Kevin Kelsy Brace Powers Timbers to Record 6-0 Rout of Sporting Kansas City
Kevin Kelsy scored twice and added two assists as the Portland Timbers beat Sporting Kansas City 6-0 on May 9 at Providence Park, the largest margin of victory in club history.

PORTLAND, Ore. — It took the Portland Timbers six minutes to score and 26 minutes to turn Saturday night into history. Kevin Kelsy scored twice and set up two more, Kristoffer Velde opened the scoring with a long-range rocket and the Timbers routed Sporting Kansas City 6-0 at Providence Park on May 9, the largest margin of victory in club history.
The scoreline came on the heels of a 2-0 loss to Real Salt Lake that head coach Phil Neville had called unacceptable. "A large part of the responsibility is mine, but the performance was unacceptable," Neville said of that defeat, according to beIN Sports. The response was emphatic. Portland scored on all six of its shots on target in front of 22,384 fans, and James Pantemis made three saves for the club's first clean sheet of 2026.
Four Goals in 26 Minutes

Velde set the tone in the sixth minute, firing a shot from more than 25 yards into the top corner for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Nine minutes later, David Da Costa flicked a backheel into Kelsy's path, and Kelsy fired a low left-footed shot inside the near post to make it 2-0.
The third came off a set piece. In the 22nd minute, Portland recycled a corner kick and Cole Bassett finished from six yards out, with Kelsy and Velde credited with the assists. It was Bassett's first goal in a Timbers uniform. Four minutes after that, Brandon Bye sent in a cross that took a chaotic route into the Sporting net. Sporting's own recap said Ethan Bartlow's attempted clearance deflected off Wyatt Meyer and Jake Davis before crossing the line, and the goal went down as an own goal by Davis.
Four goals in the first 26 minutes was the fastest the Timbers have reached four in their MLS history and the fourth-fastest by any team in league history, according to the club. Sporting's recap noted it was the first time in club history Kansas City had trailed 4-0 at halftime of an MLS match.
Lassiter and Kelsy Finish the Job

Sporting showed a little more life after the break. Pantemis saved a first-time volley from captain Dejan Joveljic in the 46th minute and stopped Capita Capemba in the 58th. Portland's coaching staff made a wave of changes at the hour mark, bringing on Ian Smith, Joao Ortiz, Alexander Aravena and Ariel Lassiter in the 61st minute, and the substitutes delivered.
Lassiter, the son of former Kansas City forward Roy Lassiter, drilled a left-footed free kick from about 25 yards in the 71st minute for his second goal of the season and the Timbers' first free-kick goal of 2026. Three minutes later he turned provider. Lassiter and Aravena combined to set up Kelsy, who finished first time at the back post for his brace and a 6-0 lead.
Pantemis protected the shutout late, denying substitute Calvin Harris in the 89th minute. Every Portland goalscorer finished with at least one assist, and six different Timbers recorded assists. Kelsy had a match-high four goal contributions and five shots, and his two goals tied him with Velde for the team lead at four. Da Costa added two assists, and Aravena's assist was his first goal contribution for Portland.
What Neville Saw

Neville framed the night as a collective one. "Tonight, I saw a team that dropped their ego and played as a team," he said after the match, according to KOIN. "I'm super proud of the performance. Everyone left their ego at the door."
He also acknowledged the weight that comes with expectations in Portland. "I think the extra expectations and pressure has been a great challenge," Neville said, per KOIN.
Records and the Road Ahead
The result rewrote a few lines in the Timbers record book. Beyond the largest margin of victory in club history, it was Portland's first six-goal game since a 7-2 win over Sporting Kansas City on May 14, 2022, according to the club. The Timbers held 60 percent of the ball and outshot Sporting 16-10, and Kansas City was booked five times, according to Sporting's recap. Portland's lone caution went to Jose Caicedo in the 33rd minute.
The win lifted Portland to 4-6-1 with 13 points and improved its home record to 3-1-1. Sporting fell to 1-8-2 with five points, last in the Western Conference, and extended its winless run to eight games across all competitions. Kansas City has now lost all seven of its trips to Providence Park.
The Timbers had little time to enjoy it. Portland was scheduled to visit CF Montréal at Stade Saputo on Wednesday, May 13, at 4:30 p.m. PT, while Sporting returned home to host the LA Galaxy the same night. For one evening in May, though, the Timbers looked like the team Neville has been asking for: loose, ruthless and, as he put it, without ego.
