Hugo Cuypers has turned scoring into a weekly habit, and Philadelphia's defense was simply the latest stop on the tour. Deep into a first half that dragged on for seven extra minutes, the Belgian striker headed in his fourth goal of the season and kept a streak alive that is starting to make Chicago Fire FC fans believe.

Chicago Fire FC beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Subaru Park, with Cuypers scoring for the fourth straight match and Jonathan Bamba firing in the winner on a 58th-minute counterattack. The Fire moved to 2-1-2 with seven points. The Union fell to 0-0-5, and the AP said Philadelphia extended its club record for consecutive losses to open a season.

Physical, Choppy and Then Suddenly Chaotic

This one started like rush-hour traffic: lots of stopping, very little going. Robin Lod was booked in the 8th minute, Dje Tah D'Avilla in the 23rd, and Philadelphia's Philippe Ndinga in the 37th. There were also several stoppages for injuries, the biggest coming when Philip Zinckernagel and Jesús Bueno collided. Zinckernagel could not continue and was replaced by Maren Haile-Selassie in the 31st minute, and the AP said he left the game under concussion protocol.

In between, both goalkeepers had a little work. Chris Brady stopped a long-range Bueno shot in the 6th minute, and Andre Blake saved an Anton Salétros effort from distance in the 19th. The Union came closest in the 35th minute, when Alejandro Bedoya headed a set-piece delivery from Milan Iloski off the crossbar.

The fourth official signaled seven minutes of added time at the end of the half, and those minutes turned out to be the best part of the afternoon. Blake saved from Lod two minutes into that added time, but the Fire kept coming. Andrew Gutman, making his first appearance of 2026 according to the club, swung in a cross and Cuypers headed home from point-blank range. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Philadelphia answered four minutes later. Per the Union, Frankie Westfield's throw-in found Bedoya, who nodded the ball toward Iloski, and Iloski kept it in the air with a looping header over Brady. The AP said it was his first goal of the season. Halftime arrived at 1-1, which felt like a minor miracle for a home side that had not taken a point all season.

Bamba Breaks It Open

The Fire came out of the break with intent. Cuypers fired wide in the 49th minute and headed over from a set piece in the 56th. Two minutes later, Chicago broke. Chicago's recap said Cuypers sent Lod away on the right, and Lod picked out an unmarked Bamba across the six-yard box. Bamba finished first time with his right foot into the bottom left corner. ESPN lists no assist on the goal, while the Fire credited Lod and Cuypers.

Union head coach Bradley Carnell threw on fresh legs, including 16-year-old Malik Jakupovic, who made his MLS debut according to the AP. Indiana Vassilev forced a save from Brady in the 73rd minute, and Nathan Harriel nearly scrambled one in from a set piece in the 79th. Lod hit the crossbar on another Chicago break in the 83rd, and that miss kept the door open. Philadelphia could not walk through it. Bruno Damiani's late header went high and wide, and the Fire saw out three minutes of stoppage time.

Who Delivered

Hugo Cuypers scored on one of his three shots and kept his streak going. Chicago said it was his third four-game scoring streak with the club, and that one more match with a goal would tie the club record for consecutive games with a goal.

Jonathan Bamba scored the winner with his only shot. The Fire said it was his second goal of the season, both game-winners, which is already a career high for him in that category.

Andrew Gutman played only the first half but delivered the cross for the opener in his first match of the season.

Robin Lod played until the 89th minute and had two shots, one of them off the bar.

For Philadelphia, Milan Iloski led the team with four shots and scored the equalizer, while Alejandro Bedoya set it up and hit the bar.

The Turning Point

The counterattack in the 58th minute. Philadelphia had just survived a Cuypers header and were trying to build pressure, but one quick Chicago break flipped the field. That became the story of the second half: Philly pushing, Chicago looking to break.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Philadelphia 12, Chicago 11. On target, Chicago led 4 to 3.
  • Possession: Chicago had 52.6 percent.
  • Clearances: Chicago made 36, a sign of how much defending they did after going ahead.
  • Crosses: Philadelphia sent in 19 to Chicago's 8, but only 4 were accurate.
  • Corners: The Union won 6 to Chicago's 2.

What It Means

Chicago bounced back from a 2-1 home loss to D.C. United the previous weekend. The club said it was their third all-time win at Subaru Park and their first in Chester since a 2-1 win on Aug. 3, 2013. Gregg Berhalter's side host Nashville SC on April 4 after the international break.

For Philadelphia, the problem is not getting blown out. Counting from the season's results, four of their five losses have been by a single goal. But a loss is a loss, and the AP noted the Union were the 2025 Supporters' Shield winners, which makes 0-0-5 even harder to digest. The Union's own recap said Carnell sent out a fifth different starting lineup in five matches. They visit Charlotte FC on April 4.

The Last Word

The Union looked like a band still searching for a song that works. Chicago, meanwhile, have a frontman who keeps hitting the high notes. As long as Cuypers keeps scoring, the Fire will be a tough out for anybody, and the next match could put him alongside a club record.
