoy set up Vazquez on a fast break, and he finished with a left-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner. ESPN credits Godoy with the assist, while San Diego's box score also lists Alejandro Alvarado Jr.

Star Turns

David Vazquez. Two goals on six shots, and the club says they were his first two of the 2026 regular season and the ninth and 10th of his MLS career. "Yeah, it feels amazing to not only get one goal, but two goals, super happy," Vazquez said, per the club.

Pedro Soma. One goal, one assist and a long-awaited breakthrough. "And then the goal was, I had the space, and I decided to shoot, and thank God it went in," Soma said. He also offered the best behind-the-scenes report of the night: "Yeah, the guys are dancing right now. David is the guy on aux, so he was blasting some music, but very happy."

Anders Dreyer. One goal on five shots, three of them on target, plus a constant threat on the right. Head coach Mikey Varas called him "a massive, massive player for us."

Marcus Ingvartsen. One goal on four shots. The club says it was his team-leading ninth goal of the MLS season and his fifth in his last six league matches.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: San Diego outshot Austin 22-9 and put 10 on target to Austin's three.
  • Possession: San Diego had 58.5 percent of the ball.
  • Passing: San Diego completed 637 passes to Austin's 416.
  • Saves: Stuver made five saves and still conceded five. Ferree made three for the clean sheet.
  • Discipline: One yellow card all night, to Bombino in the 44th minute.

What It Means

San Diego improved to 4-4-5 with 16 points and have now taken points from three straight league matches after draws with LAFC and Seattle. The club says it was their first shutout since that March 7 win at Sporting Kansas City, and Ferree's fourth career clean sheet. Before Wednesday, San Diego had gone nine league matches without a win, with five straight losses in the middle of that run.

Varas saw it coming. "I think we were clean on the ball and at the same time, vertical with it," he said. He added that "this is not an overnight thing," and that "you could feel that the group was building momentum."

Ingvartsen was just as blunt about what the win meant: "today we put together almost a complete performance."

Austin fell to 3-5-5 with 14 points, and this one stings after a three-match unbeaten run that included wins over the Houston Dynamo and St. Louis CITY SC and a 2-2 draw at Minnesota United on Sunday. Three shots on target in a match like this tells you how little Austin created once the game got away from them.

San Diego stays home to host FC Cincinnati on Saturday, May 16, according to the club, while Austin return home the same day to face Sporting Kansas City.

Closing Take

This was the soccer version of a breakup glow-up. San Diego spent nine league matches looking for answers, then dropped five goals from four different scorers and threw a locker room dance party after. Whether it lasts is a question for the weekend. On Wednesday night, the aux cord belonged to Vazquez, and so did the night.
