Toklomati, Abada Lead Charlotte FC Past Atlanta United 2-0 for Fourth Straight Win in Atlanta
Idan Toklomati and Liel Abada scored as Charlotte FC beat Atlanta United 2-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, ending Atlanta's three-match winning streak.

Atlanta United had the ball. Charlotte FC had the plan. On a Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the plan won comfortably.
Idan Toklomati finished a slick first-half move, Liel Abada doubled the lead on a breakaway in the 48th minute, and Charlotte beat its rival 2-0. According to Charlotte, it was the club's fourth straight win in Atlanta, and it ended Atlanta's three-match winning streak in the least fun way possible: by letting the hosts keep the ball and then sprinting past them.
Charlotte Strikes First, Then Waits
Charlotte came out flying. It forced two corners inside the first five minutes, Toklomati dragged an early chance wide in the 11th, and Allan Saint-Maximin was already making defenders look a step slow. Lucas Hoyos kept Atlanta level in the 17th minute with a double stop, first on a Toklomati effort from the middle of the box and then on Djibril Diani's follow-up attempt.
Hoyos could not hold out much longer. In the 22nd minute, Saint-Maximin switched the play to Pep Biel on the far side, Biel slid it across, and Toklomati tapped in with his left foot from close range. Charlotte noted it was the second year running that Toklomati has scored in Atlanta.
From there the game took on a very specific shape. Atlanta pushed, recycled and crossed. Cooper Sanchez had two efforts blocked from outside the area in the 26th and 28th minutes, Alexey Miranchuk was blocked in the 34th, and Tristan Muyumba saw one shot blocked and another fly high and wide in the 37th. Charlotte's back line of Tim Ream, Henry Kessler, David Schnegg and Will Cleary kept throwing bodies in the way. Hoyos made one more save in first-half stoppage time to deny Abada and keep the deficit at one.
The Early Second-Half Knockout
Whatever Atlanta coach Tata Martino said at halftime did not survive the 48th minute. Charlotte broke the other way, Saint-Maximin played Abada in, and Abada cut onto his left foot and finished into the bottom left corner from the right side of the box. Two-zip, and the counterattack blueprint was complete.
Atlanta's best response came quickly. Muyumba forced Kristijan Kahlina into a save in the 51st minute, but the hosts never found a clean look after that. Martino made four changes at once in the 64th minute, bringing on Steven Alzate, Sergio Santos, Ronald Hernández and Adrian Gill, with Hernández replacing Matt Edwards because of an injury. Enzo Dovlo followed in the 70th minute for his first-team debut, per the club.
Charlotte kept threatening on the break. Toklomati headed a Biel corner just wide in the 67th minute, and Abada had another shot blocked in the 70th. In the closing stretch, Kahlina saved a Gill drive in the 82nd minute and a Sanchez effort in stoppage time, and Santos headed over from a late corner. That was as close as Atlanta came.
Saint-Maximin Pulls the Strings
Saint-Maximin did not score, but he was the most dangerous player on the field. He was involved in the build-up to the opener and assisted the second goal outright, and the Atlanta defenders who spent the night chasing him will be seeing that No. 10 in their sleep. When a winger makes a back line look like it is running on a treadmill, the scoreline usually follows.
Toklomati was the busiest attacker on either side, with five shots, two on target and a goal before Archie Goodwin replaced him in the 77th minute. Abada added four shots, two on target and the dagger, and Charlotte says the goal was his eighth goal contribution since the team returned from the World Cup break.
Kahlina, meanwhile, made three saves for the clean sheet, two of them on shots from outside the area. That is the point of Charlotte's approach: make the opponent shoot from distance, then make the stops that matter.
On the Atlanta side, Sanchez was a bright spot in defeat. The club said the 18-year-old's 20th start made him the second-youngest player in Atlanta United history to reach that number, at 18 years, 156 days.
The Turning Point: The 48th Minute
Atlanta went into halftime down one goal with the momentum of a team that had dominated the ball. The 48th-minute counter erased all of it. Up 1-0, Charlotte could sit and absorb. Up 2-0, it could practically order takeout. Atlanta still had more than 40 minutes to play, but it never generated the kind of chance that would have made those minutes nervous ones.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Atlanta 58.6 percent, Charlotte 41.4 percent. Ball dominance, zero goals.
- Shots on target: Charlotte 5, Atlanta 3, despite Atlanta out-shooting Charlotte 18-13.
- Blocked shots: 11 of Atlanta's attempts were blocked, a credit to Charlotte's defense.
- Crosses: Atlanta tried 29 crosses and completed two.
- Corners: Atlanta earned 11 to Charlotte's seven and scored from none of them.
What It Means
Charlotte improved to 10-5-7 with 35 points and has now gone four league matches without a loss, including two straight wins (a 3-1 home win over Columbus on Aug. 15, a 3-3 draw at Toronto on Aug. 19, a 3-1 home win over D.C. United on Aug. 22, and this). The Crown also improved on the 2-2 draw these clubs played in Charlotte on July 22. Next up, per the club, is a home date with the Houston Dynamo next Saturday.
Atlanta fell to 6-3-13, still on 21 points. The loss snapped a three-match winning run that the AP had called the club's first such streak in five years, built on wins over the Red Bulls, Minnesota and Sporting Kansas City. Atlanta now heads to Miami to face Inter Miami.
The Heist Movie Nobody in Atlanta Wanted
Charlotte's night played like a heist film. Let the house keep its chips, wait for one opening, then walk out the door with the vault. Atlanta had 606 passes, 11 corners and 18 shots, and none of it mattered against a team that only needed two clean breaks.
The rivalry has a new storyline now. Atlanta gets to keep possession. Charlotte gets to keep the points.
