Beau Leroux's Long-Range Strike Hands Vancouver Whitecaps First Loss as San Jose Earthquakes Win 1-0
Beau Leroux scored from distance in first-half stoppage time and Daniel made six saves as the San Jose Earthquakes beat the previously perfect Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 at BC Place.

For 45 minutes, the Vancouver Whitecaps did everything except score, which had not been a problem for them all season. Then, with the first half's final seconds ticking away, Beau Leroux found a pocket of space at the top of the box and changed the shape of the night.
Leroux's long-range strike in first-half stoppage time held up, Daniel made six saves, and the San Jose Earthquakes won 1-0 at BC Place on Saturday night in front of 21,261. It was Vancouver's first loss of the season and the first match this season in which the Whitecaps failed to score. The two clubs now sit level at 4-0-1 with 12 points apiece.
Vancouver Knocks, Daniel Answers
The first half played out like a highlight reel of Brian White near-misses. The Vancouver striker fired over in the eighth minute, then had a header from the center of the box saved by Daniel in the 22nd. The pressure really built around the half-hour mark. Daniel saved from Aziel Jackson in the 29th minute and then kept out a White header from the right side of the six-yard box in the 30th. A minute later, White headed over again from a set piece.
San Jose had moments of its own. Preston Judd headed wide in the 19th minute and forced a save from Yohei Takaoka in the 26th, and Jamar Ricketts had a close-range effort blocked in the 33rd. But for most of the half, the visitors were defending, and doing it well.
The Strike
Then came the moment. In first-half stoppage time, Ronaldo Vieira had a shot blocked and San Jose won a corner. According to the Quakes, Vancouver's clearance was shallow, Leroux won the ball off Cheikh Sabaly, and he unleashed a right-footed shot from well outside the box. It flew into the top right corner, and Takaoka could only watch.
It was Leroux's first goal of the season and the sixth of his MLS career, according to the club, which also noted it was the second straight season he had scored with a long-range blast at BC Place against Vancouver. San Jose named him its man of the match.
Leroux explained that he was not even meant to be standing there. "At first, I wasn't supposed to be there," he said. "I ended up in the right spot, got the ball at the top of the box, and struck it well."
Head coach Bruce Arena wasn't surprised. "Oddly enough, that's a typical Beau goal. A lot of his goals look like that," he said.
German Reinforcements, Same Result
Both coaches went to their bench early in the second half. Thomas Müller replaced Sabaly at halftime for Vancouver, and Timo Werner came on for Ricketts in the 54th minute, the San Jose recap noting that both teams' German stars had now entered the match. San Jose also lost DeJuan Jones to an injury, with Vítor Costa replacing him.
Vancouver kept coming. Emmanuel Sabbi forced a save in the 51st minute, White was denied again in the 68th, and Édier Ocampo's shot from outside the box was saved in the 71st. In the second minute of stoppage time, substitute Kenji Cabrera curled a shot from outside the box that slid just wide to the right. That was Vancouver's last real look.
The turning point is obvious: Leroux's goal arrived at the worst possible moment for the home side. Vancouver had dominated the half and had nothing to show for it, and then had to spend another 45 minutes chasing against a team that was very happy to defend.
The Standouts
Daniel was the reason San Jose left with three points. Six saves, including three on White and one on Jackson, and the club said it was his fourth clean sheet of the season and the 13th of his MLS career. San Jose said that put him second in the league this season, behind only LAFC's Hugo Lloris.
White was Vancouver's best attacker and its most frustrated man. Five shots, three on target, nothing to show for it.
In midfield, San Jose noted that Niko Tsakiris had one key pass to push his league-leading total to 16. Arena singled him out too, saying he "put in another strong 90-minute performance tonight."
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Vancouver 61.4 percent, San Jose 38.6 percent.
- Shots: Vancouver 12, San Jose 6. On target, Vancouver led 6 to 3.
- Saves: Daniel 6, Takaoka 1.
- Clearances: San Jose 37, Vancouver 14.
- Interceptions: San Jose 9, Vancouver 1.
What It Means
San Jose's numbers are starting to look historic. The club said it was only the third time it had opened a season with four wins and one loss through five matches, and that one goal conceded in five games set a new club record for the fewest allowed over a five-game stretch in MLS play. The previous mark was two, set in 2015. San Jose also said the result moved it level on points with Vancouver for second in the Western Conference.
It was also a milestone night for the man on the bench. According to the Quakes, Arena won his 277th regular-season game, an MLS record.
Arena was pleased but measured. "We played here last year and were embarrassed, so this shows how much progress we've made as a team," he said. He also offered some context for the result: "Vancouver is a very good team, and they're coming off a tough, congested schedule."
Leroux kept perspective too. "We've got four wins in five games, and considering we had nine wins all of last year, it's a step in the right direction," he said.
Vancouver, meanwhile, had won its first four matches by a combined 14-1. One loss is not a crisis, and the Whitecaps host Portland on April 4 with a chance to restart the run. San Jose, which bounced back from its only loss of the season against Seattle, hosts San Diego the same day.
Closing Take
Vancouver spent a month looking like the league's final boss. San Jose found the cheat code: soak up the pressure, trust your goalkeeper, and let a midfielder who loves shooting from distance do what he does. As Arena said, "Our focus is on continuing to improve and pushing to qualify for the playoffs." On this evidence, the Quakes are aiming a little low.
