Daniel Munie Sets Quakes Single-Season Record for a Defender as Earthquakes Edge Dynamo 1-0
Daniel Munie scored his record-setting fifth goal of the season and Angus Gunn made a late double save as the San Jose Earthquakes beat Houston Dynamo FC 1-0.

Angus Gunn was on the floor. He had just stuck out a leg to stop Nick Markanich's point-blank header, the rebound had dropped to Héctor Herrera, and the San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper had roughly no time to get up. So he guessed. He guessed right, stuck out a leg again, and kept the ball out.
That double save in the 88th minute protected Daniel Munie's first-half goal and gave the Earthquakes a 1-0 win over Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday night at PayPal Park. According to the Quakes, Munie's goal was his fifth of the league season, breaking John Doyle's club record for goals in a single season by a defender. Not bad for a center back.
Houston Had the Ball, San Jose Had the Looks
Houston controlled possession from the start, but San Jose created the better first-half chances. Benji Kikanovic headed over in the fifth minute, Ousseni Bouda nodded another over in the 22nd, Eduard Löwen dragged a shot just wide in the 29th, and Bouda smacked the left post three minutes later. Houston's best moment was a Guilherme strike in the 31st that flashed just wide of the far post.
San Jose head coach Bruce Arena saw Houston's plan early. "It was pretty clear from the start that Houston wanted to try to play behind our back line," he said. His back three mostly shut that down, and Arena singled out Munie, Jack Jasinski and Dave Romney afterward for handling it.
The goal came from a set piece in the 38th minute. Niko Tsakiris' corner found Beau Leroux in the box, Leroux worked himself a yard of space and sent a low cross in, and Munie turned it past Jonathan Bond from close range. It was Leroux's seventh assist of the league season, per the club.
The Quakes played on the edge all night. Ronaldo Vieira was booked inside the first minute, Leroux picked up a yellow in the 19th, and Kikanovic, who committed seven fouls on his own, was cautioned in the 90th.
Houston Turn Up the Heat
Houston's best spell arrived just after the hour. From a Guilherme set piece, Gunn had to save from Felipe Andrade inside the six-yard box in the 60th minute and from Lucas Halter a minute later. Ben Olsen went to his bench, sending on Herrera in the 65th minute and then Markanich, Matthew Arana and Franco Negri, while Arena countered with Nick Fernandez, Ian Harkes, Jack Skahan and Luka Jovanovic.
Then came the 88th minute. Lawrence Ennali crossed, Markanich met it from close range, and Gunn blocked it with his leg. Herrera hit the rebound first time, and Gunn's leg got there again. Gunn walked through it afterward like a man describing a parallel-parking job.
"The first one was a point-blank header, and it was more just about positioning and getting my leg out. Then I was on the floor, and I saw the guy pulling his leg back. I thought, 'I don't really have time to get up,' so I just kind of gambled that he was going to try to hit it into that corner," Gunn said.
He still had to deal with a Mateusz Bogusz shot from distance three minutes into stoppage time. He did.
Stars of the Night
Daniel Munie took one shot and scored with it. The Quakes say he now leads all MLS center backs with five goals, one more than Philadelphia's Neil Pierre, and he was named the club's man of the match.
Angus Gunn faced five shots on target and stopped every one, including two from inside the six-yard box and two in the same breathless sequence late on. "But tonight he did a great job," Arena said, after noting it had taken Gunn time to settle in.
Beau Leroux created the goal and kept the Quakes ticking before coming off in the 69th minute.
Guilherme was Houston's most dangerous player and the most fouled man on the field, drawing nine fouls. Mateusz Bogusz took three shots and forced Gunn into the final save of the night.
The Turning Point
The 88th-minute double save. Houston had finally broken San Jose's shape and had two shots from point-blank range in the space of a few seconds. One goal there and the Dynamo leave with a point they had probably earned on possession alone. Instead, Gunn's legs made it a statement win.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Houston held 62.4 percent and attempted 576 passes to San Jose's 337.
- Shots on target: Houston 5, San Jose 1. The Quakes scored with their only shot on target.
- Interceptions: San Jose made 15 to Houston's six.
- Fouls: San Jose committed 17, seven of them by Kikanovic, and took three yellow cards.
What It Means
San Jose improved to 12-5-8 with 41 points, and the Quakes said the win moved them up to fourth in the Western Conference. They are now unbeaten in four league matches, and the club noted the 12th win surpassed their league win total from the 2025 season. It was also Arena's 285th MLS regular-season win as a head coach, extending his own league record, per the Quakes. The man on the other bench, Olsen, is a former pupil: per the Quakes, Arena recruited him to the University of Virginia and later coached him at D.C. United and with the U.S. national team.
Houston fell to 13-4-8 with 43 points but remain second in the West, according to both clubs. The Dynamo have now failed to score against San Jose in both meetings this season, after a 0-0 draw in Houston on Aug. 29. Houston host FC Cincinnati on Sept. 19, and San Jose take on LAFC at Levi's Stadium the same day.
The Closing Take
The Quakes and Apple TV staged a Ted Lasso Night, handing thousands of fans the show's famous "Believe" posters. Then Gunn went out and produced the most Ted Lasso moment possible: flat on his back, out of options, trusting his gut. Coach Lasso would have bought him biscuits.
