Ousseni Bouda Bags Two, Timo Werner Scores First MLS Goal as Earthquakes Rout LAFC 4-1
Ousseni Bouda scored twice and Timo Werner added his first MLS goal as the San Jose Earthquakes beat LAFC 4-1 at BMO Stadium to improve to 7-0-1.

For 52 minutes on Sunday, this looked like the cagey Western Conference chess match everybody expected. Then the San Jose Earthquakes flipped the board over. Three goals between the 53rd and 58th minutes turned BMO Stadium into a library, and the visitors never let the home crowd find its voice again.
San Jose beat LAFC 4-1, with Ousseni Bouda scoring twice and Timo Werner adding a goal and an assist. Werner's strike was his first in MLS, according to both the AP and MLS, and the win pushed the Quakes to 7-0-1. LAFC, meanwhile, suffered its first home loss of 2026.
A Quiet First Half
The opening 45 minutes were all probing and no punch. Bouda forced Hugo Lloris into a save at the bottom right corner in the 2nd minute, Preston Judd dragged an effort wide from a tight angle in the 10th, and Lloris got down again to stop Judd in the 25th.
LAFC's best looks fell to Son Heung-Min, who had five shots on the night. The 26th-minute effort from distance went straight at San Jose goalkeeper Daniel, and a few minutes earlier Timothy Tillman had been booked after the referee judged that he went down too easily. Not a great look for the hosts in a half that had zero minutes of added time and very little else.
Mayhem After the Break
Son tested Daniel again early in the second half, and LAFC said the San Jose keeper had to leap to keep out his effort from the edge of the area in the 48th minute. Five minutes later, the game broke open.
Werner sprang Bouda on a fast break in the 53rd minute, and Bouda finished from a difficult angle on the right into the bottom right corner. That goal ended Lloris' long run without conceding, a streak LAFC called a club record and the fourth-longest by a single goalkeeper in MLS history.
Three minutes later, Werner got his own. Beau Leroux supplied the pass, and Werner scored from the center of the box. MLS described it as a solo run through the LAFC defense, and Werner sounded like a man who needed it. "I'm very happy to score my first goal," he said postgame.
In the 58th minute, Judd smacked the left post from outside the box, and in that same minute Ryan Porteous put the ball into his own net to make it 3-0. Judd was flying, LAFC was reeling, and the 22,114 fans were mostly staring at their shoes.
LAFC went for a full reset, sending on Jacob Shaffelburg, Jeremy Ebobisse and Ryan Hollingshead all at once in the 60th minute.
One Counter Tilted Everything
The real hinge was that 53rd-minute counter. Two minutes after Porteous headed a set piece wide at the other end, San Jose scored on a fast break, and the whole night tilted. Everything after that was a team playing with house money against a team chasing its own tail.
LAFC got a lifeline in the 74th minute when Reid Roberts turned the ball into his own net, but Bouda shut the door in the 80th. Niko Tsakiris set him up, and Bouda finished from the right side of the box into the bottom right corner for his fourth goal of the season, per the AP.
Bouda and Werner Run the Show
Bouda was the best player on the field: four shots, three on target, two goals. He also had a close-range chance in the 70th minute that slid just wide, which tells you how sharp his movement was all night.
Werner, whom the AP described as sidelined for the past two weeks with a lower-body injury, delivered the assist on the opener and then scored the second. The AP said the assist was his third. "It's twice as fun when you can score a nice goal," Werner said. He also admitted the drought had been on his mind: "I think goalscoring hasn't really been there for me recently."
Head coach Bruce Arena was not shy about his new forward. "You can see that Timo's going to be a special player for us," Arena said.
Leroux's assist was his fourth, matching his total from last season in 33 appearances as a rookie, per the AP, and Tsakiris notched a career-high fifth assist. Daniel finished with three saves. For LAFC, Son led all players with five shots, two on target, and Lloris made two saves.
The Box Score Story
- Shots: LAFC 16, San Jose 12. Shots on target: San Jose 5, LAFC 3.
- Possession: LAFC 52.7 percent, San Jose 47.3 percent.
- Clearances: San Jose 30, LAFC 10.
- Crosses: LAFC attempted 20 and completed 3.
- Saves: Daniel 3, Lloris 2.
Quakes on Top, LAFC Wobbling
San Jose is 7-0-1 with 21 points. The AP said the result moved the Quakes into a first-place tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield races, and that they have won all four of their road matches. MLS called it the best start to a season in San Jose history. The Quakes host Austin FC on Wednesday.
Arena credited the group's growing pains. "A lot of the players who are playing now got beat up last year to get the experience they needed to be where they are today," he said.
LAFC drops to 5-1-2 with 16 points after a second straight loss, and the AP had the club third in the West. LAFC said the defeat was its first at home in all competitions since Aug. 31, 2025, snapping an 11-game home unbeaten streak across all competitions and a seven-game home winning streak in MLS regular-season play. It was also only the third time in club history that LAFC conceded four or more goals in a league match at home. Colorado visits BMO Stadium on Wednesday.
The Indie Hit of the Spring
San Jose is the indie movie that keeps beating the blockbusters at the box office, and Sunday was the weekend it topped the charts outright. LAFC has the stars, the stadium and the pedigree. San Jose has a 7-0-1 record and a striker who just found his first MLS goal. Werner said it best: "It's always important for every player on the pitch, but especially for strikers, to score goals and make assists."
