Guilherme's Long-Range Strike Earns Houston Dynamo 1-1 Draw at LA Galaxy Before World Cup Break

For most of the first half on Saturday night, the LA Galaxy had Houston pinned back, and they even had the lead to show for it. Then, in the 41st minute, Guilherme took one touch, looked up from outside the box and ripped a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner, and suddenly all that pressure was worth exactly one point.

The Houston Dynamo's Brazilian attacker canceled out Joseph Paintsil's VAR-assisted opener, and the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Dignity Health Sports Park in the final match for both clubs before the World Cup break. LA outshot Houston 18-10 and won nine corners to two, but Jonathan Bond made five saves and the Dynamo left Carson with a result their own club called important.

Galaxy Pressure, Bond's Gloves

The early minutes belonged to the Galaxy, and Bond was busy from the jump. He got low to parry an awkward, bouncing drive from Erik Thommy in the 14th minute, then denied Paintsil in the 17th. A minute later Elijah Wynder hit the right post from the six-yard box off a Marco Reus corner delivery, and Gabriel Pec had three shots blocked between the 22nd and 27th minutes.

Houston had their own scare-the-hosts moment in between. In the 16th minute, Guilherme lofted a pass over the top for Mateusz Bogusz, whose header went over JT Marcinkowski before Justin Haak cleared it off the line, according to the Dynamo's account.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute. Edwin Cerrillo chipped a ball over the Houston line for Miki Yamane on the right, Yamane's ball across the six-yard box took a deflection, and Paintsil slammed it in from very close range. The assistant's flag went up for offside, per the Dynamo, but VAR reviewed it and the goal stood. The Galaxy said it was Paintsil's third goal of the regular season.

Guilherme's Moment

The Galaxy's own match report described the equalizer as coming against the run of play, which is fair. It was also gorgeous. In the 41st minute, Jack McGlynn slid a low diagonal pass into Guilherme's feet, and the Brazilian needed one touch to set himself before firing from nearly 25 yards, by the Galaxy's estimate, past a diving Marcinkowski. Two shots all night, one goal, one absolute rocket.

McGlynn deserves more than a footnote here. Besides the assist, he forced Marcinkowski into a diving save from outside the box in the 56th minute and set up several of Houston's better second-half chances. Bogusz was Houston's most active shooter with five attempts, two on target, though none found the net.

For LA, Paintsil had the goal and two shots on target before coming off in the 79th minute; ESPN's feed lists the change as because of an injury, with Harbor Tarczynski-Miller replacing him. Reus, who the club noted captained the side for a fifth straight league match, created chance after chance without getting his own reward.

The Turning Point

The 82nd minute is where this game was saved for Houston. Vanney had sent on Lucas Sanabria and Matheus Nascimento together in the 57th minute, and the two substitutes combined for LA's best late look. Sanabria played a through ball down the right for Nascimento, who hit it with his right foot, and Bond went down to push it away with his left hand. The Dynamo called it the save of the night, and it is hard to argue.

LA kept coming. Pec's header from the six-yard box was saved by Bond in the 86th minute, Tarczynski-Miller had a shot blocked moments later, and Reus headed a stoppage-time corner high and wide. Houston, to their credit, had chances of their own in the 70s, with Bogusz and Artur both testing Marcinkowski and Lawrence Ennali dragging a shot just wide. Neither side found the winner.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: LA Galaxy 18, Houston 10, with eight of LA's attempts blocked.
  • Shots on target: LA 6, Houston 5.
  • Saves: Bond 5, Marcinkowski 3.
  • Corners: LA 9, Houston 2.
  • Possession: LA 55.3 percent.

What It Means

The point leaves the Galaxy at 5-5-5 with 20 points, and the club noted their scoring streak now runs to 24 consecutive matches, the longest active run in MLS. Greg Vanney took the long view after the final whistle. "I feel like every game in MLS is difficult and every team can beat anybody on any given day," he said, before laying out the bigger picture: "Aside from that, we are in ninth."

He also gave the most relatable travel stat of the season. "I calculated the other day, we've been right up close to 30,000 miles in the first half of the season, which is insane," Vanney said.

The home record is the sore spot. "To be honest, we want to have more points at home than what we have so far," defender Jakob Glesnes said. Elijah Wynder, who hit the post in the first half, sounded encouraged by the recent trend: "I think the last, what did you say, six games, we've been playing a lot better." LA resume league play on July 17, hosting LAFC at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Houston move to 7-1-6 with 22 points, and this was their first draw of the season, which tells you how binary their year has been. They return on July 22 against D.C. United at Shell Energy Stadium.

Closing Take

This felt like one of those movie sequels where the hero spends two hours throwing everything at the villain, and the villain keeps walking away. LA had the ball, the corners and the woodwork. Houston had Bond and one perfect swing of Guilherme's right boot. In MLS, that is often enough for a road point. Vanney's postgame message was blunt about where the Galaxy are heading next: "So I know the group in there, we're disappointed for tonight but they are excited about what's to come in the next half of the season."
