Houston threw a party for its 2006 MLS Cup champions on Saturday night, and the 2026 team made sure the guests of honor did not have to sit through a buzzkill.

Guilherme buried a 21st-minute penalty, Jonathan Bond kept a fourth straight clean sheet without needing to make a single save, and the Houston Dynamo beat the LA Galaxy 1-0 in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,063 at Shell Energy Stadium. Per the club, it was the first time in Dynamo history the team has strung together four consecutive clean-sheet victories. It was not pretty, and the Dynamo's own bench admitted as much, but in a Houston August the scoreboard is the only thing that does not sweat.

Twenty-One Minutes to Take Control

The Galaxy actually landed the first punch, or at least swung it. Harbor Miller fired high and wide from the middle of the box in the fifth minute, and Kyogo Furuhashi, making his first start for the club, had a shot blocked in the 15th.

Then the match tilted. In the 18th minute, Lawrence Ennali drew a foul from John Nelson in the box and Houston was awarded a penalty. Guilherme stepped up three minutes later and sent his right-footed kick into the bottom left corner past JT Marcinkowski.

LA did not fold. Furuhashi had two more efforts blocked in the 33rd and 37th minutes, Justin Haak headed high and wide off a corner in the 41st, and Jakob Glesnes sent a shot wide in first-half stoppage time. Houston's best looks at a second came from Jack McGlynn, who had one blocked in the 27th and sent another just wide in the 30th. With a drinks break and eight added minutes, the first half dragged on long enough to qualify as a director's cut.

Ten Men, Long Nights

The Galaxy made a halftime change that backfired badly. Emiro Garcés replaced Maya Yoshida at the break, and 13 minutes into his night he was gone. After a VAR check in the 57th minute, Garcés was sent off in the 58th. Houston's account was that he pulled Ennali down on the break just outside the 18-yard box and was judged to have denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. LA had already lost Elijah Wynder to an injury, with Isaiah Parente replacing him in the 54th.

Down a man, LA turned to its new toy. Hirving Lozano entered in the 65th minute for his Galaxy debut, alongside Troy Elgersma, while Houston sent on Ondrej Lingr and Duane Holmes. Guilherme had already fired over from distance in the 64th, Lingr headed wide from a McGlynn set piece in the 73rd, and Guilherme later just missed with a direct free kick deep into stoppage time.

The Galaxy's best chance arrived on a counter in the 86th minute, when Joseph Paintsil got in behind on a fast break and sent his shot over the bar. Agustín Bouzat forced the only save of the match from Marcinkowski in the fourth minute of 10 added, and the night ended with a little chaos: Ibrahim Aliyu, on for only the final minutes, picked up two yellow cards in stoppage time and was sent off, leaving both teams with 10.

The Difference-Makers

Guilherme is the reason Houston is in this position. The penalty was his 12th goal of the season and, per MLSsoccer.com, his fourth goal in as many games, taking him to 12 goals and seven assists in 19 games. The Dynamo said he has scored or assisted on 67.9 percent of the team's goals this season, the highest in MLS so far, and that he is chasing the all-time single-season record of 71.4 percent set by Sebastien Le Toux for the Philadelphia Union in 2010.

Jonathan Bond did not make a save, and that undersells him. He has not been beaten in 372 minutes, per the Dynamo and the AP, and he did it against his former club. MLSsoccer.com noted that Bond had four clean sheets in 89 games with LA from 2021 to 2023. He now has four in a row in Houston.

"We've got good momentum," Bond said, per MLSsoccer.com. "It's just now we have to keep it going and stay humble."

Lawrence Ennali drew the penalty and the red card, which is about as productive as a night gets for a player without a shot.

For LA, Lozano made the most noise off the bench, including a booking in stoppage time. Galaxy coach Greg Vanney liked what he saw. "He was great. I think he came in with a competitiveness," Vanney said.

Thirteen Minutes That Sealed It

The red card was the turning point. The Galaxy had spent the first half pushing for an equalizer, and with 11 players they had a puncher's chance in the heat. Once Garcés went off, LA had to choose between chasing and surviving, and the Dynamo were happy to keep the ball. "Once we go down a man, it becomes much more challenging," Vanney said.

The Numbers That Matter

  • Possession: Houston 61.4 percent, LA 38.6 percent.
  • Shots: 9 apiece. On target: Houston 2, LA 0.
  • Passes: Houston completed 500 of 549, LA 303 of 343.
  • Interceptions: LA 12, Houston 4.
  • Fouls: Houston 15, LA 14.

What It Means

Houston moved to 11-2-6 with 35 points, and MLSsoccer.com said the win pushed the Dynamo to the top of the Western Conference after Saturday's results. The Dynamo are 9-2-2 over their last 13 matches and unbeaten in seven, per the club. They did it with assistant coach Juan Guerra in charge, with head coach Ben Olsen suspended for yellow-card accumulation, according to MLSsoccer.com.

"But when November comes, when we see the table and the points, we will understand the importance of being able to win games like tonight," Guerra said.

Houston visits Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, Aug. 19. The Galaxy fell to 5-7-8 with 22 points and, per the AP, are 0-3-2 in their past five. They host the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday before a Saturday trip to CF Montréal. Glesnes did not dress it up. "What we have been doing so far isn't good enough," he said.

Ugly Wins Count Double in August

This was the soccer version of a summer blockbuster sequel: not the best entry in the franchise, but it still cleaned up at the box office. Guerra said it could have been better, and he was right. The Dynamo still have four straight wins and four straight clean sheets, and the Galaxy are still waiting for their season to start.
