The LA Galaxy spent 35 minutes of the second half guarding a lead against a Vancouver side that arrived with eight wins in nine matches, and they nearly got away with it. Then, in the 81st minute, a free kick from the left wing found Mathías Laborda at the back post, and the Vancouver Whitecaps had their equalizer.

The match ended 1-1 at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday night. Joseph Paintsil scored for the Galaxy in the 46th minute, and Laborda headed Vancouver level off a Sebastian Berhalter delivery. It was the first draw of the season for a Vancouver side that had only won or lost before this, and it left Galaxy coach Greg Vanney thinking about what might have been.

"We were ahead for most of the game and we were in a position to win it," Vanney said.

Vancouver Swarms, Marcinkowski Stands Tall

Vancouver arrived for its first road game since early March and played like it had packed its home form for the trip. In the 10th minute alone, Édier Ocampo had a shot blocked, Berhalter fired wide from outside the box and Brian White pulled a shot wide from the center. In the 19th, Emmanuel Sabbi forced JT Marcinkowski into a save, and a minute later White's header from point-blank range was stopped too.

Vanney was quick to credit his goalkeeper afterward.

"J.T. had a big one today. It was huge. It kept the game at zeros," he said.

The Galaxy had their moments. Paintsil forced a save from Yohei Takaoka in the 24th minute, Justin Haak headed over in the 36th and Paintsil skipped a shot just wide on a fast break in the 39th. But Vancouver controlled the ball and the volume, and White and Jeevan Badwal both put headers off target before the break. The referee showed yellow cards to Mauricio Cuevas and Andrés Cubas, an early sign of a night that would end with 10 bookings.

The Turning Point: Sanabria's Steal

Vanney replaced Marco Reus with Edwin Cerrillo at halftime, and the Galaxy struck almost immediately. Both clubs said Lucas Sanabria intercepted a pass in Vancouver's end; the Galaxy said it came from the goalkeeper. He fed Paintsil, who finished from the right side of the box for a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.

Vancouver kept coming. Cheikh Sabaly nearly curled in an equalizer in the 52nd, and the pressure ramped up after the 62nd minute, when Aziel Jackson, Kenji Cabrera and Bruno Caicedo came on. The game got spikier too, with Sanabria, Ocampo and Cerrillo all booked between the 65th and 67th minutes. Marcinkowski saved from Jackson in the 69th and Caicedo in the 71st, and White hit the right post in the 72nd.

The equalizer finally came from a dead ball. In the 81st minute, Miki Yamane, on for only two minutes, fouled Caicedo on the left wing. Berhalter's cross found Laborda, who headed in from very close range. Vanney pointed out that the Galaxy had just gone to three center backs, and he called it "a foul we didn't need to commit against a sideline with a player facing backwards."

"That ends up being the difference in three points, and instead, we take one," he said.

Star Watch

Paintsil was the Galaxy's most dangerous player by a distance. He took three shots, put two on target, scored the goal and drew a game-high seven fouls. The Galaxy said he also led the game in top speed and sprints, and that the goal gave him four goal contributions in his last four matches overall.

"What he gives us is he's fast as hell, and he can run behind anybody from anywhere at any moment," Vanney said.

Marcinkowski finished with five saves. Haak, playing in midfield, was candid about the late lapse.

"We just let ourselves down, really, on the set piece," he said.

For Vancouver, Laborda's goal was his third of the season and his seventh goal contribution, according to the Whitecaps, tying his MLS career high from last season. The club said he is now the second-highest scoring defender in its MLS era with 12 goals, behind Kendall Waston's 15. Berhalter's assist took him to seven assists and 11 goal contributions across all competitions this season, per the Whitecaps. White led all players with five shots.

The Galaxy also gave 21-year-old Troy Elgersma his MLS debut in the 90th minute, according to the club, after bringing him in on a short-term agreement from MLS NEXT Pro affiliate Ventura County FC.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: Vancouver 62.3 percent, LA Galaxy 37.7 percent.
  • Shots: Vancouver 19, LA Galaxy 7. On target, Vancouver led six to two.
  • Saves: Marcinkowski five, Takaoka one.
  • Fouls and cards: Vancouver committed 18 fouls to LA's 12, and each team took five yellow cards.
  • Passing: Vancouver completed 443 of 516 passes; LA completed 232 of 315.

What It Means

Vancouver moves to 8-1-1 with 25 points and extends its unbeaten run to five matches, four wins and a draw. The Whitecaps said they still lead MLS with a +20 goal difference and sit three points behind San Jose with a game in hand, and that the equalizer was their MLS-leading 10th set-piece goal. Their next stop is San Jose on Saturday, May 9, in a matchup the club billed as one of the most anticipated of the season.

The Galaxy move to 3-4-4 with 13 points and are unbeaten in two after beating Real Salt Lake last weekend. The club said the goal extended its scoring streak to 20 consecutive matches, the longest active scoring streak in MLS. LA now starts a three-match road trip at Atlanta United on Saturday, May 9.

Haak, who said the team needed more bite, shared a detail from the locker room about Reus.

"He got a little bit mad at us and said we need to be more dirty. We can't always play nice," Haak said.

Closing Take

This was a heavyweight-versus-underdog script, and for 80 minutes the underdog was winning the fight on grit. Vancouver did not look like a team that had lost its edge; it looked like a team that ran into a goalkeeper on a good night and a home side willing to scrap for every ball. LA, meanwhile, learned that against a team this good, one avoidable foul can flip the whole story.

Elijah Wynder had the best chance to win it late, shooting wide from the center of the box on an 86th-minute break. Paintsil's message to him afterward was the right one.

"Keep going no matter what. We rise, we fall," Paintsil said.
