Most teams spend the first quarter of an hour feeling out the opponent. The LA Galaxy spent it building a lead that Charlotte FC never had a prayer of touching. Lucas Sanabria in the 8th minute. João Klauss in the 11th. Klauss again in the 13th.

The Galaxy beat Charlotte 3-0 on Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park, and the history came with it. According to the club, the three goals arrived inside the first 12 minutes and 14 seconds, the fastest three-goal start in LA Galaxy history and the sixth fastest time to three goals in a match in MLS history. The old club mark was 16 minutes, set against LAFC on Aug. 25, 2019.

The rest of the night was a formality with a very busy goalkeeper. LA put 12 of its 14 shots on target, and Kristijan Kahlina made nine saves to keep the final from getting truly ugly. At the other end, Novak Micovic needed exactly one.

Five Minutes, Three Goals

The opener was pure persistence. Gabriel Pec cut a left-footed shot in from the right side of the box, Kahlina kept it out, and Sanabria was there to bury the rebound from point-blank range in the 8th minute.

Three minutes later it was 2-0, and this one was a highlight-reel counter. Pec broke down the right on a fast break and slid a low ball across the box for Klauss, who finished left-footed into the bottom left corner. Brazilian to Brazilian, on what the club billed as Brazilian Heritage Night.

Then came the gift. In the 13th minute Klauss intercepted a Charlotte pass, cut inside and bent a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner. Charlotte will not enjoy rewatching that one.

The Galaxy did not take their foot off the gas. Pec forced Kahlina into another save in the 16th minute, Klauss tested him in the 24th, Joseph Paintsil in the 26th and Miki Yamane in the 38th. Charlotte's best stretch came around the half-hour. Kerwin Vargas made Micovic work from the right side of the box in the 28th minute, Wilfried Zaha dragged a shot wide on a counter a minute later, and Djibril Diani headed wide from a corner in the 36th. Zaha and Idan Toklomati were both booked for bad fouls before the break.

Dean Smith Hits the Reset Button

Charlotte coach Dean Smith did not wait around. He made a triple change at halftime: Morrison Agyemang for Andrew Privett, Brandt Bronico for Diani and Ashley Westwood for Luca de la Torre. Per Charlotte, it was the first-team debut for Agyemang, a 21-year-old defender out of Crown Legacy, and he played the whole second half.

The changes slowed the bleeding without changing the story. Edwin Cerrillo forced Kahlina into a save from distance in the 52nd minute. Pec went close in the 57th, then was denied in the 60th and 64th. Marco Reus, introduced in the 66th, forced another stop from a tight angle in the 75th. Matheus Nascimento, who replaced Klauss, had a goal called back for a narrow offside, according to the Galaxy.

Agyemang and Westwood were booked in the 74th and 80th minutes, giving Charlotte four yellow cards on the night, while Rubén Ramos and Sanabria picked up late cautions for LA. Bronico's blocked shot in second-half stoppage time was Charlotte's only attempt after the break. Four shots all game, one on target. That is not a comeback. That is a forfeit with extra steps.

The Brazilian Connection

João Klauss finished with two goals on three shots, all three on target, before his night ended in the 66th minute. He also scored in the opener against New York City FC, which means three goals in his first two MLS regular-season matches for the Galaxy. Head coach Greg Vanney loves what he brings beyond the finishing.

"He sets the tone," Vanney said. "Obviously, he's big and he's strong and hard to deal with for center-backs."

Gabriel Pec was the engine. Five shots, four on target, the assist on Klauss's first goal and the effort that led to the opener. He was also fouled four times.

Lucas Sanabria opened his 2026 account with the first goal, his third in 23 MLS appearances since joining LA in 2025, per the club.

Kristijan Kahlina deserves real credit in a lopsided loss. Nine saves, including what Charlotte called a brilliant second-half stop, and the 3-0 scoreline would have looked a lot worse without him.

The Turning Point

The 13th minute. At 2-0, Charlotte still had most of a match to find a foothold. Klauss pouncing on that pass and curling it home turned a bad start into a lost night, and the visitors never seriously threatened again. Vanney had asked for exactly this kind of opening.

"The message in the locker room going out was, let's win the first 15 minutes," he said. "They certainly won the first 15 minutes."

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: LA Galaxy 12, Charlotte 1.
  • Saves: Kahlina 9, Micovic 1.
  • Possession: LA Galaxy 63 percent, Charlotte 37 percent.
  • Passing: LA completed 650 of 699 passes; Charlotte completed 351 of 399.
  • Discipline: Charlotte committed 14 fouls and took four yellow cards; LA committed 9 fouls and took two.

What It Means

LA improves to 1-1-0 with 4 points after opening with a 1-1 home draw against New York City FC. The club said the win was its second consecutive shutout across all competitions, and Elijah Wynder made his first start of the campaign in the middle of it. Harbor Miller, 18, also made his first MLS appearance of the 2026 regular season off the bench. The Galaxy's first regular-season road trip is next, at the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, March 7.

Charlotte falls to 0-1-1 with 1 point. The opener at St. Louis CITY SC ended 1-1, and this was a sobering second chapter on the road. The good news, per the club: Charlotte's home opener against Austin FC next Saturday kicks off a run of five straight fixtures at Bank of America Stadium.

Closing Take

This was a speedrun. LA hit the save point by the 13th minute and spent the rest of the night making sure nothing went wrong, which is exactly how Vanney wants his team to think now.

"I think you put teams away by making sure they get nothing, they build no momentum, they have nothing they can believe in as the game progresses," he said. "That's how you bury them ultimately."

Charlotte got buried early, and the Galaxy did not even need a quarter of an hour to dig.
