Mateusz Bogusz Scores First Dynamo Brace as Houston Rout Austin FC 3-0
Mateusz Bogusz scored twice and Guilherme added a goal and an assist inside 32 minutes as Houston Dynamo FC beat Austin FC 3-0 at Shell Energy Stadium.

Houston Dynamo FC did not need a full 90 minutes to settle Saturday night's Texas rivalry. It needed 20. Between the 12th and 32nd minutes, Mateusz Bogusz scored twice and Guilherme added a third, and Austin FC spent the rest of the evening chasing a game that was effectively over before halftime.
Houston beat Austin 3-0 at a sold-out Shell Energy Stadium, according to the Dynamo, and goalkeeper Jonathan Bond made five saves to protect the shutout. It was payback, too. Austin had won the first Texas meeting of the season 2-0 at home in April.
Twenty Minutes of Chaos
Bogusz needed only 12 minutes to get going. Ezequiel Ponce found him in the middle of the box, and the Polish attacker fired a right-footed shot through the center of the goal past Brad Stuver for a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Héctor Herrera sent a cross to Ponce on the right side of the six-yard box, and his header went just wide to the right.
Austin had its moments in response. Przemyslaw Placheta forced Bond into a save in the 23rd minute and had another shot blocked in the 28th, while Facundo Torres had a header blocked in between. Then Houston punished Austin twice in three minutes.
In the 29th minute, Guilherme slipped a through ball to Bogusz, who struck first time with his right foot into the bottom left corner. After a short drinks break, Houston struck again in the 32nd. Agustín Bouzat sprung Guilherme on a fast break, the Brazilian carried it into the left side of the box, and his right-footed finish tucked inside the bottom right corner. Three shots on target, three goals. Clinical does not begin to cover it.
Austin did push before halftime. Bond saved Placheta again in the 36th minute, then denied Brandon Vázquez twice, first on a header in the 43rd minute and then on a shot from outside the box in first-half stoppage time. Stuver, for his part, stopped Ponce in the 39th minute to keep the margin at three.
Austin Pushes, Bond Says No
Austin, by its own account, created more chances after halftime. The finishing never followed. Vázquez headed high and wide in the 48th minute and had a shot blocked in the 50th. Jon Gallagher missed the top right corner by a whisker in the 56th, and Torres and Vázquez both put headers over the bar from Joseph Rosales crosses in the 69th and 75th minutes.
Houston had chances to pile on, with Bogusz shooting wide to the right in the 51st minute, Guilherme heading wide four minutes later and both men firing over before the hour. The rest of the night was about game management. Jack McGlynn and Duncan McGuire came on in the 70th minute, and Ondrej Lingr and Erik Sviatchenko followed late.
Austin kept swinging until the end. Mateja Djordjevic had a header blocked in the 86th minute, Guilherme Biro nodded a corner just wide in stoppage time, and Bond finished the job by saving a Vázquez shot from outside the box in the third minute of stoppage time. Shutout secured.
Who Ran the Show
Mateusz Bogusz scored twice on four shots, and Houston said it was his third career MLS brace and his first as a member of the Dynamo. MLSsoccer.com noted that he and Guilherme both arrived on Designated Player deals this past winter. This is the kind of night that justifies the investment.
Guilherme set up the second goal and scored the third before giving way to Lingr in the 84th minute. Houston said it was the fifth time this season he has scored and assisted in the same match. MLSsoccer.com noted he is headed to the MLS All-Star Game to face the LIGA MX All-Stars, and he looked the part.
Jonathan Bond made five saves, including three on Vázquez, and Houston said it was the club's fifth clean sheet of the season. On a night when the scoreboard looked comfortable, he quietly kept it that way.
Brandon Vázquez was Austin's most dangerous player, putting three of his six shots on target. Bond simply had his number.
Héctor Herrera made his 100th appearance for the Dynamo in all competitions, according to the club, and marked it with the assist-quality cross that Ponce nearly converted early.
The Turning Point
The 32nd-minute goal. At 2-0, Austin still had a pulse and had been creating looks through Placheta and Torres. Three minutes later, Bouzat and Guilherme turned a fast break into a three-goal cushion, and the next hour became a formality. Two goals in three minutes, with a drinks break in between, is a heck of a way to end a contest.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on goal: Austin 5, Houston 4. Houston scored on three of its four.
- Total shots: Austin 15, Houston 10.
- Saves: Bond 5, Stuver 1.
- Possession: Austin 53.9 percent, Houston 46.1 percent.
- Crosses: Austin attempted 27 and completed 7, while Houston made 19 clearances.
What It Means
Houston climbed to 8-2-6 with 26 points, and MLSsoccer.com's matchday roundup had the Dynamo fifth in the Western Conference, one spot outside a home playoff position. Houston has now lost just once in its last seven league matches, and its home record improved to six wins, one draw and two losses. The Dynamo travel to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, Aug. 1.
Austin fell to 4-5-8 with 17 points, a sobering follow-up to its 3-1 midweek win over Seattle. The club will play its 10th away match of the regular season at the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 1, and it will need a lot more than possession to climb out of this hole.
The Closing Take
Austin had more of the ball, more shots and more shots on target, and it still went home on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline. That is the cruelty of a rivalry game: the box score can tell one story while the scoreboard tells another. Houston did not need 90 good minutes. It needed 20 ruthless ones, and Bogusz and Guilherme delivered them like a pair of closers who knew exactly when to show up.
