Inter Miami's new stadium has Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and crowds like Saturday's 26,609. What it does not have yet is a home win, and on Saturday night Matt Turner made sure the wait goes on.

Inter Miami CF and the New England Revolution drew 1-1 at Nu Stadium, with Carles Gil scoring in the 56th minute and Germán Berterame equalizing in the 75th. Turner made nine saves, Miami's unbeaten run in the regular season stretched to nine, and the Herons are now three draws deep in a building that has not yet seen them win.

Turner Opens the Show

Miami came out swinging and Turner spent the first half swatting. In the 8th minute he stopped Suárez's effort from the left side of the box and then denied Berterame from the middle. In the 11th, Messi tried his luck from outside the box and Turner parried it at the top right corner.

The Revolution had their moments on the counter. Gil dragged a shot wide in the 15th minute, Dor Turgeman forced Dayne St. Clair into a save from a tight angle in the 20th, and Griffin Yow flashed one just past the top right corner in the 32nd.

Messi's best chance came in the 38th minute, when Suárez slipped him through and he pulled his shot wide from the middle of the box. The AP described him looking skyward and smiling in disbelief afterward, which is the most relatable thing an all-time great has ever done. Turner then saved another Messi strike in first-half stoppage time, and it was 0-0 at the break.

Gil Strikes First

New England lost right back Ilay Feingold to injury before the second half, with Luca Langoni replacing him, and somehow got more dangerous. The Revs piled up four attempts in the 48th minute alone, two of them from Langoni.

Miami thought they had the opener a few minutes later. According to the AP, Tadeo Allende's blast was waved off for offside, and ESPN's data shows Allende flagged in the 52nd minute.

Four minutes after that, Gil made them pay. St. Clair first saved a Turgeman shot toward the top right corner, and later in the same minute Gil hit a left-footed shot from the middle of the box into the bottom right corner. ESPN credited Turgeman with the assist. The Revolution's capsule listed the goal as unassisted, with the move starting from a Will Sands throw-in. It was Gil's second goal of the season, per the club.

Berterame Pounces

Miami's response was relentless. Allende sent a header over in the 70th minute and had another blocked in the 74th, and Ian Fray, also off the bench, headed just past the top right corner moments later. Preston Plambeck, an academy product making his first-team and MLS debut per the club, forced Turner into a save from outside the box in the 73rd.

The breakthrough finally came in the 75th. Rodrigo De Paul threaded a ball through to Suárez, Turner saved his shot from the middle of the box, and per the AP the ball came off Turner's hand straight to Berterame, who scored from very close range.

Both sides had chances to win it. In stoppage time Turner saved from Messi and then from an Allende header, and at the other end St. Clair kept out Brooklyn Raines four minutes into added time.

Who Delivered

Matt Turner made nine saves. The Revolution's match notes called it a season high that matched his MLS career high, and Marko Mitrović was glowing about his goalkeeper. "Matt is an amazing professional, and I think that all those efforts pay back, and he's catching rhythm," the Revs coach said.

Carles Gil scored and took a season-high four shots, per the club. The club also said he has now reached the scoresheet in three straight matches and has five goals and seven assists in 10 career games against Inter Miami.

Dor Turgeman led New England with five shots, three of them on target. The club said both were MLS single-game highs for him.

Lionel Messi took six shots, put three on target and could not find a way past Turner. The Revolution credited Alhassan Yusuf, who made his 50th MLS appearance, with repeatedly frustrating him.

Germán Berterame scored his third goal in four games, per MLSsoccer.com, and was blunt. "Obviously, we're very bitter because I feel that we deserved to win at home," he told Apple TV in Spanish.

The Turning Point

The 75th minute. Turner had been unbeatable for 74 minutes, and he did his job again on Suárez's shot. The ball simply came off his hand to the wrong man. An inch either way and the Revolution fly home with a fifth straight win. Instead, the equalizer pushed New England into survival mode, and they cleared 31 balls to hang on for a point.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Miami held 67.7 percent and completed 644 passes to New England's 294.
  • Shots on target: Miami put 10 on goal from 18 attempts. New England managed 7 from 16.
  • Saves: Turner made nine, St. Clair six.
  • Clearances: New England made 31 clearances to Miami's 4.
  • Corners: Miami won seven corners to New England's one.

What It Means

Inter Miami move to 5-4-1 with 19 points. The point extends their unbeaten run in the regular season to nine, per the club, but MLSsoccer.com noted it also snapped a two-game winning streak and left Miami with three straight draws at Nu Stadium. The AP pointed out that the defending MLS Cup champions have five matches left before the league's seven-week World Cup stoppage. Orlando City visit Nu Stadium next Saturday.

The Revolution move to 5-1-3 with 16 points. Their four-game winning streak is over, but they are unbeaten in five and, per the club, sit fourth in the East. The draw also ended New England's four-match losing streak against Miami, according to the club's match notes. Mitrović pointed to the schedule. "This is our fifth game in a row, and playing every four days, with the travel, I'm very pleased with the effort from the players," he said. New England host Orlando City in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, then Charlotte FC at Gillette Stadium on May 2.

Closing Take

Somewhere, a Miami fan is checking whether Nu Stadium shipped with a hex on home wins. The Herons will get one eventually. On this night, though, the Revolution brought a goalkeeper who treated Messi, Suárez and Berterame like a bouncer treats a fake ID. Yusuf summed it up for the visitors: "I think it's a really important point we earned here."
