Somewhere in Austin, a Q2 Stadium regular is checking whether the scoreboard is stuck. For the third straight home match, Austin FC finished level at 1-1.

Paxten Aaronson gave the Colorado Rapids a 22nd-minute lead with a strike from outside the box, Facundo Torres headed in the equalizer in the 79th, and Austin FC and the Rapids drew 1-1 on Wednesday night. There was no winner, two hydration breaks in 87-degree heat, and one very specific sense of déjà vu for the home crowd of 20,738, per Austin's match report.

Aaronson Finds the Corner

Austin started with intent. Torres sent an early shot narrowly wide in the first minute, and Brandon Vázquez blazed one high and wide from distance in the ninth. Colorado's first real look came from Youssef Maziz, who forced Brad Stuver into a save in the 10th minute and had another effort blocked a minute later.

The opener arrived out of a scramble. Darren Yapi had a shot blocked in the 22nd minute, the ball bounced around the top of the area, and Aaronson met it with a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. The Rapids' recap describes it as a volley after a clearance came straight back to him, while Austin's says it went in off the post. Either way, it counted.

Colorado's night got complicated soon after. Maziz went off injured in the 27th minute, right after the first drinks break, with Josh Atencio replacing him. The Rapids barely blinked: Donavan Phillip, making his first MLS start according to the club, forced Stuver into saves in the 29th and 32nd minutes. Austin's response before halftime was a Vázquez header wide off a corner and a Mikkel Desler shot over the bar. Vázquez, caught offside three times on the night, never found the target.

Austin Turns Up the Pressure

Austin attempted 17 crosses on the night, and the ones that mattered came after the break. Jorge Alastuey replaced Ilie Sánchez at the break, and in the 58th minute Christian Ramírez and Zan Kolmanic came on for Vázquez and Jon Gallagher. That double change changed the game.

Kolmanic set up Ramírez for a shot that Nico Hansen saved near the top of the goal in the 64th minute, conceding a corner. He then found Desler with a set-piece delivery in the 74th, but the header flew too high. At the other end, Aaronson nearly ended the debate in the 77th minute, forcing Stuver into a save low toward the bottom right corner.

Two minutes later, Austin finally cashed in. Kolmanic whipped in a cross, and Torres rose in the center of the box and guided a header past Hansen into the bottom left corner. The Verde & Black pushed for more: Przemyslaw Placheta fired high in the 84th, Ramírez headed over off a corner in the 88th and dragged a shot just wide on a break in the 90th. Colorado held on.

Aaronson Keeps Carrying the Load

Aaronson was the most dangerous player on the field. Four shots, two on target, one goal, and ESPN also logged three fouls committed, the mark of a No. 10 who was working both ways. The Rapids say it was his fifth goal of the season and the 10th of his MLS career, and his club-high 11 goal contributions (five goals, six assists) show how much of Colorado's attack runs through him.

Stuver was the reason Austin got anything. Four saves, including the 77th-minute stop on Aaronson, kept the deficit at one long enough for the cavalry to arrive. Hansen made just one save, but he had to deal with 17 Austin crosses and eight corners.

Kolmanic deserves a highlight package of his own. He came on in the 58th minute and was involved in three of Austin's best second-half chances, including the assist. Austin's report also credits Ervin Torres on the equalizer; ESPN lists Kolmanic alone.

The Turning Point

The 58th-minute double substitution. Before it, Austin had not put a single shot on target. After it, both of Austin's shots on target came from Kolmanic deliveries, Ramírez stretched the back line, and Colorado spent much of the final half hour defending its own box, with Aaronson's 77th-minute chance the big exception. Torres' header was the payoff of a bench move that worked exactly as drawn up.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: 11 apiece, but Colorado put 5 on target to Austin's 2.
  • Saves: Stuver made 4, Hansen made 1.
  • Fouls: Colorado committed 18, Austin 8.
  • Offsides: Austin was flagged 7 times; Colorado 2.
  • Passing: Both teams completed exactly 424 passes.

A Road Point Means Something in Colorado

Colorado moved to 10-2-12 with 32 points, and the club's recap had the Rapids seventh in the Western Conference. The point matters more than it looks. The ESPN sheets show Colorado had lost four straight league road games since a 1-0 win at Minnesota on May 13, including 3-0 defeats at San Diego FC and Columbus, and this was only the Rapids' second draw of the entire season. A three-match homestand starts Saturday against CF Montréal at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, where Colorado has been far more comfortable.

Austin moved to 6-8-10 with 26 points, and the Rapids' recap listed Austin 14th in the West. The sheets show a five-match league unbeaten run, with wins at Seattle and Portland, but also three straight home draws, all by the identical 1-1 score, against Philadelphia, San Jose and now Colorado. After losing 1-0 in Colorado on Aug. 1, Austin at least took something from the rematch. Next is a Sunday trip to Vancouver.

Groundhog Day on the Green

Bill Murray had to relive the same day until he got it right. Austin keeps reliving the same 1-1 at home, and the escape hatch is obvious: more of what happened after the 58th minute, sooner. Colorado, for its part, will happily take a road point and go home. In a season like the Rapids', that counts as a breakthrough.
