Mateusz Bogusz Strikes Late as Dynamo Beat Real Salt Lake 2-1, Extending RSL's MLS Winless Run to 10
Guilherme scored and set up Mateusz Bogusz's 87th-minute winner as the Houston Dynamo beat Real Salt Lake 2-1, extending RSL's MLS winless run to 10 matches.

Real Salt Lake did almost everything required to steal a point in Houston. It survived a first half without a shot on target, dragged itself level with two substitutes, and then gave Mateusz Bogusz one swing too many.
Bogusz curled in an 87th-minute winner, Guilherme scored the opener and set up the decider, and the Houston Dynamo beat Real Salt Lake 2-1 on Wednesday night at Shell Energy Stadium. Saba Lobjanidze's equalizer off the bench was RSL's only reward, and the loss stretched the club's MLS winless run to 10 matches.
Houston Knocks, Cabral Answers
Houston spent the first 45 minutes probing and Rafael Cabral spent it saying no. Guilherme tested the RSL captain inside the first minute with a shot from outside the box that Cabral saved near the top of the goal. Bogusz forced a save from the middle of the box in the 35th and another from outside the area in the 44th. Agustín Bouzat and Lawrence Ennali both pulled efforts wide before the break.
RSL, missing 13 players according to the club, could barely get out. Juan Manuel Sanabria had a shot blocked and Jason Shokalook headed high and wide off a corner, and that was the visitors' first-half attacking output. It got worse just before halftime when defender Lukas Engel went down injured, and Philip Quinton replaced him at the break.
Diego Luna gave RSL its first shot on target in the 50th minute, a free kick that Jonathan Bond handled in the middle of the goal. Seven minutes later, Houston broke through. Ennali worked his way to the byline and pulled the ball back for Guilherme, who steadied himself and bent a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner.
RSL's Bench Strikes Back, Bogusz Strikes Last
Head coach Pablo Mastroeni went all in at the 70th minute, sending on Lobjanidze, Lineker Rodrigues and Alexandros Katranis for Luna, Shokalook and DeAndre Yedlin. Six minutes later the gamble paid off. Lineker won the ball and released Lobjanidze on a counter, and the newcomer finished calmly from the center of the box, chipping Bond for his second goal in as many games. Houston's recap says it was the first goal the Dynamo had conceded in more than 200 minutes.
RSL nearly took the lead three minutes later, but Bond stopped Lineker's close-range shot. Then Houston pushed again. Matthew Arana and Duncan McGuire came on in the 80th minute, and Bogusz had two looks in the 84th, a shot that Cabral saved and a follow-up that flew over the bar. Guilherme had another blocked in the 85th.
The third time was the charm. In the 87th minute, Guilherme sent a diagonal ball out to Bogusz on the right side of the box, and the Polish forward lashed a left-footed shot into the top left corner. RSL threw on 19-year-old academy product Owen Anderson for his MLS debut in stoppage time, but Houston closed it out without much drama.
Guilherme and Bogusz Run the Show
Guilherme was the best player on the field. A goal, an assist, three shots, two on target, and he drew five fouls as RSL tried to slow him down any way it could. Houston says he has now been involved in 21 of the club's 32 league goals, and the opener was his 13th goal of the season. That is not a supporting role. That is the whole plot.
Bogusz put four of his five shots on target, beat Cabral once, and kept coming after being denied in the 35th, 44th and 84th minutes. Cabral finished with four saves and deserved better.
For RSL, the bright spots were all from the bench. Lobjanidze has goals in consecutive matches after his first for the club against LAFC on Saturday, per RSL, and Lineker's pass earned him his first MLS assist. Colin Guske and Shokalook made their first RSL starts.
The Turning Point
The 80th-minute substitutions. Houston had just conceded and RSL had momentum, plus a near-miss from Lineker. Houston answered with Arana and McGuire for Héctor Herrera and Ibrahim Aliyu, and within five minutes Arana was setting up Guilherme and Houston's pressure had returned. The winner came from a long diagonal switch, the kind of ball that finds space when tired legs stop tracking runners.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on target: Houston 6, Real Salt Lake 4.
- Saves: Cabral made 4, Bond made 2.
- Fouls: Real Salt Lake committed 18, Houston 7.
- Crosses: Real Salt Lake tried 15 and completed 4; Houston completed none of 6.
- Interceptions: Houston 14, Real Salt Lake 11.
Second in the West, Stuck in the Mud
Houston moved to 13-4-7 with 43 points, and the club says the result kept the Dynamo second in the Western Conference. Houston also says it has avoided defeat in nine of 10 matches since the World Cup break, and the sheets back the shape of it: five straight wins in late July and August, a loss at St. Louis, back-to-back scoreless draws with San Jose and at Charlotte, and now this. RSL had beaten Houston 3-0 in Utah in May, so the season series is even for now. Houston visits San Jose on Saturday.
Real Salt Lake fell to 8-5-10 with 29 points, and the club's recap had RSL 10th in the West. The numbers in RSL's own notes are grim: 10 straight MLS matches without a win, tied for the fourth-longest drought in club history and the longest since 2007, plus 11 straight road games without a win across all competitions. The last league win came against Colorado on May 16. NYCFC visits on Saturday.
A Familiar Late Ache
RSL's headline said it conceded "again late," and the sheets confirm the pattern inside this skid: late winners for Dallas in the 90th minute, Orlando in the 81st and now Houston in the 87th. Injuries explain plenty of it. They do not explain all of it. Houston, meanwhile, looks like a team that expects the 87th minute to belong to it, and lately, it usually does.
