San Diego FC Rout CF Montréal 5-0 for Largest Margin of Victory in Club History as Five Players Score
Five different players scored, including 18-year-old Bryan Zamblé on his professional debut, as San Diego FC beat 10-man CF Montréal 5-0 for its largest margin of victory.

Five goals, five different scorers, a 19-year-old goalkeeper keeping a clean sheet in his first MLS start and an 18-year-old scoring four minutes into his professional debut. San Diego FC's second MLS season opened like a highlight reel somebody forgot to edit down.
San Diego FC beat CF Montréal 5-0 on Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium in front of 25,412 fans. Christopher McVey, Amahl Pellegrino, Onni Valakari, Marcus Ingvartsen and teenager Bryan Zamblé all scored, and according to the club it was the largest margin of victory in club history and its first home opener win. San Diego starts 1-0-0 with three points. Montréal, reduced to 10 men five minutes into the second half, opens 0-0-1.
The Set Piece Plan Pays Off
Montréal actually landed the first punch, sort of. Hennadii Synchuk tried his luck from a difficult angle on the left in the 4th minute, and Duran Ferree got down to save it. It would be one of only two Montréal shots on target all night.
After that, San Diego took over. Mikey Varas' side won two early corners, and the second one produced the opener in the 14th minute. Anders Dreyer swung it in, McVey met it in the center of the box, and his header nestled into the bottom left corner. Varas said afterward that using set pieces "to unlock games" was a focus this year. Box checked.
The rest of the half was a possession clinic. San Diego finished the night with 69 percent of the ball and 621 accurate passes to Montréal's 249, and you could feel the gap growing. Montréal's best attacking spell around the half-hour produced two corners and blocked shots from Prince Owusu and Brayan Vera, but nothing that tested Ferree.
Then came the dagger before the break. In the second minute of stoppage time, Olger Escobar forced a save from Ferree at one end. At the other, Dreyer's left-footed shot was pushed away by Thomas Gillier, and Pellegrino pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0 from the center of the box.
The Turning Point
Montréal made two changes at halftime, but any comeback hopes evaporated almost immediately. A VAR review in the 49th minute upgraded a card for Tomás Avilés, and the defender was sent off in the 50th. Down a man and down two goals against a team that was already dominating the ball? That is not a puzzle. That is a horror movie.
San Diego went for the throat. In the 53rd minute Ingvartsen laid the ball off for Valakari, who drove a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. Six minutes later Dreyer had a shot blocked, San Diego won a corner, and Dreyer delivered again for Ingvartsen, who lashed a left-footed shot into the top left corner. 4-0, and the remaining half-hour was a victory lap.
Varas loved the hunger.
"That when we have one, we want two. When we have two, we want three, and so on and so on," he said, describing the culture he is trying to build.
The Kid Gets His Moment
The best story came late. Zamblé, an 18-year-old graduate of the Right to Dream Academy, came on for Pellegrino in the 81st minute. Four minutes later, Jeppe Tverskov found him in the center of the box, and the club said he cut past a defender before finishing right-footed into the bottom left corner. First professional goal, four minutes into his professional debut. Script writers would call that too much.
"I think that would be really important for his confidence," Varas said.
The Standouts
Anders Dreyer did not score, but he ran the show. Two assists, five shots, two on target, and his fingerprints were on three of the goals.
Duran Ferree made his first career MLS start, per the club, and kept a clean sheet with two saves. The San Diego native described it as "a full circle moment," and Varas raved about his composure.
"One thing that he does have is, the moment will never be too big for him," Varas said.
Marcus Ingvartsen had a goal and an assist before coming off in the 60th minute.
Christopher McVey scored San Diego's first goal of the season, his third with the club and his fifth MLS regular season goal, according to San Diego.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: San Diego 69 percent, Montréal 31 percent.
- Passes: San Diego attempted 696, Montréal 309.
- Shots on target: San Diego 7 of 10 shots, Montréal 2 of 6.
- Saves: Two apiece for Ferree and Gillier.
- Goals: Five scorers, and the club said the output tied its highest in club history.
What It Means
For San Diego, this was about as good an opening statement as a club can make. The club said it has now won both of its season openers, and the five goals matched its record scoring output, set in a 5-3 win at Vancouver on June 25, 2025. Next up is St. Louis CITY SC at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday, March 1.
Pellegrino was already thinking about tomorrow.
"We win today, 5-0, and I think we'll come in tomorrow and be really good," he said.
For Montréal, it is a brutal start to the season. Two shots on target, a red card and five goals conceded in the first-ever meeting between the clubs. The trip to the Chicago Fire on Feb. 28 cannot come soon enough.
Closing Take
Some opening nights are tentative. This one was a declaration. San Diego spread the goals across five players, gave a teenager a debut to remember and handed the gloves to a hometown keeper who never looked rattled. It played like a team with no interest in easing into anything.
Varas, for his part, kept the perspective.
"At the same time, this is just one step in a very long journey that we're going to have this year," he said.
One step. Five goals. Not a bad way to start the walk.
