Earthquakes, Whitecaps Draw 1-1 as Sebastian Berhalter Cancels Out Preston Judd
Preston Judd struck early and Sebastian Berhalter answered in the 76th minute as the San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps drew 1-1 at PayPal Park.

This was billed as the heavyweight bout of the MLS spring, and for 76 minutes it looked like San Jose's early jab might be enough. Then Sebastian Berhalter found a loose ball in the box and flicked it home with the outside of his right foot.
The San Jose Earthquakes and the Vancouver Whitecaps drew 1-1 on Saturday night at PayPal Park, where 18,000 fans watched the top two teams in the league trade blows for nearly 100 minutes. Preston Judd scored in the fourth minute for San Jose, and Berhalter's 76th-minute equalizer kept Vancouver three points back. San Jose said the matchup carried the most combined points per game between two clubs after at least 10 games in a season, at 2.52.
A Fourth-Minute Haymaker
The Quakes did not waste time. Ronaldo Vieira pushed the ball forward in transition, Paul Marie delivered a low ball from the right, and Judd arrived in the middle of the box to finish with his right foot into the bottom right corner. Four minutes in, 1-0.
From there the game tilted hard toward the visitors. Vancouver finished with 71.3 percent possession and attempted 567 passes to San Jose's 227, and the Whitecaps spent long stretches circling the Earthquakes' box like a shark that had smelled something. The best first-half look came in the 28th minute, when Cheikh Sabaly headed a ball down for Jeevan Badwal from very close range and Daniel kept it out. Brian White headed a corner wide in the 35th.
San Jose's answer was to dig in and occasionally kick. Vieira, Benji Kikanovic and Daniel were all booked before halftime, and the Quakes finished the night with four yellow cards to Vancouver's one.
Vancouver Turns Up the Volume
Jesper Sørensen sent on Emmanuel Sabbi at halftime, and the second half became a siege. In the 54th minute alone, White had a header blocked, Andrés Cubas forced a save from Daniel and Berhalter fired over. In the 57th, Daniel denied Badwal again from the middle of the box. Bruno Caicedo just missed to the right in the 65th.
San Jose still had its moments. Judd forced Yohei Takaoka into a save at the top of the goal in the 52nd minute, a reminder that the hosts only needed one more swing to put this away.
They never landed it. In the 76th minute, Sabbi's shot from the center of the box was blocked, and Berhalter ran onto the loose ball. MLSsoccer.com called the finish a skillful trivela from close range, and it went into the bottom right corner for 1-1. The Whitecaps nearly stole it in the 80th, but Daniel saved Sabbi's shot from distance in the top right corner. Takaoka matched him at the other end, saving a Vieira effort headed for the bottom left corner in the 90th minute, and seven minutes of stoppage time came and went without another goal.
The Men Who Mattered
Sebastian Berhalter scored the equalizer, picked up a yellow card and was all over the field. The Whitecaps said he now has five goals and seven assists across all competitions this season. MLSsoccer.com framed the night as part of his push for a place on the U.S. squad for this summer's World Cup, noting the national team will unveil its roster on May 26. "He has a great belief, and he's also very optimistic in his play," Sørensen said, per the league's website.
Preston Judd scored for the fourth straight game, per the AP. San Jose said it was his team-leading eighth goal of the season, which the club called a new career-high total, and his fifth goal in his last four matches.
Daniel made four saves despite the early booking and kept the hosts in it during the second-half storm. "Daniel did well tonight. He's been consistent this year," head coach Bruce Arena told the club. Andrés Cubas was Vancouver's man of the match in the Whitecaps' own report.
Second Balls, Second Chances
The match turned when San Jose stopped getting the ball out. The Quakes completed 149 of their 227 passes and made 35 clearances, and eventually one second ball fell to the wrong man. Berhalter had already been flagged as a threat with a shot over the bar in the 54th and a free kick high and wide in the 63rd. The third look was the one that counted.
Arena gave Vancouver its due. "We lacked some quality tonight," he said. Defender Daniel Munie saw a more balanced picture: "We were under a lot of pressure, but we still created chances and still could've won the game."
Stats That Mattered
- Possession: Vancouver 71.3 percent, San Jose 28.7 percent.
- Shots: Vancouver 16 (5 on target), San Jose 7 (3 on target).
- Saves: Daniel 4, Takaoka 2.
- Crosses: Vancouver attempted 31 and completed 6.
- Set pieces: San Jose said Vancouver went 0 for 17 on set pieces.
Still Top of the Pile
San Jose moves to 9-2-1 with 29 points and, per the club, stays in sole possession of first place in both the Western Conference and the Supporters' Shield race. The Earthquakes said their record is the best start in the club's 52-year history, and they have now gone eight league games without a loss after a six-game winning streak ended in a 1-1 draw at Toronto FC last weekend. They also remain unbeaten in their tie-dyed Grateful Dead secondary kits, with seven wins and two draws, according to the club.
Vancouver moves to 8-2-1 with 26 points and sits second in both tables, per San Jose, with a game in hand. The Whitecaps have gone six league matches without a loss since their only defeat, a 1-0 home loss to these same Earthquakes on March 21, and they remain unbeaten on the road. "Points are always important, but it's also important how we play," Sørensen said. Next up is a trip to FC Dallas on Wednesday, then Houston on Saturday.
San Jose visits the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday. Arena, for one, is not planning any celebrations yet. "We're not ready to pack it up and go home for the year," he said.
The Closer
For a match between the two best teams in the league, this felt like the pilot episode of a prestige drama: tense, a little messy, and clearly setting up something bigger. San Jose still wears the crown. Vancouver has the game in hand and the better of the second half. With both teams playing at this level, the sequel cannot come soon enough.
