For 74 minutes on Saturday night, Orlando City did a convincing impression of a team about to end its slump. The Lions had the ball, the territory and a shot off the post. Then one Houston break and one midfielder in exactly the right spot flipped the whole evening at Inter&Co Stadium.

Héctor Herrera scored in the 75th minute and the Houston Dynamo beat Orlando City 1-0 in front of 19,243. Per the Dynamo, it was the club's first-ever win at Orlando in MLS play, its first clean sheet of the season and Herrera's first goal of the campaign. That is a lot of firsts for a team that had been flattened 6-2 in Colorado one week earlier.

Orlando Owns the Ball, Not the Scoreboard

Houston actually started brighter. Mateusz Bogusz had a shot blocked in the first minute, and Guilherme and Diadié Samassékou both let fly inside the opening four. Orlando answered in the 10th minute when Tiago crossed for Tyrese Spicer, whose header from the right side of the six-yard box drifted just over.

From there the game turned into a long Orlando possession spell with occasional Houston interruptions. Martín Ojeda and Zakaria Taifi had efforts blocked in the 24th and 25th minutes, and Eduard Atuesta and Felipe Andrade each went into the book for fouls.

The best chances of the half arrived late. In the 40th minute, Samassékou crossed for Andrade, and Maxime Crépeau had to push the defender's header away from the top of his goal. Andrade nodded another look wide a minute later off a corner. Then, in the 44th, Tiago got a right-footed chance from the right side of the six-yard box and smacked the right post. Spicer fired over moments later, and the teams went in scoreless.

Houston changed goalkeepers at the break, sending Jimmy Maurer on for Jonathan Bond. According to the Dynamo, it was Maurer's first MLS appearance since March 2025. He picked a very busy night to come back.

The Turning Point: Herrera Pounces

The second half opened the way the first one ended, with Orlando probing and Houston absorbing. Justin Ellis replaced Spicer in the 58th minute, and the Dynamo sent on Artur and Sam Vines in the 63rd. Houston's recap noted that Artur, the club captain, was completing his comeback from a knee injury suffered in the preseason.

Maurer's first real test came in the 66th minute, when Martín Ojeda tried his luck from a difficult angle and long range on the right. Maurer saved. Two minutes later Ezequiel Ponce got on the end of a Bogusz delivery and headed it just wide of the right post, a warning shot that Orlando did not heed.

In the 75th minute, Houston broke. The ball bounced loose in the box, Herrera arrived in the middle and buried a left-footed shot through the center of the goal. Orlando's interim head coach, Martín Perelman, summed it up without sugarcoating: "We couldn't score, and they found that goal in transition, and that's the game."

Orlando threw everything forward after that. Ellis had two shots blocked in the 77th minute and Braian Ojeda sent a set-piece chance over the bar in the same sequence. Maurer then dove to deny Ellis in the 81st, after Martín Ojeda had played him in with a through ball, and stopped Iago Teodoro's drive from outside the box in the 86th. Tiago headed wide in the 85th and Teodoro nodded over in stoppage time, while at the other end Crépeau had to save twice from Bogusz and once from Guilherme to keep the margin at one.

Star Watch

Herrera only needed one shot. He teed up two Guilherme shots in the first hour, then showed up in the box at the exact moment it mattered before giving way to Agustín Bouzat in the 80th minute.

Maurer deserves a large share of the credit. Houston's three saves all came after halftime, and they all came from him, along with a 78th-minute yellow card for good measure. For a goalkeeper who had not played an MLS minute in more than a year, that is a heck of a return. Rookie defender Agustín Resch also made his first career MLS start, per the club, and was part of a defense that made 31 clearances.

Bogusz was Houston's most active shooter with five attempts, two on target. Guilherme had four shots and drew six fouls, a constant irritant for Orlando's midfield. For the Lions, Teodoro had three shots from center back and Martín Ojeda had three of his own, while Braian Ojeda committed five fouls and picked up a stoppage-time booking.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Orlando 60.1 percent, Houston 39.9 percent.
  • Shots: Houston 18, Orlando 17. On target: Houston 5, Orlando 3.
  • Saves: Crépeau 4, Maurer 3.
  • Clearances: Houston 31, Orlando 13.
  • Fouls: Orlando 16, Houston 9.

What It Means

Houston improves to 3-0-4 with 9 points and snaps a three-match league losing streak that included losses at FC Dallas, at home to Seattle and in that Colorado rout. The Dynamo return home to host San Diego FC on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Orlando falls to 1-1-6 with 4 points and is now winless in four league matches. The frustration was obvious afterward. "Super frustrating," defender Robin Jansson said. He pointed straight at the woodwork: "I think if we convert one of the chances we had, like the one that hit the post, for example, this would have been a completely different game."

Braian Ojeda went even further. "In truth, I think we deserved to win the game tonight," he said, while also conceding that "tonight the finishing wasn't there." Perelman insisted the team is competing and added, "I have no doubt that goals are going to come again, for sure." The Lions get a quick chance to prove it when Charlotte FC visits on Wednesday.

Closing Take

Orlando played like the better team for long stretches, and the table does not care even a little bit. Houston, meanwhile, found the perfect recipe for a road win in April: a goalkeeper off the bench, a midfielder with impeccable timing and exactly one clean look. Not pretty, not dominant, but three points spend the same no matter how they were earned.
