Ryan Gauld hit the crossbar twice on Sunday, once from the penalty spot. The Vancouver Whitecaps put 20 shots toward Brad Stuver's goal, owned the ball and spent the last half hour camped in Austin's box. And Christian Ramírez, with exactly two shots, decided the whole thing.

Ramírez scored both goals as Austin FC beat the Western Conference-leading Whitecaps 2-1 at BC Place. According to Vancouver, it was Austin's first-ever win in that building, and it came in front of 23,855 fans who spent the afternoon watching the woodwork do Austin's defending for them.

Counterpunch, Then the Crossbar

Vancouver came out flying. Gauld slipped Brian White in for an early look that Stuver saved in the sixth minute, and Rui Modesto, making his MLS and club debut after a summer move from Udinese, per the Whitecaps, fired high and wide in the 17th. Cheikh Sabaly and Andrés Cubas also got looks before the half hour.

Austin needed one chance. A minute after Vancouver's second corner of the day, the visitors broke the other way in the 28th minute. Facundo Torres sent a cross into Ramírez's path, and the striker finished low into the bottom right corner past Yohei Takaoka.

The Whitecaps should have been level before halftime. Besard Sabovic brought Gauld down in the box in the 38th minute, referee Victor Rivas pointed to the spot, and two minutes later Gauld's left-footed penalty crashed off the crossbar. Austin were living dangerously in other ways, too, with Jon Bell and Joseph Rosales booked within two minutes of each other.

White Strikes, Ramírez Answers

Vancouver manager Jesper Sørensen sent on Édier Ocampo for Modesto at halftime, and the Whitecaps broke through four minutes after the restart. Gauld threaded a through ball to White, who slotted it into the bottom right corner. Per the club, it was his 15th MLS goal of the season, leaving him four behind Golden Boot leader Lionel Messi.

One minute later, Gauld nearly flipped the game completely. White wriggled between two defenders and laid it off, and Gauld's right-footed shot from outside the box clattered off the bar again. Twice in ten minutes of game time, the same player, the same crossbar. Some days the universe is just not taking requests.

Stuver then kept out a Gauld effort from the center of the box in the 59th minute, and Austin punished Vancouver a minute later. Rosales found Ramírez on the right side of the box, and the striker smashed a right-footed shot into the top right corner over Takaoka. According to Austin, it was his team-best seventh goal of the season.

Austin Hold the Fort

The last half hour was a siege. Vancouver threw on Jeevan Badwal, Emmanuel Sabbi, Yadaly Diaby and Rayan Elloumi, and the chances kept coming: a Mathías Laborda header off a Gauld corner in the 67th minute, a Sabbi shot that just missed in the 89th and another in stoppage time, and an Elloumi header four minutes into added time.

Austin made the ending tenser than it needed to be. Guilherme Biro collected his second yellow card in the 90th minute, which the Whitecaps said was for delaying a restart, leaving the visitors with 10 men for six minutes of stoppage time. Stuver's best moment came at the death, when he tipped away a Diaby shot bound for the top right corner, and Laborda headed the resulting corner just over.

Stars of the Match

Christian Ramírez turned two shots into two goals before coming off in the 85th minute. That is about as efficient as a striker's afternoon gets.

Brad Stuver made five saves, including the stop on Gauld in the 59th minute and the late one on Diaby. Takaoka, by contrast, did not make one.

Ryan Gauld was everywhere for Vancouver: four shots, an assist on White's goal and two shots off the crossbar. On most days, that line includes a goal or two.

Facundo Torres and Joseph Rosales each set up a Ramírez goal, and Torres drew four fouls while carrying Austin's counters.

Brian White gave Vancouver their goal. Per the Whitecaps, he now has 95 goals in his career with the club.

The Turning Point

Gauld's penalty. Convert it, and Vancouver go into halftime level with all the momentum in a building where they had never lost to Austin. Instead, Austin kept their lead, and when White did equalize, Ramírez had his answer ready 11 minutes later.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Vancouver 20, Austin 4. Austin put two on target and scored on both.
  • Saves: Stuver 5, Takaoka 0.
  • Possession: Vancouver held 59.7 percent and completed 470 passes to Austin's 290.
  • Corners and crosses: Vancouver won six corners to Austin's zero and sent in 27 crosses; Austin answered with 28 clearances.
  • Woodwork: Gauld hit the crossbar twice, once from the penalty spot.

What It Means

Austin improved to 7-8-10 with 29 points. Per the club, they are now unbeaten in six MLS matches, have won three straight on the road after earlier wins at Seattle and Portland, and have moved within one game of the playoff line.

Vancouver fell to 14-4-6 with 46 points but, according to the Whitecaps, still sit at the top of the Western Conference. They have now lost three of their last five league matches at BC Place, and the schedule does not ease up: a Canadian Championship semifinal second leg in Montréal on Wednesday, with the tie level at 1-1, then a trip to Real Salt Lake on Sept. 19. Austin visit FC Dallas the same night.

The Closing Take

Vancouver played like the better team for long stretches, and Austin played like the team that had read the script. Ramírez treated his two looks at goal like a speedrunner treats a level: no wasted moves, straight to the credits. The Whitecaps will spend the week wondering how 20 shots and two crossbars added up to zero points.
