Robert Lewandowski needed 20 minutes to introduce himself to Soldier Field, and a little under 70 to make sure nobody forgets the evening. The Polish striker scored twice in his home debut, including the winner midway through the second half, and the Chicago Fire beat Charlotte FC in front of 32,183 fans on Saturday night.

Chicago won 2-1, coming from behind after Pep Biel gave Charlotte an early lead. Per the Fire, they were Lewandowski's first two goals in Major League Soccer, and he became just the fourth player in club history to score multiple goals in his home debut, joining Frank Klopas (1998), Andy Herron (2008) and Tomasz Frankowski (2008). The AP noted it was also Chicago's first home match in more than two months, which made it quite the welcome-back party.

Charlotte Strikes, Lewandowski Answers

Charlotte came out sharp. Biel, who finished with a game-high eight shots, missed twice in the opening 17 minutes before he finally found the range in the 18th. Idan Toklomati teed him up on the right side of the box, and Biel ripped a right-footed finish into the top right corner to put Charlotte up 1-0.

The lead lasted about as long as a TikTok trend. The Fire said it took Chicago 93 seconds to equalize, and the goal was pure Lewandowski. Philip Zinckernagel headed the ball down to him just outside the area, Lewandowski took a couple of touches and drilled a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. The Fire described the crowd as roaring. It was that kind of moment.

The rest of the half was a scramble. Zinckernagel forced Kristijan Kahlina into a save in the 24th minute, Robin Lod had two looks blocked or wide, and Charlotte kept trying to work the ball to Biel, who had another effort blocked in first-half stoppage time. It was 1-1 at the break.

The Winner, Built Patiently

Chicago owned most of the dangerous moments after halftime. Zinckernagel tested Kahlina again from a tight angle in the 56th minute, and Lewandowski headed a corner wide in the 66th. Two minutes later, he found the winner. The Fire said the move featured more than 25 passes before Lod slipped the ball to Lewandowski inside the box, and the striker finished to the bottom left corner again in the 68th minute.

From there, Charlotte had the ball and very little else. Dean Smith's side finished with 53.8 percent possession and 14 shots, but only one of those shots was on target, and that was Biel's goal. Rodolfo Aloko came on and was flagged offside three times. Chicago's best chance to put it away came from substitute Puso Dithejane, whose shot was saved by Kahlina in stoppage time.

Lewandowski, Zinckernagel and the Supporting Cast

Lewandowski's line: four shots, two on target, two goals. Efficient is an understatement. He even picked up a yellow card in stoppage time, just so the night would have a little edge.

"That type of quality is hard to find," Fire coach Gregg Berhalter said, per MLSsoccer.com. "When you look at the two goals he scored and some of the other plays he made in the game, it's just very high quality."

Lewandowski explained why the first one mattered so much. "Every time I go to a new club, I'm waiting for the first goal," he said. "It's important for me to show that I'm here, to score the goal and for us to win the game."

His first two MLS games did not go to plan. ESPN's match data shows he started a 3-2 loss at Inter Miami on July 22 and came off the bench in a 3-1 loss at New York City FC three days later. This was the night the signing started to make sense on the scoreboard.

He admitted the fit is still a work in progress. "With a new team, you need a little bit more time to understand how your teammates play," Lewandowski said. Berhalter, for his part, is already thinking bigger: "This is hopefully the beginning of a lot of goals."

Zinckernagel was the creative engine. Per the club, his assist was his eighth of the season and his 13th goal contribution. Lod added his third assist of 2026 in what the Fire said was his first start alongside Lewandowski, and the club noted it was also his third career assist against Charlotte. Between the posts, Chris Brady made his 50th regular-season start, per the club, and did not have to make a single save.

The 93 Seconds That Changed the Night

The Fire said they leveled the game 93 seconds after Biel's opener, and that may have been the whole ballgame. Charlotte arrived unbeaten in its previous two matches and had just quieted a big crowd. Instead of a long, nervy stretch chasing the game, Chicago was level almost immediately, and the momentum never fully swung back to Charlotte.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Chicago 5, Charlotte 1.
  • Total shots: 14 apiece.
  • Possession: Charlotte 53.8 percent, Chicago 46.2 percent.
  • Saves: Kristijan Kahlina 3, Chris Brady 0.
  • Corners: Chicago 8, Charlotte 6.

Back in the Mix

Chicago moved to 9-2-6 with 29 points, and MLSsoccer.com said the Fire sat fourth in the Eastern Conference with a game in hand. The win snapped a two-game skid, both of those on the road. Berhalter does not think his side has peaked yet. "I think we have another gear, to be honest. I think we showed glimpses," he said.

Charlotte fell to 7-4-7 with 25 points, and the AP noted it was the club's third straight defeat against the Fire. Both teams now turn to Leagues Cup, with Chicago facing Necaxa on Thursday and Charlotte meeting Pumas UNAM on Tuesday.

The Premiere Lived Up to the Trailer

Every summer blockbuster has a trailer that promises too much. The Fire's trailer was a famous striker, a two-year deal from Barcelona, per the AP, and two road losses to start. The premiere at Soldier Field delivered. Lewandowski said it best himself: "I'm really happy to be here." Chicago is happy he is there, too.
