Chiefs vs. Raiders: Kenneth Walker III and Patrick Mahomes Survive Las Vegas to Reach 4-0 in Week 4
Kenneth Walker III ran for 177 yards and two late touchdowns 19 seconds apart as the Chiefs beat the Raiders 30-27 in Week 4, keeping Patrick Mahomes perfect at Allegiant Stadium.

Las Vegas had the lead, the momentum and its coach's halftime guarantee. Then Kenneth Walker III and Patrick Mahomes turned the final five minutes into a fever dream, and the Raiders learned what every visitor to this town eventually figures out: the house always wins, and inside Allegiant Stadium, Mahomes is the house.
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Raiders 30-27 on Sunday, scoring 20 fourth-quarter points to move to 4-0 as the AFC's last unbeaten team. Walker ran for a career-best 177 yards and two touchdowns, Mahomes threw both of his scoring passes to Tyquan Thornton, and rookie safety Xavier Nwankpa sealed it by picking off Kirk Cousins in the final minute. Las Vegas fell to 3-1.
Three Quarters of Raiders Football, Then Chaos
For most of the afternoon, this looked like the Raiders' statement game. Cousins hit Ian Thomas for a 27-yard touchdown after Kansas City turned it over on downs on its opening drive. The Chiefs answered with a 10-play march capped by Mahomes' 2-yard touchdown to Thornton, but they lost Rashee Rice, who pulled up limping in the first quarter with a hamstring injury and never returned.
Las Vegas later bled eight minutes off the clock on a 15-play drive for a Matt Gay field goal, Harrison Butker matched it, and Gay's 48-yarder at the end of the half made it 13-10. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak was feeling it.
"We're winning," Kubiak said on the CBS broadcast at halftime. "We're going to win the game."
The third quarter was a scoreless standoff until Walker took a handoff and simply left. His 76-yard burst ended at the Las Vegas 8 only because cornerback Taron Johnson chased him down, and two plays later Mahomes found Thornton from 8 yards out for a 17-13 lead. It was the first time all season the Raiders' defense had given up fourth-quarter points, per the AP.
Gay kept the Raiders alive with field goals of 44 and 48 yards, and at 19-17 with 4:53 left, Las Vegas was a couple of stops from a 4-0 start.
Then came the avalanche. On third down, Mahomes stood in against a blitz and launched a 55-yarder to Thornton at the Raiders' 2. Thornton was hurt on the catch, a left ankle injury that required a cart. Walker scored on the next snap. Then the kickoff: linebacker Jeffrey Bassa knocked the ball loose from returner Dareke Young, Jack Cochrane fell on it, and Walker went 22 yards for another touchdown. Two touchdowns, 19 seconds apart on the game clock: down two became up 11.
Cousins refused to go quietly. He drove 65 yards in 1:16, found Brock Bowers from 20 yards out with 1:46 remaining and converted the two-point try to Cody White. Kansas City recovered the onside kick but went three-and-out, and Matt Araiza's 52-yard punt was downed at the 1 by Emmett Johnson. Cousins still got the Raiders to midfield before Nwankpa picked him off.
Walker Is Running Like Rent Is Due
Walker's day: 22 carries, 177 yards, 8.0 per carry, two scores. According to the Chiefs, he now has three games this season with at least 175 scrimmage yards, making him only the fourth player in league history to do that three times before Week 5, alongside Christian McCaffrey, Billy Sims and Jim Brown. That is not a hot streak. That is a résumé.
The one that got away was the 76-yarder. Next Gen Stats clocked Walker at 21.21 mph, and Johnson still caught him.
"I thought I was out of there until I started hearing breathing," Walker said.
Thornton cleared 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career (five catches, 111 yards, two touchdowns) before the injury. Mahomes was only 15 of 30 for 225 yards, but he made the throw that flipped the game, which is the job description.
"I trust him to do that," coach Andy Reid said. "I don't expect anything, but I do trust that he's going to do the right thing when the ball's in his hand."
Cousins deserved better: 31 of 52, 365 yards, two touchdowns and zero sacks taken. Bowers caught six passes for 86 yards, Michael Mayer added eight for 82, and Gay was perfect on four field goals.
Nineteen Seconds That Broke Las Vegas
Every close game has a hinge. This one had a punch. Bassa's forced fumble turned a four-point Chiefs lead into an 11-point cushion, and the Raiders' final touchdown only got them back within three. Las Vegas entered the game with the league's best turnover margin, according to the Chiefs, and lost the turnover battle 2-0.
The other problem was on the ground. The Raiders ran for 72 yards at 2.8 per carry, while Kansas City piled up 189 at 7.3.
"We've got to find that answer," Kubiak said of the running game. "That will be a big factor in us being a better football team."
Stats That Matter
- 20: Chiefs points in the fourth quarter after managing 10 through three.
- 0-for-2: Las Vegas in the red zone. Settling for three against this opponent is a slow way to lose.
- 7: Reid's wins at Allegiant Stadium, the most of any coach, per the AP. He is 7-1 there.
- 24: Combined points scored from Gay's go-ahead 48-yarder at 4:53 through the final whistle.
The AFC Has One Unbeaten Team Left
Kansas City is 4-0 for the fifth time under Mahomes and the eighth time under Reid, per the team, and after a bye it welcomes the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 18. The rest will help, because the receiver room just took two hits in one afternoon.
The Raiders are still one of the season's best surprises. Cousins' seven-game winning streak, which included the final four games of last season with Atlanta, is over, but this team pushed the building's undefeated landlord to the final minute. Next up: a trip to New England, their third road game in four weeks.
Pretty Is Optional
Mahomes has now won all six of his starts against the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, plus a Super Bowl in the same building. He did not pretend this one was clean.
"I keep saying it, but it's not always going to be pretty," Mahomes said. "That's a good football team, a good defense."
At halftime, Kubiak said two things: his team was winning, and it was going to win. He was right about the first one.
